A Fictional 3rd Dalton film in 1991

The following is based on the two unfilmed Fleming short stories from FYEO, The Hildebrand Rarity and Quantum of Solace. The concept of this idea was stitching together as many unused Eon ideas from that time that I could think of. The names and sequence-in-a-skyscraper idea and oriental setting all came from the end of the MGW & Alfonse Ruggerio Bond 17 Treatment (as do the names WEBB, KOHONI, CRISP & YUPLAND) as well as the plot revolving around a stolen piece of technology. The ending was set in a vast automated building. I was trying to go for that and a Die Hard vibe for the PTS. Also casting suggestions and ideas for Bond 16 (ultimately junked for what became LTK). In 1987-88 Broccoli and co. all went to China to set up Bond 16. The story was going to revolve around the Snow Leopard Brotherhood from the previous film and feature Chinese art treasures, the terracotta army, a motorbike chase on the Great Wall and other stuff. This was around the time of The Last Emperor and all things Chinese were in. I think the infrastructure was not suitable for Eon and also those gardamm Carmmies wanted to vet the script. But my rationale is that after Tiananmen Sq, the authorities would want a PR push and what better than a Bond film to deal with East West tensions and advertise the studio facilities of the Chinese. I imagine THR to be made in China with their facilities enabling vital budget savings to be made! I have tried to keep to the old Eon way of casting models for the females and lesser stars for the villains. After the relative BO disappointment of LTK, Dalton was given a rocket about publicity. Here he is "performing" the title song, guest hosting Johnny Carson the week of US release (July 1991) and having a homes and lovelife spread in People Magazine. He is advertising Lark cigarettes, the new Ford and American Express as well as Diet Pepsi (the advert shot on the Nene Valley railway ;) ). Sitting back in his favourite Chiswick pub, Dalton tells his luvvie pals he's sold out so much, it makes him puke all the way to the bank! THR also touches on the events of the world back in 1990-1991 including the fall of Communism, Tiananmen Square, the shift to economic espionage, closer European integration, eco-terrorism and the notion of The End of History coined by Francis Fukuyama. Er, thank you. Don't call us, we'll call you. Next please!

Ostensibly attending a champagne auction in the skyscraper hosted by Hong Kong Chinese billionaire, XAN KOHONI, we find Bond flirting with beautiful insurance expert CONNIE WEBB but is really there to protect a revolutionary piece of nano-technology called THE END OF HISTORY which to be handed to SIS under the guise of KOHONI's trade mission. However, in a daring abseil assault on the building by Chinese terrorists, the chip is stolen. Bonds ends swinging from one end of the skyscraper to the other in a dinner jacket with WEBB in his arms drinking vintage champagne before abseiling down them, catching a base jumping terrorist on the way and apprehending him and rescuing the chip.

MAIN TITLE
A Chinese themed title sequence featuring new footage of Dalton is designed by Maurice Binder (after designing titles for Bertollucci's The Last Emperor, Binder begins work but dies midway through shooting the sequence. His work was completed by pop video and advert director, Daniel Kleinman). Bondian, atmospheric, instrumental theme tune called "T.H.R." (featuring Dalton's line reading "The Hildebrand Rarity" sampled throughout and chants of T. H. R.) is performed by ambient dance act, The Shamen. (The song is later nominated for an Oscar, and during The Shamen's performance at the televised ceremony, Dalton appears live on stage, saying the line. They lose but Dalton is distinguished by being the only Bond actor to "perform" the film's title track!)

