I thought this article was interesting:

It draws parallels between the 1953 of Ian Fleming's novel Casino Royale and the 2006 of Eon's retooled James Bond, as depicted in the latest Bond film---"changing threats, iconic beliefs and moral ambiguities"---drawing as much on the evolution of the classic 'Anti-Hero,' it seems, as on our fundamental need for escapist thrills.

Either way, I think it bodes well for 007's future.

It's also a brief bio of Fleming himself, as noted on the 99th anniversary of his birth; interesting for those who might not already be familiar with it.

It's nice to see that a man of action never really goes out of style...a comfortable constant in this ever-changing, increasingly troubled world :007)

    Fantastic thesis on really the birth of modern times that we are now seeing coming full circle. Who are the terrorists/evil-doers? Them....us...?

    Fleming/Bond always looked back on the same questions. One mans terrorist is anothers patriot. But men of action will always be needed in this world.

    as will modes of escapism for down time from the hustle of our every day lives. So here's to our lad James. Lift up your Martini glasses.-{

    The films are going in the right direction to mirror our times. We don't all out fantastic plots to entertain us. Just an evil weapons smuggler in some remote corner of the globe.
