Was Bond meant to be dour?

Now for the itching question!!

It seems that we have a mix of comic Bonds and dour Bonds............was he meant to be dour?

    I suppose we're talking about movie Bond and in that case, no, he's not supposed to be dour and as 7289 said, he's supposed to be cool. With that said, I think Dalton was the only Bond who was dour, which was an experiment to go "literary," which was relatively dour. For the film format, particularly in the popular vein, "cool" was and is the legimate alternative to the novel Bond's dourness, though I personally love the books more that therefore allows me to enjoy the Dalton experiments.

    Good point, and I think that's why I really don't feel that Dalton represented Fleming's Bond all that well...Dalton was dour, Fleming not.