BRUSSELS, BELGIUM
French Canadian gas billionaire and industrialist and rabid capitalist ETIENNE HARVEY MILLER (from QOS short story) addresses a Brussels conference of Euro movers and shakers. Suggesting that, with the demise of the Cold War, the Pacific Rim industries threaten European interests, he suggest a trade embargo. At a party in the Atonium to celebrate securing a new NATO contract, Miller and his wife, RHONDIA (changed slightly from Quantum of Solace story)is introduced by the Minister of Defence, Sir Frederick Gray to Bond and Felix Leiter (on secondment to NATO HQ). Bond also meets the Seychellois business advisor to Miller, FIDELLE BARBEY (changed to a female from THR short story). The party is crashed by more Chinese terrorists who attempt to kidnap MILLER. Foiled by Leiter (he is sprayed with machine gunfire in his artifical arm and leg), they kidnap BARBEY. A gun battle ensues in the tubular structure of the Atonium. The terrorists then escape but are foiled and Barbey rescued after a high speed car chase through the streets with Bond employing the full arsenal of his gadget laden Aston Martin Volante.

LONDON, UK
In London, M with his new young advisor, David Yupland, Q and the Minister of Defence go through Bond’s adventures. THE END OF HISTORY is a top secret technology programme developed in HK by KOHONI and the British. TEOH is the doomsday weapon in military electronic counter measures - a super virus that, if properly positioned, wipes out a nation’s computer networks. It seems the Chinese government were involved in the attempted theft. Constantly warned about the imminent Chinese threat by MILLER, the attempt to disrupt the life of the great industrialist is a clear sign of the threat the Chinese pose in the new world order. With the restoration of Hong Kong imminent, Chinese expansion must be held in check.

In gratitude to Bond, MILLER now has invited Bond on a conservation cruise up the Yangtse River to search for the famous fish, The Hilderbrand Rarity and which is then to be bred in captivity. The trip also doubles as a factfinding tour for MILLER in an attempt to downplay diplomatic tensions. Bond is ordered to accompany MILLER to protect him from further attack. Moneypenny wishes Bond well in fluent Mandarin - "Well, you did learn the language at Cambridge!" she adds. "Moneypenny, I didn't know you had such a learned tongue." "Oh James, in all sorts of ways!"

CHINA
The cruise up the Yangste finds Bond with MILLER, his wife RHONDIA and FIDELLE and expert naturalist, PROF DENHOLM CRISP. Bond snoops around and sees that there is an unlikely connection between KOHONI and MILLER, in theory, rivals. BARBEY tells Bond of front companies where both are partners. While on the river, an attack by Chinese pirates on the luxury boat is foiled by Bond. However, evidence of this attack connects the “pirates” with the 2 previous Chinese terror attacks. This is played out in between the search for the rare yet poisonous fish and Rhondia revealing how she met MILLER and lives in a gilded cage but loveless married life (i.e. the Quantum of Solace story recounted like the Fleming Octopussy story in that film). At a certain point, Bond is nearly killed by the poison used to find THR. When found, MILLER reveals it’s scales have rare semi-conducting powers useful for nano-technology and exploited by PROFESSOR CRISP. MILLER and co. have no intention of conserving the fish - they want to dissect it to discover it's properties. That night, after a blood curdling scream, FIDELLE is found dead with the fish shoved down her throat.

Bond confronts MILLER. Who reveals he is in league with KOHONI who has a private army equipped with Chinese weapons. They had attempted to steal The End of History weapon in Beijing so that KOHONI was unconnected to it’s use and also discredit the Chinese. However, they were foiled by Bond. The staged “attacks” were to increase tensions and discredit the Chinese. MILLER and KOHONI are going to attack the Chinese networks, crippling their economy and military strength and ending communism there too: MILLER stops the Pacific Rim threat to western industries, KOHONI weakens China preventing the HK takeover. Bond reasons that to destabilize a billion people with nuclear weapons will cause a power vacuum and will lead to Eastern revolution which will engulf the west. The
End Of History, indeed.

