You know, of course, qualification will come down to the Scotland vs. Italy match in November

Ukraine and Georgia are huge games as well. The Ukrainians have already beaten us and Georgia looked pretty handy at Hampden. I still think France and Italy are favourites to go through, but it's in our own hands.

That's the beauty of football. Anything can happen to any team. Love to see Italy and Scotland make it through so we don't have to hear Domenech trash anyone anymore. He's just too arrogant for his own good and I think even the French Federation is aware of it.

Still, first time in 57 years... I want France to go through, my default option would be to support France in the absence of Scotland. Do I think we're going to get through? Heck no, I'm Scottish, optimism about our national team isn't in my nature! :D But I think it's doable, and I'm thinking there's a chance...

Fantastic atmosphere on Wednesday night though. :)

3-1 against the Ukraine at Hampden. I'm almost beginning to believe it's possible that Scotland could actually qualify for Euro 2008. All we have to do is beat the world champions. That's all. No pressure then. This group is killing me. :))

If we finish top of the group, it just means that the humiliation in Austria-Switzerland will be more severe! :))

Not that I'm pessimistic or anything :)

Hi Moonraker 5 and John Drake, you guys should be proud of your country. They've done a bang-up job and are turning heads in Europe. They've alreday gone above and beyond any expectation no matter what happens from here on. They're definitely in the driver's seat for the return match with my fellow countrymen. History is on your side when it comes to playing in Hampden Park. Italy has never won on Scottish soil and Italy also failed to qualify for European Championship after they won the 1982 World Cup even though they still had quality players on that team as well. Italy is also not at its best at the moment and recovery of several key players like Zambrotta and Materazzi will be crucial for Italy. No matter what happens November 17th, all eyes will be focused on your country and deservedly so. It's a dream matchup with the world champions going up against one of the hottest clubs in Europe at the moment. Best of luck and hopes for a sterling match. {[]

Guys, I hope that both Italy and Scotland qualify. {[] Not only do I like both Italy and Scotland, but I don't want France to qualify at all. :))

No wonder we're such big Sean Connery fans. :))

As Italian director Sergio Sollima once said, whenever Italians come across a good thing, they'll always find some way to ruin it. He was talking about how the Spaghetti Western was driven into the ground, but it could just as easily apply to our outlook on life. ;)

I'm not nearly the soccer fan that SpectreIsland is, but in my ideal world I'd love to see Dan's prediction come true: Italy and Scotland qualify and France goes home. Very unlikely, but I'll keep my fingers crossed.

Well England get ambushed by Russia in the second half, the hero and villain of the match being Wayne Rooney who scores a screamer to set us 1-0 up, then fouls on the edge of the penalty box to give Russia a chance to get in the match.

Russia look like plodders in the first half, then come alive for the second half, exploiting England's fabled complacency. Gerrard is AWOL for most of the match, Owen gets nothing of much, confirming that he only plays well alongside a weaker striker.

Aye it wasn't the best - we've still got a chance though - with the Hampden crowd - anything's possible.

And if you watched the news over the past half day or so it's only the England result that really matters, we weren't even mentioned on the sports segment I watched on Breakfast this morning.

Which is why I hope they get absolutely humped at the rubgy this weekend. 'Mon the 'Boks!!

You didn't stick with it very long, then. when I watched it it had an interview with one of the Scottish players; unlike the England coverage.

This is great news. If we keep this ranking, we should be in the 2nd group of seeds for the world cup draw. No more groups of death hopefully.

John, when it comes to World Cup, they're all groups of death. There are no mattress teams any more. You know as well as I do, in football, anything can happen and it usually does especially in such a pressure cooker as the WC.

Well can we have a group of death next time that doesn't feature both of the World Cup Finalists. You're right; there are no easy games any more, but Italy and France. That draw was just harsh.

John, the draw was no more harsh than the teams Scotland drew in the following:

WC 1982 - in the same group with Brazil and USSR
WC 1986 - in the same group with Denmark, West Germany and Uruguay
WC 1990 - with Brazil once again and Sweden
WC 1998 - once again with your pals Brazil, Norway and Morocco
and then in the final phase of Euro 1992 in the same group with Holland and Germany and Euro 1996 with England and Holland.
You guys gravitate to groups of death :))

16th June 1998, Scotland 1 - 1 Norway. That's about the only football statistic I could ever rhyme off, because I was in Strathclyde University union waiting on my degree result - and, part way through the first half, they were posted on the notice board. I got hideously drunk that day (out of joy :D )

Anyway, slightly off topic, but I remember the crackling atmosphere of the Scotland v Brazil match that kicked off the tournament.

(And of the top of my head, didn't we give Brazil a run for their money, getting beat 2-1, only to get absolutely humped by Morocco? As per usual?)

I got hideously drunk that day too. We got thrown out of a pub because a friend of mine set fire to a Norway flag after they equalised and then decided to hit himself over the head with a bottle. I woke up at 3 in the morning, thinking it was 3 in the afternoon and went out to buy some food. Funnily enough the shops weren't open. Great days.

We should have had them. Another heroic failure. It would be nice to have some real success by beating Italy.

This is what I want to happen: I want Scotland to beat Italy, Italy to beat Faroe Islands and France to lose to Ukraine. That way both Italy and Scotland qualify and France doesn't. :D

The moment of truth is almost upon us all with Saturday just around the corner. Best of luck to one and all and hoping for safe and exciting matches all around. This has been one of the more interesting Euro campaigns in quite a while no matter what happens {[]

There is a seriously funny trailer up here for the Scotland Italy game, that I wish I could find on Youtube. It's an opera, but sung in the Scots venacular. I'm probably going to miss the game, as I'm unlikely to get near a TV tomorrow. :(

That is funny. It may actually be a first as opera is concerned :)) I've been reading that your country is all pumped up for the match and I can't believe you're going to miss Scotland's most important game after following this entire tournament :# I was wondering if Sir Sean Connery will be in attendance? Have you read anything about him being there in the Scottish papers?
