    yes! so very true!

i lean toward a more conservative 4 in hand. although i'd like to wear a double windsor, but its far too 'crazy' a knot

Almost certainly the bracelet, ugh, like something out of Paris in the time before the Revolution.

Blokes like me would get it all sweaty and horrible before lunchtime too.

The watch bracelet my dear Bondtoys. Would never doubt your competences :))

It just looks wrong on a man. Very feminine.

Except this is NOT the latest trend in Milano at ALL. And that is a vulgar, tacky man wearing that, certainly not a style icon. I can assure you this trend does NOT exist here. And since my friends are all in Milan, and I basically only go out in Milan, to the nice posh places, I really do know what I'm talking about. :D

Merry Christmas to you and your lovely wife! But I didn't mean to offend or anything, just to state the fact that that "THING" isn't a trend in Milan and that dude REALLY is a prototype of tacky (jacket included) here! :)) Anyway hope everyone enjoys! :D

    Alessandra,

How is our gorgeous italian venus doing?!

phew, i was glad you did NOT agree with that watch slash hankerchief bracelet thing...(if you had, imagine our cummulative brain circuitry meltdown!) :s

now, what with the difference in customs and so on...
when is it appropiate to complement an Italian lady on her looks or attire? and should it be direct or subtle? when is it a total NO NO to compliment?

again, your expertise is invaluable!! chao bella!

Showed my wife some recent shots of Cavill whom I positioned as ' the choice that was not made' she looked genuinely crestfallen.

Your wife clearly has good taste in men (see what I did there? :)) ) I'm glad I'm not the only one feeling like that, especially now. I still think that regardless of Superman he can be the next Bond once Craig is done. Many young actors handle multiple franchises now, so... and he truly is perfect for the role. (and he'll be the perfect age for a good investment that lasts a few years/movies once Craig is done).
    Alessandra,

That was awful and the man in his entirety was terribly tacky. Trust me, not anything that stylish people here would wear :)) but it's so full of tacky wannabes these days I'm not surprised someone was going around wearing that thing. :s

:D it is indeed ciao but it's the thought that matters :D And I am not a Venus but I'll be MORE than glad to be the Starbuck to my great Apollo (for those who never saw Battlestar Galactica... never mind :)) For my Bond girls here who may not have seen him Apollo was played by Jamie Bamber. Swoon.)

LOL you truly are a gentleman and you're making a basic mistake... putting the words "appropriate" and "compliment" in the same sentence when Italians are concerned :)) Appropriate to compliment a lady on her looks or attire here is anytime anywhere :)) (unless her jealous husband or boyfriend is around! :)) ) It's just all in the wording. If you are a gentleman (which you are) and compliment her politely you'll always get a smile back and a thank you. Or, in most cases anyway. Subtle is always the best way, but if it's, I don't know, a really nice dress you can just directly say "I love your dress" and nobody will take offense, trust me.

My Bloomberg colleagues from the US back in the day were always saying "God bless Europe/Italians" seeing how we complimented each other and hugged each other and stuff at the office, without any problem whatsoever. :)) I even got a major compliment from the Bloomberg CEO on my fuchsia silk sandals that I was wearing the day he came to visit the Milan office... I KNEW he would love them, it was no coincidence I was wearing them. :v He was very fashion-conscious. And British, so way cheekier than his American counterparts :)).

    Alessandra,

intelligent, beautiful, successful, woman = venus!

so yes, you do certaintly qualify!

i agree with you on Henry, one day he could make a very good Bond. the juxtoposition of youth with experience isnt quite there yet. he's basically ALL youth and energy (hence Superman) at this point.

Thanks for the pointers! wow, our very own 'advisor' on issues of style and sophistication, what a priviledge!

at a wedding this past weekend i bumped into an older friend and his wife. she is of course, italian (rome), she was wearing a most attractive little black dress with tiny shoulder straps and these gorgeous heels. although in her 50's she was most absolutely HOT!!

well of course i couldnt contain myself and i came up close to her gave her a hello kiss and told her that i had never seen her look so elegant.
and then she did something very strange...

she looked at me straight in the eye, didnt smile or say anything, then just walked away. after the initial confusion i though 'oh s#$!, did i cross the line??'

so its been bugging me since, but i immediately thought about consulting you :D in an effort to understand what the hell happened?? ? ?:)

so..how did the CEO compliment you? ciao!
  • HigginsHiggins GermanyPosts: 16,619MI6 Agent
:)) hehe, you basically told her, that in all the other days in the past, she was looking like Nap Plural in his Man U sweater and flipflops :D

glad, that "The gorgeous italian Venus" agrees with me :D

@Halcon: If you are complimenting a woman, never, I mean NEVER compare her present look with somthing from the past.

    It's like throwing sh.t into a fan !

Your compliment would have been much more effective, if you would have told her, that she's probably the most elegant woman in the room/house/building.
Or to modifiy your compliment, tell her, that you did not find any woman on the party, that was as elegant as her.

Things get much easier, when you are married: I am always managing a smile on my wife's face when I tell her: "You're not that ugly today" ;)