007 is taken prisoner in the area where the terracotta army is but rescued by RHONDIA. After a series of chases including a shoot up in the terracotta army museum and a motorbike chase on the Great Wall of China, Bond and Rhodia are captured but not before alerting the Chinese army. Taken to a gigantic concrete and steel dam (the ultimate destination of the cruise), a power hub for China which also houses the Chinese military industrial mainframe which, upon a countdown initiated, total electronic devestation of China will occur courtesy of The End of History weapon. Bond and Rhondia escape and with the help of the Chinese army defeat MILLER and KOHONI and his private army in a gigantic battle ending in the dam splitting open and flooding.

THE END OF THE HILDEBRAND RARITY

JAMES BOND WILL RETURN

I have to admit it... it first doesn't seem like a Bond film, but the pause of Quantium of Solace, and de main development says otherwise.

A good idea, i mean, to see Dalton back again.. is amazing how you pull out this story with previous info.... but right now, is just history. the only wayis to make Pixar or another animated studio to make this film, and put in Dalton.

I'm not so convinced that in 1991 Kleinman hasn't a curriculum to fill Binder's shoes, and Elizabeth "please marrry me" Hurley would be weird to be cast, but no so hard after all. but there are too many models (just for me)

Dalton singing? not wow, rather why... i can't digg that part. i just can't.

The best part so far, is Laurie as M's assistant, to, why not, make him a future M... (i'm hoping after Dench, but i really think he could play him, not in a Clesse joker.)

Your honest fan TOOTS has to congratulate you again.

I really, really wish they had gone ahead with their plans to do another Dalton film in 1991. It was supposed to be The Property of a Lady.

Me too. I always thought Dalton deserved his third and fourth outings (maybe they should have brought him in earlier and tailored OP and AVTAK to his strengths).
As regards TOOTS' scenario: I quite like it, though it strikes me as writ a little too large for Dalton. The story is very Bondian but it doesn't quite convince me as Dalton's Bond.

Yes I heard that too, although the story had already been used as the auction sequence in Octopussy. I t has a better ring to the title. I heard a rumour that Broccoli and Wilson are reconsidering the title for Bond22. As for TOOTS scenario...good work, i enjoyed the read. I have a scenario for Icebreaker and I may share it soon....

I had a small idea for a new Dalton movie awhile back here it is.

    Title: Nobody lives forever
The film takes some elements from tmwgg novel.

Opens with a brainwashed Bond trying to kill M. He is stopped then deprogrammed and sets out to find those that used him while trying to come to terms with what has happened to him.

Bond: Dalton, Nicole Kidman as the bond girl, Rutger Hauer as the villian

Works for me. I particularly like the down-to-earth plot, which matches Dalton's strengths. Yet after the rogue agent plot of LTK, I feel something a little less "personal" might be required.

I shall post my scenario for THE PROPERTY OF A LADY (1991) soon.

Probably Ian Fleming, a brain-washed 007 attempting to kill M is part of the final novel, The Man with the Golden. ;)

Yeah, but there has been controversy that he actually wrote all of it.

Yeah, but there has been controversy that he actually wrote the last bit.

That possibility has been denied by no less than Kingsley Amis (who gave the manuscript a once over at the publishers request) and John Cork (who also states he's seen the original MS). Amis was the author of three Bond-related books (as well as being a respected author/editor/poet in his own right; his son Martin Amis is a well-respected literary figure) The James Bond Dossier, The Book Of Bond, and Colonel Sun, the last two under the respective pseudonyms of "William Tanner" (ie M's Chief of Staff) and Robert Markham. John Cork belongs to/works for the Ian Fleming Foundation and has written such books as James Bond The Legacy as well as working on the commentaries for the Bond films.

Anyway, the brainwashed Bond attempting to assassinate M is actually the first bit, not the last.

The main reason why TMWTGG is weaker than its predecessors is that Fleming died before he could revise the novel. It's a first draft- his habit was to write the first draft at breakneck speed then revise, amend, edit, etc, thus achieving the famed "Fleming sweep"- but it had to be published since YOLT ended on a cliffhanger. Not to mention that there was a guaranteed market for this novel and its follow-up.

