I just received my Oliver Peoples Airman sunglasses today and I have to say I am quite pleased with them. They are sleek with a timeless look and they fit very well. You hardly know you are wearing them they are so light.
As I mentioned previously, mine are the gold frame with emerald lenses. Those of you who are awaiting the limited edition run will surely not be disappointed. I think these are the best sunglasses that have ever graced my coconut.
At the time I purchased the gold/emerald combo, I did so becaue I could not see myself spending $500 for a pair of sunglasses. However I am now seriously considering getting the limited edition from QOS as well.
I spoke with the aforementioned Zoe Dewald at Oliver Peoples in NYC this morning and she said she wasn't sure if the Bond Airman was going to be $400 or $450. She was going to check on that and get back to me.
She said when they were originally released they were $400 but that most of their polarized models run $450 so she wasn't quite sure.
I think I am in at any either one. It's still cheaper than the UK source by quite a bit with the dollar getting hammered. I am hooked on the gold ones I bought earlier this summer so as Bond would say, "I'm all in."
By the way, I dropped Simon's name and she said she had gotten quite a few calls from Simon's friends already.
I placed my order this afternoon with Zoe at OP NYC and the price was confirmed at $450...
We already know the number (150 pair). She didn't have the production number at the time...I had to share that with her but she did confirm that this will be a "super-super-limited edition." World-wide. Exciting stuff.
Get em while they're hot guys...
Off topic...This makes me even more excited about the Madagascar shirt as there will only be about 50 or so of those made.

Let me add to the rant...I think the Bond people don't want the fans to be buying Bond items so they can dress like Bond. $450 for sunglasses? Tom Ford suits? And those are the things they admit to using. Mantis has blogged about how companies are missing out by promoting their Bond products. I'm beginning to suspect they are afraid we will all be like the Star Wars fans who show up at the movies dressed like Darth Vader. Of course, we will but we won't be dorks about it...will we?

Newsman, I can see your point...to a point. I live in Milwaukee which was home to the GenCon convention for many years. Let me tell you, THAT was a freak show...straight out of the bar room scene from Star Wars. You'd have people walking Wisconsin Avenue in downtown Milwaukee dressed as the whole Star Wars cast...Darth Vader, Luke, Han, Chewie AND Princess Leia in the metal bra.
I've said this before but I think the Bond movies are great for "fashion challenged" men like myself. I've often referred to Bond's wardrobe as "Garanimals for men". If a product appears in a Bond film, I know it is a good quality product. And I don't have to second guess whether or not it is fashion forward. Its like having a celluloid version of GQ or Esquire. I readily admit that if I see something that looks cool in a Bond movie I, like many others here will be in search of that product.
I don't talk about this stuff outside of this forum because then I would be an overt geek. However, I enjoy being exposed to quality, understated stylish products...and I do enjoy the compliments that I get from people who think I am fashion forward. They just don't know my little secret. Like I said..."Garanimals for men".
Respectfully submitted by a sad git.
:007)
P.S. Did you happen to notice that Turnbull and Asser bow tie on my Smiley?
P.P.S. I actually think the Bond people wouldn't mind people showing up in Bond clothing. I mean, look at the premiers...everyone is dressed like Bond (tuxedo) haha. Seriously, product placement is huge...and if the fans did show wearing those things I guess that would mean it was a wise investment by the company placing that product in the movie because more people were exposed to their product and were moved to buy it. Win-win for the Bond franchise and the companies involved.
Oh please don't take anything I said as a slam against any Bond fan. I agree the great thing about Bond is that the series shows you how to dress like an stylish adult. I am not even so miffed that the use such high end stuff. It is just that the producers don't seem to go out of their way throw us fans any bones when we want to buy screen-specific stuff.

No offense taken. We've made fun of ourselves as sad gits before. Although, I do agree with you that it is sometimes difficult to identify certain products I guess half the fun is in the chase...
We also seem to halve a pretty savvy cadre of guys here (Paul, Simon, Mantis, Clarky, saint-antoine, et al) that are adept at seeking out and confirming the information we seek in a relatively short period of time which shortens up the curve for the rest of us. I am always amazed at how quickly these things get identified. Of course there is always an item that falls through the cracks like the Venice long sleeve polo that can't be tracked down...oh well, that's baseball.

