Bond's "00" status

I apologize if this a previously discussed issue.

However, in Casino Royale "M" laments at granting Bond his "00" status. Yet in Golden Eye, when we are introduced for the first time to both Brosnan as Bond and Dench as M, she says "you don't like me Bond,do you? you think I'm a bean counter, well unlike my predecessor....etc"

To me this implied that they were meeting for the first time.

I don't understand????

Any help on this issue would be gratefully accepted.

Cheers.

J.

Casino Royale was widely announced to be a "reboot"--the past films are forgotten, and Bond is on one of his first missions as a Double-0. Judi Dench was retained as "M" to add a familiar face in otherwise new proceedings. In short, GoldenEye and the other 19 previous films don't exist in CR's timeline.

...just try not thinking about it, it makes your head hurt.

definitely a slight 'hole' in the storyline. its a little absurd to act as if all the other movies have not happened explicitly because one of the charms of CR is the fact that we are getting introduced to the early developmental stages of a character we already know - and where do we know this character from? From the other films. There are too many references to things we would find out in subsequent stories (subsequent to the timeline presumed in CR) for one to just view the movie in isolation.

Would EON have to change all the casting to avoid this kind of problem?...

As much as I love CR I think it went on way too long and it was a bad idea to screw up the timeline 10times what it was.

I don't love that Judy Dench was brought back. If CR was going to be completely separate to the other films, I think they should have gonw with someone completely different. Plus, it's not as if the film's box office would have been affected by the casting of Dench. ;)

It wouldn't be the first time that EON cast the same actor to play different characters in a Bond film. While I'm sure that wasn't what EON had in mind when they cast Dench in CR, CTrent49's suggestion is the best way to handle it.

One of the things that irks me is that while we, the present Bond and CR audience, recognize this as a 'reboot', how will the film be viewed fifteen or twenty years from now when the series is pulling in neophyte fans? Will they recognize CR as a reboot or assume that M in GE and CR are the same and think she's dotty.

Heh! Must be all the booze she was drinking in the 90's! She even thought that James Bond was a tall, dark man for a while! :)
