Hello everybody! I haven't been on the site in a while--Uni takes most of one's time, but now I'm on Spring Break. While I was out, I bought a new car! Well, it isn't brand new, but it's still very nice. I would like to humbly ask for opinions...

Meet the '98 Mercury Sable. :) This picture isn't of the exact car, but it looks almost exactly the same. It comes with everything, power: locks; windows; seats, great stereo, etc.

I was actually looking for a Honda Accord, but I ended up choosing this instead! Well, what do you guys think? Does it suit a college bachelor who wants to be like Bond? Your thoughts, please.

...Also, I need ideas of what to name it. Lisa? Sophie? Domino? ;)

    Hey Sly Fox,

It just so happens that my parents own a Sable. It's a 2000 I believe. Nevertheless, I have driven it myself many times and have found the ride to be incredibly smooth. My parents have had her for eight years now, and to my knowledge there has not been too many mechanical problems with it. She is still going strong to this day.

Both reliabilty and affordability make the Mercury Sable an ideal choice for the cash-strapped college student, and I should know. Ironically, it is my understanding that my parents will be giving me the old Sable when I myself graduate from college! :D

Nothing says "Now that you've graduated, get the hell out of my house," like the keys to the old family car! :))

Sly, best of luck to you on your latest automobile purchase! See you on the roads my friend! B-) {[]

Congrats on the car. My dad also drove a Mercury Sable. I think it was a 1998 also. I don't recall any major mechanical problems on it. He also bought his used. He drove it up to 200,000+ miles. It's a shame though, since he bought his Explorer, the Sable has been forgotten. Sitting in the driveway, collecting "stuff" on it. Have fun with your car.

    oo nice car, Sly ^^

as for names, I'd go for Martha, personally...but if you want a Bond girl name, Domino fits as well :D

I like Sophie. Claudia is another possibility. I think that exotic names are best and Lisa doesn't sound particularly exotic IMO, while Domino is of course great, but among Bond names, I think there are some better ones; such as Xenia, Tatiana and Natalya. :D

Is the color of your car the same as in the pic? If so, a name I'd consider (if your car is White) is Miranda or Ms. Frost.

Last month I bought a Mazda RX8 which believe me is incredibly less practical than the Renault I was driving before. As for names, the RX8 has been dubbed "Maximus".

We don't get Mercury Sables over here. I'd say it's rather like a Hyundai, and probably a very efficient car. Enjoy your freedom and good fuel economy!

Wow, I never thought this thread would get this many replies! Thanks guys!

I never knew these cars were popular, either. I have to say after driving it a few days it is a very nice car. It handles very well, quite fast too. Plus it makes a nice roaring sound when you step on the gas, letting you know it's alive. :)

Tee Hee, it's good to know that things are cheap on this car. I like to do basic maintenance myself, as I'm very meticulous about cars. However when something has to be taken to a dealer just to change a spark plug, it ends up getting put off indefinitely. It's funny that the General mentions practicality, since with my previous car, you needed to be a contortionist with special tools just to tune it up. With the Sable, you can reach the spark plugs with your bare hands--just the way I like it. ;) Spark plugs on this one are only around a dollar each. I even changed the air filter today, which was a measly five dollars. :D

Since Mr. Martini asked, my Sable is the exact same gold color. Although I'd rather not name the car after a villain. It might go evil on me... :s I was just cruising through Jamesbondmm's website in the Bond Girls section and found Serena Scott, the actress who played Dr. Warmflash in TWINE. How about "Serena?" It sounds rather exotic to me. Its theme song can even be "Chariots of Fire." :D

You could always name your car Pussy Galore. ;) :007)

Congrats on the new car Sly; hope you enjoy it for many years to come.

As to a name, given your love of the Final Fantasy games, I'm surprised you haven't picked a name from that series.

Or you could call it "Fiona" since Luciana Paluzzi drove a Ford in Thunderball.

Am I the only one who would never ever consider naming a car, and frankly finds it a little strange? :s :))
    Relax darling, I'm on top of the situation -{

yes, Felix...I think you are ;) Everyone I know with a car has a name for it. My favorite is my friend's Baretta...it's called Zeppo. ^^

Hey Tony, I did consider naming it after something out of Final Fantasy, but none of the names I could think of had the panache I was looking for. Fiona is a clever name, but the name has unfortunately been spoiled by Shrek (don't get me wrong, I love Shrek, but my car would go evil on me if I gave it the name of an ogre :)) ).

I have actually taken to "Serena," so I'll probably stick with that. Really, I don't think it's strange at all to name a car. With the bad luck I've had with cars in the recent past, it's almost as if they have minds of their own. Therefore I'm going to do all I can to keep my newest car happy, which includes giving it a name... :D

By the way, I'll be posting pictures within the next few days.

Okay, I know it's been a while, but I said I would post pictures and I am here to do just that. ;)

Me again. I do believe this is the definitive picture of me--behind the wheel, ready for the open road...A front view.A little artsy...I was looking for something to mildly decorate it with, something a bit expressive. I happened to come across this hat that looks like it could be from the Moore or Dalton era. I couldn't find any stickers or decals that weren't over-the-top or gaudy, so I thought this might do. What do you think?:)" alt="Well there you have it. I must say that after driving it a good while, I have grown very fond of the car I have dubbed "Serena." Any thoughts, now that there are pictures to go with words? :)" />

I like it alot, and I love that you decorated it with a Bond hat. :D Out of curiosity, why call it Serena?

Nice work detailing it. That's something i have to do to my car, when I have two to three hours to do it.

By the way Mr. Martini, detailing a car can really be as good as how much time you want to invest in it. It took me two days to fully detail mine inside and out. But if time is of the essence, a quick and simple job can take about an hour or two. :)
