Classic 1960's He-Man Film Debate

DrMaybeDrMaybe Posts: 204MI6 Agent
There were, basically, 3 types of iconic male heroes, thruout the 60's(and beyond), in film.

The Secret Agent

The Cowboy

The Urban Detective/Cop/Gangster

Most of the actors who played these roles best, also made excursions into the other 2 genres.

Connery(Shalako, The Anderson Tapes), Eastwood(Dirty Harry, The Eiger Sanction), Wayne(McQ), McQueen(Magnificent Seven, Nevada Smith), Bronson(Once Upon a Time in the West, Telefon), Coburn(Duck You Sucker, Harry in Your Pocket), Marvin(Prime Cut).

My questions to you-

Which of these genres do you think has survived the best over the years - westerns (naysayers- don't be quick to draw your guns. They may be on the return with films like 3:10 to Yuma, No Country for Old Men and There Will Be Blood doing good, both critically and financially, last year), the crime/detective or spy genre? Which actors(feel free to list others I may have omitted) do you think were capable of performing in all 3 genres? Which of the genres will survive the current onslaught of comic/FX driven films? Which genres will you gladly see pass into history?
