Why in hell aren't you trying to write comics? :))

Thanks Rogue but you give me too much credit. Coming up with an decent idea every now and then isn't that hard. Fleshing it out into a coherent story is quite another matter.

I loved it too until I got to the "Amid their skirmishes a new threat arises and forces the two heroes to put aside their differences and work together to save the day" line. Sounds like every other team up movie - you know, this is Nolan's dark world, so could we just have them stay enemies?
Really, together we can come up with something a little more unique, I think. :))

Quite honestly Night, I respect Nolan's worldview for these movies, but I can't say that I like it all that much.

Yes, you could work some dark, twisted storyline where some villain twists Superman's sensibilities by killing Lois Lane and Batman is forced to prevail by killing Superman with a Kryptonite batarang or something.

But I try to view these heroes in a more positive and optimistic light and think that there's room for a little hope even in Batman's dark little world. Besides, having Batman and Superman get along is true to the spirit of the comics. That may not be all that important to Nolan ( or you, it seems :p ) but it is important to me.

By the way, Kryptonite batarang? BEST. IDEA. EVER.

I thought that this bit of news was interesting:

    Million-disc Knight
    10 November 2008 10:43 AM, PST

The Dark Knight will be the first million-disc Blu-ray release, Video Business reported on its website Friday, noting that just last year -- in March 2007 -- Sony set a record when it shipped 100,000 Blu-ray copies of Casino Royale. Many of the Dark Knight discs, the trade publication said, will be bundled with hardware, including Blu-ray players and game devices. "If a household is on the fence about making a Blu-ray player or PS3 purchase, this title can be influential in making that happen," Warner Home Video's Dorinda Marticorena told Video Business. The Los Angeles Times reported on Friday that several major studios and consumer electronics firms plan to spend $25 million during the holiday season as part of their "Tru Blu" campaign to promote Blu-ray releases.

Picking up the extended footage DVD tomorrow, looking forward to seeing some of the extras. Many stores have a little extra Batman toy if you purchase the DVD at their location. Have to see what ;ittle extra looks best. I can choose from an "official" Joker playing card, Batman or Joker Mask, or an official Batman logo journal. So many choices!

I got the BluRay edition today. The presentation of the movie is just amazing; the level of detail is superior even to when I saw it on the big screen and the BluRay edition includes the Imax sections, which are even more detailed and colorful, in their proper aspect ratio of 1.78:1 (the rest of the film is presented at 2.35:1). I thought the jumps in aspect ratios would be jarring, but they actually are quite seamless. The action is also much easier to follow and I could make out all of Batman's moves during the fights.

I was however quite disappointed by the lack of original extras. There is no "making of" documentary and the features provided were recycled shows previously shown on A&E and the Biography channel. There also aren't any commentary tracks for the movie.

So overall, a great presentation of a great film but really lackluster extras. The added color and clarity of the BluRay version were well worth the added cost and hardcore Batman fans (I'm talking to you Rogue) should really check this out on a good hi-def TV.

As an aside, I also finally figured out one of the other people Two-Face kills (a plot point that had been bugging me for months): as Maroni and his lackeys are getting into their car, you can just make out Two-Face taking out one of Maroni's goons on the far left of the screen; he puts him in a choke hold and drags him off camera. Its a quick scene and my brother actually missed it the first time thru, but its clearly there if you know where to look. That now accounts for 4 of the 5 people Two-Face killed that Batman took the rap for.

I bought TDK yesterday myself, and I'm in full agreement with Tony about the lack of extra features. What a disappointment! (I thought at the very least there would be some kind of tribute to Heath Ledger.) I guess the sole purpose of putting those scant extras on a second disc was so people can plug it into their computers and download their free digital version of the film. Oh, well, at least I got a kewl Target Batman mask-case out of it!

I haven't had a chance to check out the extras on mine yet but I think that WB is just withholding alot of the goodies for some new Director's Cut Platinum Edition or something outrageous like that to milk more dollars out of ravenous fans.

Not enjoying my copy anyway seeing that the damn thing keeps freezing up on me at different chapters in the film; I've got to return mine tomorrow.

The Golden Globe nominations were just announced. The Dark Knight was expected to be a serious contender in several categories but only the late Heath Ledger received a nomination for Best Supporting Actor.

I really wasn't expecting TDK to have much of a presence as these awards are often shams and typically shun recognizing genre films. Nice that Ledger got some recognition though; hopefully AMPAS (home of the Oscars) will follow suit.

Here's a link to IMDB's page on the noms:

Nice. Hope Heath wins. If he does it might increase his chance of winning an Oscar.

Got my DVD of TDK today. However, I'm so jaded (and convinced that a Super Deluxe Ultimate Cynical Money-Grabbing Collector's Special Double-Bat-Dipper Edition will come out at some point) that I only bought the single disc Vanilla Widescreen copy for now :p

In a quick interview last night at the Golden Globes, actor Aaron Eckhart really dodged the question whether or not his character Harvey Dent/Two-Face is set to return. For those that saw TDK, there really wasn't any closure to his character and it was left somewhat ambiguous as to what happened to him. Here's the clip:

    http://www.superherohype.com/news/batmannews.php?id=7980

Not sure what's going to happen to the franchise down the road but how great would a return with him for a third be? B-)

Maybe he's as in the dark as fans are...in that case, I hope that the director seriously considers Black Mask as a potential villian.