Grow up, honetly. If you have to shell out hundreds of dollars on unnecessary "exclusive" items to make you feel "special and important," than you have a sad life. Isn't the idea of this board to engage as many fans as possible and get as many involved, instead of driving people away and creating divides? Who cares if something is exclusive? What is exclusive anyways? 100? 500? 1000? 10000? What difference does it make to you unless you are selling it? This idea of exclusivity exists only in your mind. Its a marketing technique. The reason companies jack up the prices on items is because they know saps like you will ridiculously overpay to buy this stuff. You would have a very hard time justifying the price of many of these "collectors" items. They call it a limited edition and you guys just eat it up like kids.
Instead of ranting about how great you are and your superiority while bashing those are "inferior", why don't you offer suggestions, ideas, and solutions instead of making stupid comments like this.
You guys really come across as idiots when you try to talk down to people on here and do a good job alienating people outside of the 7 or 8 of those in the circle of friends who continuously praise each other and love to talk about how wonderful they are. You may be adults, but you act very childish, selfish, and immature.

Hey Mister,
You must be a Socialist, um, er...I mean Democrat. Admit it, when you have something that is unique that not many people have, it gives you a warm fuzzy. This is human nature. By the way, exclusivity does not have a price tag. You can have a one of a kind item that didn't cost you a thing. No one is putting a gun to your head to purchase something you can't afford or think to be unnecessary.
Sometimes things just cost what they cost. Do you walk into McDonalds and order the $4.99 meal and tell them you are going to pay $1 because that is what YOU think the fair price is? I think not.
I loathe the fact that a positive thread is invariably jumped with a tale of woe by the likes of you and the positive members of the board are insulted and trashed as "childish, selfish and immature" and that they should "get a life."
Hey, I love capitalism...If you think that makes me a bad person then I suggest you crawl back into your cave after coming home from your union meeting and dream up something else you should be offended by today...
YOU sir, are the one that needs to get a life.
Rant over.

I've never bashed anyone apart from Bondtoys (and he deserved it). Anybody can collect what they like, I don't care, you say tomatoes, I say potatoes . It seems however you do because you're bashing the people that like limited editions, irrelevant of cost.
Never said I was superior. Did you make that bit up?
Never said I was wonderful either. Did you make that bit up too?
Selfish? I can't think of one intance here either.
Bashing inferior products? Never, may have criticised their accuracy or poor manufacture, but that's only fair.
Is exclusivity important? Of course it is, if we all had the same things, then life would be very boring. Not to mention the desiribility of items that are rare. We are collectors afterall, so this is VERY important.
The Oliver Peoples glasses being a limited run though, doesn't particularly bother me as I want to wear them. But to collectors who will store them in a collection, then the limitation is most important.
There's no need to throw insults, calm debate is always good.

Asp. I agree with you but I have an analogy you may get a kick out of. When I was an impressionable young man (12ish) my middle brother and myself used to smuggle Playboy magazines home from our Boy Scout paper drives. Because we were "childish" and "selfish" we did not share these with our youngest brother who very badly wanted to have his own collection. So start his own collection he did. It was a poor boy's porn collection that consisted of the ladies underwear pages from the JC Penney Catalog.
Calm debate aside, I think the moral of the story is that Mister needs to pay a visit to his local JC Penney's.

I agree that debate is a great thing.
The points I made were not directed at any one particular person, but rather at a group of people where it is quite evident they are impressed with themselves and like to take aim at people for deemed lesser quality collectibles or substitutes for those who can't afford the actual product or expensive reproductions and replicas. However, I take insult at your jest and mockery of my sincere request for other suggestions to the Madagascar shirt, and that was a selfish and immature comment. Again, I ask for a definition of exclusive? If 1000 people have something, what are the odds you would run into that person wearing it? You have a better chance of winning the lottery.
To me, I become upset and take offense when it seems like people take delight in excluding others. Some on here wear it as a badge of courage. If you want and can afford $500 sunglasses, fine, good for you, but when you showboat in peoples faces at how you have them and others can't get them, or criticize people for buying replicas or ones that look like them, thats rude. Sometimes people offer ideas and options, and I commend you for doing that.
Also, I love capitalism Shatterhand. I think some people on here undermine it because they are paranoid and have used questionable business tactics and feel the need to scramble. Capitalism should foster competition, not "I have this and it is mine and I'm not telling you where or how you can get it because that might lead to competition or someone else making more money than me because I was stubborn"

