Bond Returns to The Alps

Do you guys suppose "Octopussy" (the novella) is going to be referenced? With perhaps, the final reckoning being a return to the place of the crime instead of a simple flashback-confession by the villain of the piece...

It somehow seems too neat, but I suppose a good writer could pull it off elegantly. I also didn't mind the whole "origins of Bond" theme in CR but I wouldn't want them to continue the trend in the next one with the whole Oberhauser backstory: IMO it would be too much of a good thing...

Ever since I saw Hannes Oberhauser referenced in Bond's updated dossier on the CR website, I've had a suspicion they were planting that seed for future use---and with Bond going to the Austrian Alps, my guess is that #22 will be it.

Craig's Bond arc is 'early career,' I think, so it makes a certain amount of sense. Still, the Oberhauser back-story is obscure enough (known only to Fleming readers, who as we all know are a definite minority of Bond fans) that it won't seem like an 'origin'-type story at all.

But I wouldn't rule out a 'twist' of some kind, where Oberhauser turns out to be the villain, rather than the victim :v Just guessing, here... ;)

Hmmn... now you're just messing with my mind. :s
Still I do hope Bond 22 will be inspired, as much as possible, by Fleming material and if this means that the new plot must be partly based on "Octopussy", then so be it.

How about this: "Risico" meets "Octopussy", with Vesper's Algerian boyfriend characterized as a mix of Kristatos and Major Smythe. I suppose Oberhauser could fit into the role Colombo plays in Risico, and the Carribean setting of Octopussy could be transposed to a remote seaside village in Sicily thereby preserving the villain's eccentric passion for acquatic fauna.

Looks like Switzerland hasn't giving up on hosting a bit of #22, according to CBn:

Should be interesting to see, although I've not heard anything about actual location scouting taking place in Switzerland, as it has in Austria and (most recently) several regions in Italy.

Switzerland continues its full-court press to get Bond back in their country for #22:

    http://commanderbond.net/article/4511

The suggestions made by the Swiss Film Commission all look intriguing...but you have to wonder if they still have a shot, with all of the scouting done in Austria...

With the footage already in the can from the Palio de Siena horse race in Italy...plus the 'establishing' shots lensed in Madrid, Spain...plus the additional scouting done in some southern provinces of Italy, it looks like things are taking shape nicely :007)

My guess is that it will be like a Bourne movie where it travels around alot of locations that are pretty close to each other. After all, Spain and Italy are almost neighbours. Just how CR was set in Montenegro, and ended up in Italy.

Unlike DAD where they got countries that were as different to each other as posible (N. Korea, Iceland, Cuba)

The crux of the article, courtesy of the unimpeachable UK tabloid The Sun, ( :p ) is that (Formerly) Poor DannyTM is in training for a ski sequence. As CBn reports:

"According to The Sun's source, 'For the first time since 1969's On Her Majesty's Secret Service film, Bond will be largely snow-bound. Much of it will be filmed in the Swiss Alps. The film is in pre-production for a major ski sequence.'"

    For what it's worth... ;)

That's rather fun. Although not faultless, the Sun is more on the ball with showbiz news than most tabloids.

Yeah, I saw that. Hope it's true and not another Sun shenanigan. That they used the word "pre-production" gives me hope. :p

As always, take your rumors with a goiter-killing dose of iodized salt. We've heard there will be locations in Puerto Rico and Israel, yet the film will be almost entirely snow-bound? Not impossible, but, I would suggest, highly unlikely.

Actually, I thought they were only doing a bit of casting in Israel, but I might well be wrong about that.

They certainly don't run the Siena horse race in the snow :)) It's probably much more likely that, like CR (which essentially split its three acts between the Bahamas, 'Montenegro' and Venice), probably one act will take place in the alps---maybe two, if they indulge my dream for a serious climbing sequence...but I've heard nothing about such a thing, so my hopes are beginning to fade on the 'Oberhauser' front :#

Location in Israel? Wasn't it just casting there?

These producers love snow, TWINE and DAD both had major sequences in snow/ice. Also, both GE and TND had pre titles in snowy locations. I liked that CR was completely snow free.

True enough; Brozzer was never completely snow free*...but if they're going to go that route with #22, I hope they do go 'all the way' and stage two of the three acts in the alps, and really make the snow an extra character, if you will...

But we've done skis quite a lot...[subliminal message: mountain-climbing]...I hope they do other things with the white stuff [snowmobiles]... :v

    * Someone from the Pedant Gallery will point out that CR had a bit of snow---in the opening B&W Prague 'establishing' shot---but that's little enough to qualify for snow free as far as I'm concerned :p

Looks like certain locations in Austria (specifically Bregenz) are in the process of being contractually 'locked in,' according to CBn:

I'd like to see 007 hit the alps. A good ski sequence could go down nicely.

Austria looks very promising - every day something new comes around for the Bond fanatic. Its good to be a Bond fan.

As much as I like both snow and skiing, I must admit I'm a bit skeptical about another ski-chase in a Bond movie. I just think it's a bit overused. But considering how great the action sequences in Casino Royale were, I don't doubt the filmmakers ability to create some great scenes in the Alps. But it has to be spectacular and a bit original, without being over the top.

And with all this global warming going on, maybe Bond 22 is our last chance to see James skiing?

here is how they could make it spectacular and origional - snowmobiles!

    - watercrossing by snowmobile: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OdjI9s7cotI

    - 100 feet jumps: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ru2B7_sv90

    -snowmobiling in snow-free streets: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=le5-R5zMv64

    - going up and down very steep mountains:

snowmobiling at this level has never (to my knowledge) been done in an feature movie.

Apparently, there is a scene in Bond #22 which calls for...
..."a long stretch of winding mountain road." B-)

Most recently, they've considered the Stelvio pass in the Italian alps, but another location in Italy was looked at back in August...

Perhaps the Goldfinger clone from Casino Royale chases Bond down seeking vengeance for the damage Bond did to his golden Range Rover in the Bahamas :v

Ironically, for a man who is playing high stakes gambler James Bond, he really doesn't have a very good poker face. Based on all his recent interviews, I believe that the title of Bond #22 is indeed locked in and I think that we should all welcome Mathieu Amalric as the next Bond villain. B-)

As far as Austria goes, I wouldn't count winter sports out just yet. Sadly, skiing just may not be "gritty" enough for Craig's Bond. They'll probably stick him on a snowboard or a snowmobile or something.

Whatever it is, I hope David Arnold picks out a great Beach Boys track to add some intensity to the sequence! {:)

TeeHee, how is a snowboard at all grittier than skiing? Snowmobile I can see as long as he isn't doing ridiculous stunts.

And now you're just mocking your own favorite Bond with the Beach Boys reference. :))

Snowboarding is just more popular right now, especially among today's youth. I would assume that many people would consider snowboarding more extreme than skiing. Of course I can't speak for all. ;)
