References to Bond

MAHOMAHO Posts: 95MI6 Agent
I was watching the Avengers, ep. "Too many christmas trees". As you know, Honour Blackman played Cathy Gale in the early seasons, before she was replaced by Diana Rigg as Emma Peel.

In the above-mentioned episode, Steed and Peel read from Christmas cards sent to Steed. One of them is from Cathy Gale. Steed looks at it in astonisment and says "What can she be doing in Fort Knox?" -- with clear reference to Blackman's participation in Goldfinger.

I'm sure there are references to Bond movies in other films/serials, too. Has this been discussed already? Is there a list of such things?

I don't mean Bond spoofs or parodies.

In the movie Scandal(which is about the real-life Profumo Affair),a doctor serving as a secret supplier of call girls for politicians, jokingly refers to himself as James Bond. This film is set in London in the late 1950s and early 1960s,at the time when Ian Fleming's 007 novels were current best-sellers, and were just begining to be made into movies by Cubby Broccoli and Harry Saltzman's Eon Productions.

Our Man Flint features a brief appearance by Derek Flint's fellow superspy,British secret agent 0008--who is played by an actor whose resemblance to Sean Connery is no accident.

The Liquidator takes the James Bond concept to an extreme. The "real-life" head of British Intelligence decides to create his own special assassin in the mold of 007 after having seen(it's strongly suggested) some of the James Bond movies. After an extensive search,a man is found and trained for this role, but...

In 1967's The Saint and the Fiction Makers,Simon Templar(played by Roger Moore),becomes the bodyguard of an extremely successful writer of spy novels that are very much in the Ian Fleming/007 tradition. In one scene,a "clip" from one of the many popular movies based upon those books, underscores their resemblance to Eon's James Bond film series.

Also in The Saint, in some episode (I read this somewhere) an old woman walks up to Roger Moore and asks if he's James Bond. If only she knew... :D

I'm not quite sure what I was asking for, really. I was just so excited to spot the Gale/Galore reference in the Avengers.

References to James Bond as a fictional character are plenty in movies and TV.

However, the Avengers reference is a bit different. I know it's just an in-joke by the Avengers team, but it could be interpreted as a subtle hint that the Avengers Universe and the Bond Universe are one and the same.

I suspect there are far fewer references like that.

PS, I spotted another fun Bond reference in the Avengers. In the ep. "Small game, big hunter", someone uses a rifle to try to kill Mr Steed. The shooter misses and Mr Steed approaches him and grabs the rifle saying "Mauser, single barrell. You've had your five". The rifle goes off *bang*, upon which Mr Steed quips "My arithmetics is shocking!"

What are you talking about? They have to have the same actors and same location to be a refence.
You're obviously not here for the pleasure and enjoyment of Bond. The general tone and attitude of your posts reeks of contempt and you seem to be itching for a fight.

You've been warned by two other mods, and I believe three times is more then enough for your likes.

I think is hard to find a direct reference to the Bond World, i mean, like Zorin Brand, or a guy who works in Universal Exports.

if you ask me, i can't find any. i was thinking in some references like one in the movie "The Assignment"

but i would like to see more...

Back in the late 80's, there was a retail electronics chain named Highland (I think), a definite precursor to Best Buy, Circuit City, etc. For a while their advertising spokesman was Desmond Llewellyn. To Bond fans the in-joke was great. To those people who did not know Bond, he seemd like a kind grandfather type spokesman. He had the gig for a few months, at least.

In The League of Extraordinary Gentelmen Sean Connery plays Alan Quartermain He is recruited to the League by a man calling himself 'M', a clear reference to Bond.

There was a reference to Bond in tonight's episode of House. The good doctor was interrogating a young woman with a condition that made it impossible for her to make choices; and one of his questions was, "Who's the better James Bond? Sean Connery or Daniel Craig?"

I think someone here asked a similar question relating Bond and Grand Theft Auto where there was some commonality with a line Leiter had made in LALD. It would prolly take some searching though

I enjoyed the little slam Steve Martin gives in The Pink Panther when Clive Owen introduces himself as 008 (or was it 006) and asks "Do you know what that means?". Steve Martin replies "Yes, it means you are still one away from the big time." or something to that effect.

I've been revisiting Remington Steele on DVD and our friend Pierce Brosnan makes a reference to Bond in the episode 'Sign, Steeled, and Delivered'...When the prospect of being involved in a CIA caper alarms our detective, Brosnan states to Stephanie Zimbalist "These are men with knives, guns, hats with sharp edges that they throw at your neck!"

Curious if that was Brosnan's bit of ad-libbing, since it was so widely reported that Goldfinger was one of his favorites.

In the film Johnny English (written by Purvis & Wade) the Agent One character is a clear 007 reference- does anybody know if the producers asked any of the ex-Bonds to play that part? (in a similar way to Lazenby's "JB" in The Return Of The Man From U.N.C.L.E.)

As much as I've tried to expunge xXx from my memory, it starts with a character who's clearly supposed to be Bond--a suave guy in a tuxedo--infiltrating a European rave club. He sticks out like a sore thumb and is quickly killed. Cut to Sam Jackson saying something about not putting white mice into a snake pit--no: they need a secret agent who is as dirty and grungy as the opposition. A not-so-subtle comment on how Bond is "irrelevant" to today's Xtreme-minded audiences. By the way, what's the status of xXx 3?

Arguably in regard to CR and its various bold departures from "tradition," EON has deliberately and successfully appealed to today's Xtreme-minded audiences, starting with 007 himself, is is no longer "my father's James Bond."

In the 'Remington Steele' season 2:2 episode, 'Steele Away with Me part 2,' one character remarks to Steele (Brosnan), that 'It's like a dream. It's like a fantasy. It's like a James Bond movie.'

Anyone ever seen an old Flintstones episode where Fred and Barney are watching a Jay Bondrock movie and are suddenly swept up in an adventure involving a volcano, Dr. Sinister and a femme fatale who refers to the fellas as "stupid good-lookings"?

Just a classic bit of Bondian nonsense which captures the essence of the series (pace, style, action) in a way that most parodies fail to do. Highly recommended.

    "World domination. Same old dream."

One off the top of my head is the beginning of True Lies where Arnold cuts through a layer of ice from underwater, and then peels off his wetsuit to reveal a tux with a white jacket underneath. He then suavely enters and subsequently crashes the private party that he wasn't invited to, and chaos ensues. His escape from the party down the snowy mountain was pretty Bond-like as well, as was some of the gadgetry used later on in the film, IMO.

That one was pretty obvious. :007)

I can think of a good one from The Simpsons as well, and I don't mean the obvious Bond parody from season 8 titled You Only Move Twice.

    In the episode Who Shot Mr. Burns, when Burns develops a way to block out the sun from the people in Springfield, with his plan being to gauge the townfolk on electricity 24/7 from his power plant, he shows his plan to Smithers in a model that pops out of the floor. The model, the way that Smithers scampers away nervously, and Burns' accompanying speech are a clear homage to Goldfinger -{

In FAmily Guy, Stewie Griffin often has the dream to live like a 60s swinger with beautiful girls. The skit featured in an episode and also in the movie Stewie Griffin: The Untold Story. The music in these scenes is 'Home James, Don't Spare The Horses' from Burt Bacharach's Casino Royale.

I just watched this episode the other night, and the music for the episode is blatantly trying to imitate both the Bond sound, including a melody that is very similiar to 'From Russia With Love.' Another little tidbit is that the episode stars Pedro Armanderiz Jr.