Heath Ledger won a posthumous Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor last night. An Academy Award may very well be a possibility.

That's interesting to hear since up until this point everyone from Nolan on down was pretty adamant that Harvey had died at the end of TDK (Nolan even said as much in an online chat during a BluRay showing of TDK). Seeing as the Two Face character was somewhat tacked on to the last 1/4 of the movie, and was largely overshadowed by The Joker, I wouldn't mind seeing seeing him in a third Nolan film. They could definitely do more with the character and also use him as a bridge from TDK to part 4, especially if they plan to follow up on that plot thread of Batman taking the rap for the murders committed by Harvey Dent/Two-Face.

Also very happy to see that the best supporting actor nod went to the late Heath Ledger. I didn't see all of the other actors nominated, but Ledger disappeared so completely into his character that I just can't imagine anyone else being more deserving. Here's hoping he'll repeat at the Oscars.

He's also won several critics awards thus far, so I think he will be the absolute favourite. A great performance, no doubt about it, but I'm not sure if it was the best supporting performance of 2008; it was quite mannered and after two viewings, I'm still unconvinced that it's not like the rest of DK; just not worth the hype. Perhaps I should see it again. I will say this though; none of the supporting performances in 2008 were IMO as good as Javier Bardem's performance in No Country For Old Men, which won the 2007 Oscar. But then again, that was always going to be a tough act to follow.

FWIW, I've seen Dark Knight a few more times at home on BluRay and I enjoy it more with each viewing. Its definitely a different experience at home from watching it in a theater on the big screen. The film's tone and visuals were almost overwhelming at times at the theater but at home I'm more relaxed and as I can control my environment and the picture to my liking I'm able to get into the film more and discover all sorts of new little nuances (like the way The Joker apologetically says "Hi" to Harvey when he's strapped in the bed). It's certainly a fast 2 1/2 hours. Try it yourself, you may end up seeing the movie in a different light.

Too bad those emo Spiderman cry-athons don't play any better at home. {:) (Couldn't resist! :)))

Well let's hope so. We shall see who he'll be up against (if he's nominated) and what the critics say. Sometimes critics hint at how their friends voted so listen for that to.

My personal take is, the Academy Awards seem to be a very "Classy" event. They don't take performances like comic book movies seriously. I could be wrong, but I bet Heath will be nominated because he "fell" into the role, but won't win because it's a comic book type movie.

The Oscar nominations have been announced. As expected Heath Ledger was nominated for Best Supporting Actor. Robert Downey Jr. was also nominated for his hilarious race-bending performance in Tropic Thunder; its an equally ingenious and brave performance deserving of recognition. Ideally, they should both win.

Other than that category, AMPAS played it pretty safe, opting to continue their trend of recognizing "prestige" and "oscar-bait" films that hardly anyone watches. The Dark Knight was nominated for a slew of technical awards but was passed over in all of the "meaningful" categories. Predictably, most of the nominations were typical of a short-sighted academy that still refuses to take genre films seriously. Its no wonder interest in their selections is in decline and the ratings for their broadcast have been in freefall for years.

The Oscars really don't matter to me much; their pompousness and refusal to take off the blinders to the comic genre proves that they are comfortable staying in the Stale Ages.

None of the films nominated do I have a desire to see anyway. I heard that they even snubbed The Wrestler? WTF is up with that? ?:)

Well, Mickey Rourke was nominated for his performance.

On a side note, I don't think Heath is going to win, neither will Robert Downey Jr. The Academy will use the nominations to recognize two great performances, but in the end the Academy will go with the "safe bet" and give either Josh Brolin, Phillip Seymor Hoffman or Michael Shannon the nod.

I think the Oscar ought to go to Robert Downey Jr.,but that it's far more likely to go to Heath Ledger, as both a show of sympathy for his early demise, as well as honoring his talent.Should this happen, the Academy will probably view Ledger's Oscar as an award for his complete body of work--and not simply for his turn as The Joker. In fact,I suspect that nearly everyone nominated in this category--as well as the all of the other nominees-- expects Ledger to win, and will be shocked if he does not.

But having said this,it's possible that neither Downey or Ledger will win, and that the Oscar will instead go to Josh Brolin or Phillip Seymour Hoffman--both of whom have become favorites of the critics, the public, and the Academy. And Mr.Martini makes an excellent point--the award could certainly go to Michael Shannon. As history shows, every once in a while the Academy defies "easy" predictions, and this could prove to be one of those moments.

I love the Oscars. But this year really annoys me. Alright, I gotta say it. Ledger? Deserved nomination, but I'm not sure if he deserves to win. Downey Jr? As I have noted a while back, I regard him as extrely overrated (capable of deliviering great performances but not IMO a great actor). I'm quite suprised that he has been oscar-nominated for Tropic Thunder. I don't think it was a particularly great performance, and certianly not Oscar-worthy.

Also, why was Phillip Seymour Hoffman nominated for Support for Doubt? Why was Meryl Streep, whose performance was IMO quite unimpressive, nominated at all (instead of Kristin Scott-Thomas from I've Loved You So long) and why was the underrated Brad Pitt nominated for the overrated Benjamin Button? Why did that bore pick up 13 nominations, including Picture, when Eastwood's two films Gran Torino and Changeling were all but ignored? :s