My idea comes from Dalton's take on the role gritty, hard edge making the character seem more human less of a superman. The brainwash idea plays on that as bond is basically mind raped and used for bad. Bond has to struggle with this and regain his confidence.

Excellent idea, using Bond being brainwashed into killing M why nobody thought to do it before in a film is beyond me. As for TOOTS idea most of works for me, I doubt that in the early 1990's the Chinese would allow a Western film crew to shoot there, plus with the Tiananmen square killings fresh in the minds of Western world it mite be seen as disrespectful. Also the whole Bond vs robots stories that I have heard sounds more like it belongs to Roger Moore's James Bond not Timothy Dalton's.

Still I have always felt that if Dalton did a third movie it would have been great, who knows
maybe would have been as popular Connery and Brosnan to the movie going peoples of the world.

With due acknowledgements to TOOTS for inspiring the project (and a nod to the handful of crazy comrades who planned the short-lived August coup), here's my own humble take on alternative history.

    Cast: to be decided

    1987 - The Living Daylights
    1989 - Licence to Kill
    1991 - THE PROPERTY OF A LADY

    PTS: THE SICILIAN COAST:
Dark, early hours, camera zooms on Bond crouching at the foot of a wall, crickets can be heard in the background; Bond receives instructions from what might be a surveillance van through a microphone lodged in his ear. Camera pans out, and the image opens onto a coastal view with a single pier where a luxury yacht is anchored: Bond is to board the Yacht and kill an unspecified member of some criminal organisation. An action sequence ensues in which Bond kills body-guards, sneaks in to the master bedroom, and subdues his man (while a semi-naked woman screams in the corner). Just as he is about to shoot the man in cold blood Bond is checked. Mission objective changes: Bond is told he must bring the man in for questioning. The pistol is knocked out of Bond’s hand; a violent punch-up takes place with a great deal of furniture destroyed. Finally Bond knocks the air out the man’s lungs, and whacks him unconscious. END PTS

TITLE SEQUENCE: Your standard Maurice Binder affair, with silhouettes of naked ladies that morph into barren trees and hourglasses

AT SEA (MEDITERRANEAN) AND LONDON (UNIVERSAL EXPORTS):
The film opens with a wide-angle shot of the boat at sea. Without a proper getaway plan Bond decides to smuggle his charge out of Sicily by sailing to a near airstrip situated on a small Island off the Italian coast. Bond is on the phone with a contact arranging for a private plane. In mid-conversation he is interrupted by the sound of an approaching speedboat. Rifle shots are heard and a hand-grenade explodes, a boat-chase ensues at the end of which Bond’s yacht is half-destroyed, his charge is killed and the intruder escapes.

Bond returns to headquarters and finds M in an unforgiving mood. Furious, M explains that the dead guy was an Italian financier with ties to the German criminal underground and was going to provide information vital to national security. Clearly, whoever killed him did not want him talking to MI6. Bond polemically alludes to the last minute change in plans: if getting the man alive was so important, someone might have thought to mention it in the briefing.

LONDON (Q’s OFFICE) AND EASTERN EUROPE (MAINLY PRAGUE):
Bond sets out to pick up the trail. His only lead: a partial image of the speedboat captured by the yacht’s security camera. Q analyses the image and manages to magnify a detail of the killer’s hands. He concludes that the killer was left handed and traces the origins of the rifle to Eastern Europe. The next sequence in the film shows Bond tapping some of his old sources in the post-soviet Eastern European underground (the most likeable and helpful of whom will be an American called Ken Snowman).

With the help of Snowman Bond continues his investigation in Prague having learnt that the killer is expected to rendezvous his contact at an auction in the Czech capital. The city has retained all the charms of its recent communist past (some picturesque elements pertaining to the arrival of Capitalism may be thrown in for local colour). At the auction, which is in fact a money-laundering (and secret payment) scheme for the organisation, Bond catches up with Trigger (the killer) who turns out to be a woman (the relevance of the title *The Property of a Lady* becomes obvious here). She seduces him and invites him to her hotel room; Bond knows it’s a trap but plays along. He sleeps with Trigger after loading her pistol with blanks. Rather than shoot him she chooses to poison him (at breakfast), but Bond, alert to the fact that the coffee is drugged, manages to exchange his cup for hers.

