No one's gonna give me an "I told you so" now that I watched & liked AVTAK-?
No problem- "I told you so!" {[]
Great score, good villain, ol'Rog as charming as only he can be. It did have an "end of an era" feel, even on first watching, and it is definitely not the best Bond film (or even the best Moore film) but it has many strong points!
Moore is still feeling his way in TMWTGG (I cite the scene where he slaps Maud Adams vs "forever hold your piece" as evidence: he's clearly uncomfortable in the first whilst totally in command in the second) and hasn't settled into the role as he would in TSWLM. Guy Hamilton takes things a little too easily, John Barry is at his weakest (though that is still good), but there's plenty of colour and quirkiness with Nick Nack and Hai Fat. Too much silliness (the kung fu girls, the infamous slide whistle) of course.
The film's crowning glory is Sir Christopher Lee, the man born to play a Bond villain- although not necessarily in this film. He compensates for a lot of its weaknesses by his presence, image and charisma.
M and Q get some wonderful moments (and Bernard Lee and Desmond Llewelyn make the most of them).
^ Grace Jones certainly adds a level of intrigue to the film. Apparently she was difficult on set, and there are scenes where she's just a bit out of place. I think she's great on the blimp - "This way..." and I really like the way they come together at the end and help each other, it's actually quite sad that she dies.
I've always had a soft spot for AVTAK, I like its relatively simple premise. The plot is big in its final idea, but it never really gets close to that happening - so if anything, the film is quite basic, and it works.
I think the PTS is quite solid too, I love the ending to it with Roger and that hot 80s chick in the boat - there's also nothing better than that OO7 reveal in the clevage! :x
"Oooh, Commander Bond!" "Call me James, it's five days to Alaska"
I'm sure with it being Sir Rogers last movie, they just threw in as many double entendres as they could;
James Bond: Well my dear, I take it you spend quite a lot of time in the saddle.
Jenny Flex: Yes, I love an early morning ride.
Bond: Well, I'm an early riser myself.
Max Zorin: [the morning after Bond sleeps with May Day] You slept well?
James Bond: A little restless but I got off eventually.
Jenny Flex: Welcome, sir. I'm Jenny Flex.
James Bond: Of course you are.
Pola Ivanova: That feels wonderful!
Bond: Feels even better from where I'm sitting. Would you like it harder?
Pola Ivanova: James, you haven't changed!

Just seen these posts. Delighted that you now like AVTAK... and add me to the list of people who "told you so"
It has it's flaws, but they are not enough to ruin or even blemish the film for me. My biggest criticism is California Girls, but that was just one short moment.
Just out of interest - when did you last watch AVTAK before recently?

When it came out for rental at Blockbuster circa 1986... this is only the third time I've seen it. Now I'll revisit it as often as I do OP. Man, I really let that 'California Girls' insert get to me back then, eh?

Wow, 1986... I would have been 1 year old. Such a long time ago
I'm glad I bought it at a local store on impulse. Funny thing- last year I saw an episode of Mythbusters where they did the 'car in half' gag for real to see if it could be done & it worked. )
I also noticed that a lot of the camerawork was REALLY good in it... although some of the rear projections were a bit dodgy- but that just made it feel a bit 60's!
AVTAK has always been appreciated by myself because for some reason it stood out when I did the first-original-never-seen-old-Bond marathon. To me, that's pretty special. {[]
I've always liked it. But the problem I have with many of the old Bond films, including this one, is the pacing. AVTAK looks a bit cheap too compared to the other Glen's (all of which I like)
I watched it again only the other day as I'm getting a room ready
to be my "Bond Cave" and wanted to try out a new blu-ray player.
The picture quality is fantastic, helps spotting Actor/ stuntman )

To be honest ,with AVTAK you would need to be Mr Magoo to miss that

it is Sir Roger's swan song as 007.

But my favourite Moore will always be TMWTGG.

But I digress....
I was surprised at how much I enjoyed Grace's performance in AVTAK. She was almost as good as Walken IMO.
Hey- where's Jarvio? ?:)

I think Mark Gattis got AVTAK right. It works if you treat it as Rog looking back over his life

I do cringe when that comes on. But the movie itself I do enjoy.
"Greatness From Small Beginnings."
It's part of old school film-making. And to be fair, some of those stunts looked pretty painful!