Nobody on this thread (and I just read through it) has ever flaunted the fact that they had anything that someone else did not. You just made that bit up too! Nobody has ever criticised people for buying replicas either, unless you are talking about illegal items that are morally a 'grey' area. People can do that, that's fair. If you are having a 'go' because the Maddy shirt is being kept exclusive, then you have no right either. That is one persons material. He may do as he wishes with it. I for one will go through Hell for that person, because he has put something on the table that has never been made available before, and it considerable CONSIDERABLE! expense to himself. If you don't like what is offered, then simply do not buy. But don't flame anyone for not delivering what you want. And please don't make things up so you can put a point across that is based upon things that are made up. What's the point in that?

Well, that's just my dry sense of humour, it was not intended as mockery or jest at you. But it was a very good point that I thought could not be missed. Omega make 10,007 items in an edition. I'm betting that there will only be about 30 of the Maddy shirts, now that IS limited don't you agree. Including the screen used ones, that means that there will be only 60 worldwide. And half of the screen ones were absolutely wrecked. If that on it's own doesn't make them desirable, I'll eat my laptop
I don't think anyone should paint with such broad strokes...the very reason I started the Bond on a Budget articles is so NO ONE would be left out of feeling like Bond or dressing like him etc...

Quite, and sometimes the budget alternatives are the best for wearing everyday. I don't have any Lobb boots for example. Got mine from cheap and cheerful Charles Tyrwhitt. Pea-Coat from Army & Navy stores. Linen suits from Next etc etc {[]
I did not specifically say people on this thread ASp. But on many other threads throughout this board, it is heavily and blatantly implied that people look down upon anything other then the actual product and poo poo certain replicas. None of my points are made up, these things are on here. I think it is more of a denial on yous and others part. Just watch who gets upset and posts because they feel they are being attacked because they know are guilty of this.

But does that not include me? I have been the most vocal on this since you posted your rebuke.
I make no apologies for what I buy, I do it for my pleasure, no one elses. Only two people on here know the extent of my collection, and I've never implied to what extent it may be on these, or any other boards.

I actually think you are reasonable most of the time. You are the one trying to prove a point and make an argument and have been in it since the beginning, so no I would not count you as someone posting because they feel they are taking a hit because deep down inside they know they are culprits of taking the higher road.
I must disagree with you about it being one mans fabric. Shouldn't anyone be able to buy it? Is he sole owner of the all that particular fabric in the world? He is adamant about no one else finding out where the fabric is available, even after this whole this thing is in production. Who is he to tell someone they can't buy something? He did not make the fabric. What is the big deal if he tells someone where to buy the fabric? Isn't the purpose of this board to help out Bond fans and collectors? If he didn't want any competition, he should have just bought enough fabric for himself to make his own shirt and then everyone else can do what they want instead of hording it like a greedy kid on the playground. I am not saying to change the price. He wont even say where he got the fabric or offer to sell a couple yards. Thats beyond absurd to me. Again, when you take on a project, there will always be competition or people trying to one up you, so he shouldnt have taken this on if he didnt want to deal with this. So given that I cant afford the shirt and accept that, I am also prevented from buying 2 measly yards to have a shirt made by a tailor of my choice for myself because someone is completely paranoid and wants to change the rules of business.

They are $400 and will be available early August.

And half of the screen ones were absolutely wrecked. If that on it's own doesn't make them desirable, I'll eat my laptop
And that goes for the OP Airmans too.
Quite, and sometimes the budget alternatives are the best for wearing everyday. I don't have any Lobb boots for example. Got mine from cheap and cheerful Charles Tyrwhitt. Pea-Coat from Army & Navy stores. Linen suits from Next etc etc {[]
Actually, yes he is. I hope that may explain things a little more.