Later that morning Bond rifles through Trigger’s papers, recognizing a reference to “die Enthüllung” (a crystal sandglass filled with gold-powder and weighted at each end by two golden slabs with star-shaped gems lodged at the centre). Bond realizes this had been the lot an anonymous bidder had bought at auction to settle (and launder) Trigger’s payment. Bond shares the info with Snowman who traces the objet d’art to Piotr Malinovski, a Finnish-Russian billionaire.

PRAGUE, CASINO AND SUITE OF LUXURY HOTEL OWNED BY MALINOVSKI; THEN SECRET WAREHOUSE:
Bond proceeds to the Casino of a hotel where, he is told, Malinovski’s girlfriend, Paulina, spends most of her evenings (after sleeping with Bond she will cynically explain that what she likes best about being Malinovski’s girl is the free credit at the casino). With her help Bond discovers that Malinovski runs an international black-market dating from his years as a British double-agent in the cold war. His traffic (mainly secret-service records and laundered agency funds) allows him to manipulate the power race set off in Eastern Europe during the dissolution of the soviet empire. At some point in their conversation Paulina casually mentions a warehouse in which Piotr keeps all hard-copies of his files. That same night Bond and Ken Snowman break in but the warehouse turns out to be empty and Paulina’s tip merely a trap. (The audience learns about the trap in advance when, just before the break-in, the film cuts to Paulina on the phone with Piotr). Inside the warehouse a gunfight ensues, Snowman dies but Bond manages to shoot his way out. He then storms back into Paulina’s room where he forces her to tell him all she knows. Paulina admits having double-crossed Bond but explains she did not have a choice as Malinovski knew all about Bond’s movements and had instructed her to set the trap. Now she agrees to help Bond adding that, if Malinovksi were to learn he is still alive, her life would be in danger.

Bond tells Paulina to inform Malinovski that the trap at the warehouse had gone as planned and that all three shooters involved (Bond and the two henchmen) are dead. With her help Bond also learns that among Malinovski’s contacts is a high-placed operative in the British service whom Malinovski is blackmailing for material he intends to use to support a terror campaign by a fake separatist Lithuanian group. In Malinovski’s plans the campaign would inevitably fail but the alleged British involvement would be brought to light strengthening the position of anti-west communist hard-liners in Moscow, and starting off a repressive military campaign in the Baltic, thus turning back the clock on the end of the cold-war. Now Bond’s mission is to kill Malinovski but only after he has discovered who the blackmailed British agent is.

FINLAND, “THE BOHEMIA” HUNTING LODGE AND ENVIRONS:
Bond is in Finland where Malinovski owns a luxurious hunting lodge (plus annexed grounds, a small forest and artificial lake) which is to serve as the site of his rendezvous with the ex-British agent. The sequence opens with Bond already on the premises, dressed as one of the kitchen staff. As he makes his way to the guest quarters (upstairs) he is surprised by security. A fight ensues. Bond manages to get the security guy off his back, but the clamour alerts Malinovski’s guest, and he escapes. Bond chases him across the ice-lake on a motorized sleigh. The chase ends with both Bond’s and the ex-agent’s vehicles overturned. The agent tries to get up but he is trapped under the weight of the sleigh. Bond hobbles up to him gun in hand, and recognizes him as Major Dexter Smythe. He starts to say something, by way of telling him it’s all over, when he realizes the man has swallowed a cyanide pill.

