Bond with current Media Stories

Hi, I don't know if anyone brought this up, but I was watching "Tomorrow Never Dies" and noticed about the British sailors that were supposedly in international waters, but then were in Chinese waters. Interesting, we just saw something similar to that in the British sailors, who were in international waters, but were accused of being in Iranian waters.

I got to think how so many times the Bond movies are so similar to current affairs. Take for instance the Noriega thing with Sanchez and Licence to Kill. Then you've got Die another Day with the problem with North Korea. Also scientifically, the spaceshuttle and compare that to Moonraker. Mind when Moonraker came out they hadn't launched a spaceshuttle yet. That was a quite a bit later.

Even the books, last book by Raymond Benson about the musquitos. A year later or so, they thought that one the deadly muquitos outbreaks might have been the result of terrorism.

Then the whole war against terror. I think that one of the reasons, it is difficult to really make a correct judgement on what is happening with it and the war in Iraq is that we don't really get the full picture, because it deals with espionage and military intelligence. That's just like many of the Bond films and novels. Relying on the media for correct information can be huge mistake. Interestingly that M said in GoldenEye: "Unlike the Americans, we don't get our bad news from CNN." Then Elliot Carver is a great illustration why not to rely on Media, because it can be spun in whatever direction they want it to and actually end up making the news instead of just reporting on it.

Anyways, I was just struck with how with the relevance of these films in society.

Our sailors have strayed (supposedly) into iranian waters before. I'm sure that was before TND, so maybe they got the idea from that. I like adaptations on real life events or possible real life events. Makes it more real. In that way TND had a good idea.

Here in the USA we have three "free", that is non cable new networks; NBC, ABC and CBS.

On any given night you can "channel surf" all three and will find that they do the same stories in the same order with the same perspective. This is true of many of our local news operations as well.

I don't know who sets up the story order for the networks, but it seems the odds of this happening every night would be astronomical.

It would appear that Mr. Carver is still with us!
