The Joker in Dead End was indeed Walter Koenig's son.
And IGN has posted a larger pic of Nolan directing Ledger as the Joker. Hard to make out thru the opque glass, but this larger pic makes it look like the eyes and mouth are very similar to the pic on the "hacked" Harvey Dent site. Have a look:
That's what I thought when I first saw the small picture. Personally, I like the frightening look.

I guess I'm more of a traditionalist so I'd prefer something a bit less grotesque and a bit less disfigured, but that's just my personal preference. It is what it is; the important thing for me is how he fits into the story and that Nolan not discard everything about the character, like Tim Burton did with Penguin in Batman Returns.
and that Nolan not discard everything about the character, like Tim Burton did with Penguin in Batman Returns.
How did the cinematic Penguin depart from the comics?
"He’s a man way out there in the blue, riding on a smile and a shoeshine. And when they start not smiling back—that’s an earthquake. and then you get yourself a couple of spots on your hat, and you’re finished. Nobody dast blame this man. A salesman is got to dream, boy. It comes with the territory." Death of a Salesman

the comic book character had the Penguin being a civilised gentleman villian. He wasnt badly deformed or anything.
Burton came along and changed that, having him be a figure hiding in the shadows attempting to be accepted by polite society...and was badly deformed. Nice little twist on what was done.
Personally i love Batman returns, and loved what was done with the characters,

Okay, I didn't realise that. Apparently Burton disliked the comics, so perhaps that's why he changed it. I don't really like Batman Returns but I much prefered it to Batman and Robin, surely one of the worst comic book films ever made. 8-)

As Taity said, Burton radically changed the appearance and motivation of Penguin. Catwoman was also transformed from the bored socialite of the comics to a repressed secretary with multiple personalities. Batman Returns was a visually striking movie, and it has some great action and even great acting (the scene were Batman tears his cowl off and begs Selina to go with him is actually quite touching) but in the end it really doesn't have all that much in common with the comic characters.
Tim Burton made no secret of his lack of interest in the comics and thus transformed the Batman universe into something he could relate to - and that ultimately alienated him from the fans and the execs at WB. I think Nolan is smart enough to not fall into the same trap. Regardless of how the Joker looks, hopefully his modus operandi will still be recognizable.

I can't even WATCH Batman Returns. Utter dreck, IMO.
I can't even WATCH Batman Returns. Utter dreck, IMO.
It is a very downbeat movie. And it's not nearly as expansive as the 1989 Batman, which I thought had a better balance of laughs and pathos. Still, it does have some good moments. The scenes where Batman fights the Red Triangle Circus Gang are all well done, as is the sequence where Penguin electronically hijacks the Batmobile. So while it ranks low on my list as well, it's still better than Batman & Robin.
I love Batman Returns. I think it's one of Burton's best movies. It's so dark and twisted that I can understand why a lot of people don't like it. But in terms of Batman on screen, I'll take the animated series every time.
the only problem I really had with batman returns was that it looked cheap and rushed, the sets just didn't live up to batmans and what about chris walken's appaling fright wig!!!
The Phantom '96 movie wasn't exactly good either *shudder*
I really enjoyed that film. Speaking of which, and I know that it's off-topic, but what are the chances of there being another Phantom film?

Its funny, batman returns had a larger budget, but it does have a cheaper look about Gotham. Call me crazy, but I blame the studios they were made at. Batman was made at Pinewood with Returns made in LA LA land. Maybe a dollar went further in England than it did in America.
Burton to me is a mixed director. This guy did Mars attacks after all. However, he also did charlie and the chocolate factory. I believe Burton is in his element when he's presenting a darker image of popular culture.

I used to love Tim Burton. However nothing he has done since Ed Wood has satisfied me. Corpse Bride came closest, but still wasn't enough.
Batman Begins easily trumps any other Batman flick, in my book. However, I would easily take the Burton flicks over the Schumacher flicks.
I have very fond memories of Batman Returns. I saw it in the theater when I was six years old: it was one of the first films I saw at the theater. I enjoyed it immensely as such a youngster. The thing I enjoyed the most, though, was Michelle Pfeiffer in the Catwoman suit: it was at that point, as an innocent six year old, that I firmly realized that I am a heterosexual. Therefore, because of this, Batman Returns registers quite highly on the fondness scale.

Well I don't know about that (although it does seem that the best Batman movies are oddly not made in the US!), but that Gotham in Returns was just a fairly rubbish studio set whereas there was a lovely exterior set for the first, it's true. That is always a bit disappointing, although both are beautifully designed.
I also think Batman Returns suffered from the absence of production designer Anton Furst (who won an Oscar for his work on the 1989 movie). Tim Burton decided to use Bo Welch on Returns and frankly I don't think his designs were nearly as innovative or imaginative as Furst's. Furst really brought a lot to that first movie; everything from the retro art deco look of the city to that amazing Batmobile.

Here's something interesting. The link has two photos. One photo Tony already posted. But the second pic must be of a couple of henchman or something.

Furst was amazing. I love his work on Neil Jordan's The Company of Wolves.

I'm pretty sure that the crew is currently filming in the UK - perhaps somewhere in London. Anyone over there got an update as to what's up or seen anything?

Nolan and Bale on The Dark Knight
Source: ABC7Chicago.com June 8, 2007
ABC7Chicago.com has posted quotes from The Dark Knight director Christopher Nolan and star Christian Bale from today's press conference in Chicago, where shooting starts on Saturday:
"I also fell in love very much with the architecture of the city," said director Christopher Nolan.
"We tend to shoot at night like some kind of covert operation," he said. "So, we have minimal people actually seeing me in that way. But I'm sure they look and think 'Who the hell is that freak?' when they do come across me! Afterall, that should be the point because Batman is meant to strike fear into people's hearts. So, if they just thought, 'Yeah, yeah, it's Batman,' then it wouldn't work."
The Dark Knight Filming Update

Scooper 'Allen Panakal' sent in this brief bit about what The Dark Knight production is doing currently in Chicago:
They are filming at the chicago theater and i heard that they are renting a condo on Wacker.
Stay tuned for possibly more soon.
I have to say that this is the most POINTLESS news ever.
I really hate you about now. Go away. Batman news is never pointless. X-( )
I really put this up here to see if anyone in the immediate area has seen anything? Don't really know where these places are myself but I've been to Chicago...

I came across this while surfing around. This is supposed to be Batman's new suit from TDK; the pic is supposedly from Entertainment Weekly and AICN is also saying it's legit. Not really sure if I like it. It seems a little "busy" to me as I've always preferred a smoother, cleaner design. Have a look:

I remember reading somewhere that Batman changes his suit at some point in the movie; so we'll have to see if this is the Mk I or Mk II. I do think they went a little overboard with the detail. For what it's worth, my favorite suit was the one Kilmer wore for the first 2/3 of Batman Forever (sans nipples of course) - sleek, black, very understated, and it had the black bat on yellow oval.