TRAIN, FIRST CLASS CABIN: SOMEWHERE ON THE PARIS-LONDON ROUTE
Paulina appears bored as she converses with a young security guard about her forthcoming testimony while they play cards. She complains that playing for fake money is no fun, and saucily suggests higher stakes. The guard pretends to ignore her, so she says she wants to turn in. The guard checks that all the doors are locked and steps into the communicating compartment as Paulina gets ready for bed. There is something staged about the scene. Paulina secretly leaves the cabin and we know she is making for the gambling room on board the train. Soon enough Malinovski steps out of the shadows with a tense nylon string. He clasps Paulina’s face from behind and drags her into another compartment. He is about to strangle her, but it’s a trap. Bond appears from nowhere. A fight ensues which ends with Bond killing the man and saving the girl. Fade out on the couple finally alone inside the compartment.

That's pretty good, but my only complaint is that it's too similar to a lot of the present Bond films. Perhaps if you could work on making the action scenes more unique, then it would be even better than it is.;%

I like it, shows a good imagination and a good grasp of Bond circa 1987-89, although as weezer saYs some scenes do seem familiar, but then it is hard not to avoid repetition in Bond-agE. My main concern is the plotting, which is hard to follow even on paper; what would an audience make of it??? Tough call...

Thanks for the reactions and suggestions. Yes I agree that the action is somewhat bland and familiar.

To be honest, I was concerned with making the film as recognizably Bondish as possible, while keeping to the sober spirit of Dalton (and his modern incarnation Craig). So... a minimum of explosions, and more emphasis on the dynamics of detection and double-crossing which in my view is the bread-and-butter of spy fiction. But granted, a Bond movie is more than just a spy movie.
I did struggle a bit with the ending, trying to find a more memorable and original way to kill off the villain. But that's where my imagination failed me and I reverted to the classic "struggle in a train compartment".
Folks are welcome to suggest alternative scenes and amendations to the script (perhaps we can find a way to include all scenarios and call it a *double-disc ultimate edition*) :D

    Thanks again

Any chance they might have ditched the Chinese elements and gone for something closer to the fall of the Berlin Wall and imminent decline of the Soviet Union?

Surely GE's plot elements (factions post fall) were closer to what would've really happened in a 1991 or 1992 film with Dalton?

According to Some Kind of Hero, there was a full screenplay written by MGW, Alphonse ruggiero jr, William Osborne, and William Davies.

It was to be set in England, Las Vegas, Vancouver, mainland China, and Hong Kong. There were elements of GoldenEye in it. The PTS shows Bond hang gliding and infiltrating a facility in Libya.

It also featured a stealth fighter, called the Scimitar, developed by the British and worth billions in arms sales to the economy. It is stolen while on exercise with the US Navy. Bond is sent to track it down. It is to be used to launch an undetectable nuclear attack on China, causing regime change, allowing General Han to take over. Han will then grant Hong Kong to Sir Henry Lee Ching.

On a side note, Q Branch was to be shut down by Nigel Yupland and Moneypenny is engaged.

There are other elements from the Bond 17 draft. Thats about all of GE that was used. Of course, i cant be certain.

So until the film was delayed, China was undoubtedly going to be the setting.

    As much as I love GE, this film, apart from some of the robo ****, sounds pretty good. -{

As much as I would love there to be another Dalton film, I believe that based on his tenure already that it would've performed poorly and been poorly received in the same manner as LTK - even if it was a better film. Furthering the decline of Bond that began with AVTAK...

Personally I think that had LTK been released in November, been marketed better, and not been given a 15 certificate in the UK, that it would have been more successful.

Apparently, they were going to address some of these issues with Bond 17. MGW said the planned release date was set for late 1991. My guess is that they would've shot up the advertising, and go for a lighter tone in order to not alienate the audience.

And I think Dalton would've been more accepted as he went on. He just needed to lighten up and have a better haircut. :))

But of course we'll never know.

Sounds like this had the potential to be a very good film. Pity it was never filmed.

I'm sorry, but that just sounds awful. GoldenEye is far from perfect, but it's a lot better than this sounds.
