Interesting speculation there about perhaps Craigger having his back turned at the beginning of the gunbarrel, then drawing and turning (or turning and drawing?)...

That wouldn't be bad...although I wouldn't put too much stock in the 'back view' shot of Craig---Greg Williams' Bond On Set books often show candid 'behind the scenes'-type shots, and this might well just be one of those.

Either way, the gunbarrel is on...the only question is: How traditional? Like I say, I like the holster in the waistband, just for something different.

Hands down the most Bondian shots of Daniel Craig I've seen! :o

    I'm intrigued... :D

Holy crap! You just used 'Bondian' and 'Daniel Craig' in the same sentence---in a positive way...

I think I'm having chest pains...is this the big one...?

Very nice. I have to say, I'm a huge fan of Brosnan's gunbarrels. Being used to the way he sort of kicks that back leg out, I am a little concerned that Craig looks like he's tipping forward a bit---not as balanced as Brosnan. If only he could move that right leg out a bit.

Then again, I would be premature to judge a moving shot by one still frame. Also, we don't know if any of these photographs represents one of the takes that will actually be used.

On the plus side, I like that they are keeping that look from CR with the jacket flailing out.

Why am I complaining at all, though? These look really cool. I am getting really psyched now...

    :))

You best put the defibrillator away. My praise for Daniel Craig will more than likely be short-lived, for I have little confidence that the Bondian aura will continue post-gunbarrel. :#

But as always, I'd like to be pleasantly surprised. :D

Oh yes, certainly- it's more the way he's standing when he's got the gun out- doesn't look like he's stopped from a walk. But it's impossible to tell, and that most probably isn't the take they'll use anyway!
  • FitzochrisFitzochris Posts: 242MI6 Agent
Alas, it looks as if they've gone with the CR style gunbarrel but simply restored it to the beginning of the film and dressed Craig in a tux.

Having seen the pics and read the other CNB messageboard, I'll be surprised if the white dots and the walk return. I think It'll just start with Craig against a white background and he'll turn and shoot into a gunbarrel a la CR.

Very disappointing if that's the case.

I don't understand why they have to tinker so much with it. It's easy, get Craig to walk and shoot at the camera, put the white dots in, put a gunbarrel graphic around him and stick a decent rendition of the Bond theme over it...it's popular, it's wanted by the fans and it takes no more than 20 seconds of screen time. Why mess with it?

I think it's far too early to be bemoaning any choices they've made: all we know for certain is that there is a gunbarrell, Craig's in a dinner suit for it, it's against the old white background, and he's using a PPK. We know nothing else about it so there's no point in getting all upset about something that probably isn't true.

On page 152 of the Bond on Set book, there's a colour pic of the gunbarrel set. It shows someone in a baseball cap in the 'pose'.

The interesting thing about the pic are the black lines on the floor and the mark.

I could be wrong of course, but they would indictate a track to keep Daniel walking in a straight line and to mark exactly where to turn and shoot.

True. But if I go expecting that and then it's the traditional gunbarrel, I'll be pleasantly surprised :p

    They are good pictures.

I like the sound of Craig pulling the pistol out of his jacket, then firing. It is something different that hasn't been done. It is putting a stamp on the sequence, that the other Bonds before him have done.

If that were the case then I'd be delighted. However, the way the pics are presented it's as if the photographer has told the story of the shoot with his pics. Ie filming starts with Craig's back to the camera, he spins round while drawing his PPK, and then he fires.

True enough, although Greg Williams does manage to get offbeat and more arty shots out of his subjects, rather than point and shoot reportage.

Either way, we'll all know very soon.

    Can't wait!

No, that's not the way these books have worked before. Why has he included the camera crew if he's trying to tell the story?

No, I don't mean he's trying to tell the story of the film through photography, I suggested he might be trying to tell the story of the shoot. In other words, capturing the three stages of Craig's turn and shoot as it was filmed over three takes.

I hope you two are right and I am wrong on this, however.

i think the pics are great, the gun barrel is so iconic, this slighht tweak (i.e: turning round and shooting) is fine by me, I always shudder everytime I see the bullet scream towards the camera in Die Another Day's barrel it's complete overkill. But this idea is in keeping with Casino Royale and is not shoehorned in. The only thing I can think is how the music will work, surely David Arnold won't be able to get the whole theme in like with previous flicks. Besides there have been tweaks in the past, On Her Majesty's Secret Service has Saltzman and Broccoli's name enscribed just before and Lazenby does that random drop to one knee and fire thing. Always loved the way in the early Connery ones, Bond (I think it was Bob Simmons who did ti first) seems to jump a couple of feet.

Which is why I think it's a bad idea to veer away from the traditional gunbarrel sequence.

Well the Pierce gunbarrel was always too short- Arnold didn't manage to get the full thing in as in previous Bonds; not even in Die Another Day which was the most traditional of all of his versions so far- the guitar melody is curtailed.
  • FitzochrisFitzochris Posts: 242MI6 Agent
But the Goldeneye composition managed it, if a little electronically quirky. I always felt Arnold got his first two gunbarrel scores wrong. The DAD score was along the right lines but I agree it felt a little rushed.

Anyway, I got my Bond On Set book today and having seen it, I'm not sure what to expect from the gunbarrel sequence for QoS. The shot of DC's back isn't technically even in the gunbarrel shoot section, so who knows. There's a good pic of DC, Forster and a technicial assistant looking over whatever gunbarrel footage they've filmed.

A pal sent me this footage and said to note the white background and DC's attire at 0:45 seconds in. He reckons this is what is featured in the Bond On Set book and not the gunbarrel sequence.

That's a nice little run of interviews and 'B' footage, Fitzo! However, I tend to think the white background we see at :45 is from the scene at the opera, and is a coincidence (in terms of the white background). Of course I could very well be wrong. I hope the Bond On Set photos depict the gunbarrel sequence.

If anybody wants some random facts, the Gun barrel was shot with Daniel Craig on Monday 21st April 2008 on Pinewoods 'A' stage. The same day as the sinkhole scenes (the cave as seen in the trailer)

LOO7K OUT, how are you so sure and precise with the date and time? Not long to go until we know about the gunbarrel for certain.

I keep searching, but we're still no closer to an answer, however, it's got to be there, it's even glimpsed in the second trailer at the end.

Not really: there's only the rhythm of the Bond guitar riff there -not the actual riff itself- and it ends before the tune finishes because the gunabarrel isn't long enough.
I do think the GoldenEye one is the best 'alternative' gunbarrel we've had though- better than Arnold's ones, yes.

I've got that days paperwork and schedule in front of me B-)

Requirements for the day include white backing on A stage for Gun Barrel and weapon provided by the armourer for Gun Barrel.

Strictly no visitors to set or stages and all crew to sign confidentiality forms.

All trivia really, but I like little bits like this.

Another bit of trivia: one of the test shoots they did prior to the main shoot was in relation to a scene involving Gemma Arterton that was spoiled by various newspapers last week.

Same here; Bond history being made B-)

So with the gunbarrel in place, and the dancing nude silhouettes ( :x ) making a triumphant return in the titles, it's hard not to be terribly excited!

Agreed. The whole thing is very exciting. Can't believe you got the shooting schedule, L007k Out, that's pretty neat.
