Wow, who'd have thought that Switzerland would beat Spain? :o

that was my exact face after the game yesterday haha

the US. v. Slovenia game is on now...the ref is handing out yellow cards left and right...like they're candy or something. And he called a handball when it rather obviously only hit the player's face... :s

Slovenia is putting the hurt on my boys.

Oh, and I've joined the "I hate the new ball" club. that thing is flying willy nilly all over the field. 8-)

If, God forbid, we lose on Friday (not likely but possible) and England beat Algeria (virtual certainty), then we are looking at a scenario where in the third game England and Slovenia play footsie in the center circle for 90 minutes to ensure both go through.
I never should have written this. Halfway through, God is not forbidding, as we are down 2-0. Now, I must pray for England to somehow lose to or tie Algeria (yeah, right). X-(

the ref of the US v Slovenia game is calling this REALLY badly. did anyone SEE his last call? there was NO OFFSIDES...that last goal for the US should have counted...he's not calling fairly X-(

Yes, we got screwed. But the team need to get over it and look forward. Bottom line, if we beat Algeria by 2 or more goals on Wednesday, we go through, no matter what else happens.

    What an amazing game.

Well done to the USA and Slovenia. Both teams deserve to go through.
Hopefully at the expense of those moaning prima donnas who think turning up should be enough.

Anyway, England last night. P!ss poor. Probably the worst England performance I've ever seen.

    abuse1.jpg

Well, save Lynddie England of course. :D

Just dreadful, I don't know what's going on there. It seems like the wheels came off England's vehicle some time ago, in fact when John Terry got sacked as captain. Since then we've looked at a succession of problems in personal life (Ashley Cole), injuries (Beckham and Ferdinand), lack of matchfitness thanks to recent injuries (Rooney, Barry), underperforming (most of the others). Throw in a dodgy ball they haven't seen fit to practise with and newcomer Jamie Carragher, who played no part in their successful qualification but now is in every game, and only bringing on Crouch 10 mins before the end and Joe Cole never ( :o ) and you have a manager who seems to have lost the plot. The only saving grace, so to speak, was David James who had to maintain focus and though I would have gone with Green again, it's got to be said, I think it could have been disaster with him again.

Then again, remember what happened the last time and England team were driven by an Italian coach in a football tournament....

Certainly rough stuff for England...I am assuming they will handle Slovenia, but to keep things interesting I hope they won't. On the other hand I do indeed hope that the US can act like a football team and beat Algeria next week.

In other WC news, it looks like the Dutch and the Argentinians are the strongest right now, with Brazil not far behind.

England, France, Germany, Spain and Italy are all hurting currently with some serious issues to get over if they expect to a) advance and b) win the thing.

My prediction is that Spain will wake up and do well getting through to the semi-finals and possibly the finals, but Argentina is my favorite to win the cup in the end.

I think Englands problem is that Capello is picking what he thinks are the 4 best midfield players and hoping it will work, rather that picking a balanced midfield. By putting Gerrard on the left he is destroying the flow of the team. Gerrard is the player who will create things for the team from the central areas. If 442 is the formation then we need Joe Cole or
Milner on the left, Gerrard in the middle and on the ball and Lampard on the bench. I just hope Capelo isn't stubborn and will concede he needs to change his system.

Rooney is struggling as he is getting no service, there is no link between the midfield and the forwards which is why we are seeing the long balls.

Like at Liverpool, England are rather reliant on Gerrard being the creative force playing him on the left is a recipe for failure.

When is Scotland's first game? I haven't seen them play yet! :))

This World Cup is being notable for all the wrong reasons... the Mandela family tragedy, the dodgy ball, mutiny in the French team, some poor so-and-so being arrested for finding his way into the England dressing room (FIFA trying to find a scapegoat for its own security bungling), FIFA acting the bully and ripping off locals, that awful horn of Africa marring every game...

As for Capello, he's revived England's favourite sport: bitching and moaning about the England team and how you could do better...

No....I think the fact that's it's England vs Germany will focus and concentrate the players minds better....I hope it forces them to 'step-up' their game somewhat....

Also, England would be favourites to beat Ghana....no such pressure when we play Germany :D I just hope it doesn't go to penalties :# :))

There kind of was Loeffs, the US had another good goal disallowed. As for the English well, for you Englanders, Ze Vurld cup is over. :v Penalties or total destruction. I am happy with either. Wonder where I can buy a retro 1974 German kit. That's one cool outfit.

I personally think Germany vs England is a WASTE at this point of the competition. Ugh. That should be a quartefinal at the VERY least. It can be a final or semi-final too. For them to play now, we will lose one good team for no good reason :(

And I say this against my own interest, since it eliminates a strong opponent. Not that Italy looks like the team can do much :)) Not without quality players, and there's none -- other than Zambrotta and Montolivo -- since Buffon is injured, so we're basically toast. I am just praying the Gods that Pirlo miraculously recovers, and for some astral special conjunction to make us go through :)) Thing is when there aren't good players because they're either too young or too old to play... nothing one can do :)) Lippi is awesome, but he can't "get blood from cucumbers" as we say in Italian (as in can't get quality where there's none!).

I am relieved England went through, mainly for Capello :)) And for Frank Lampard, whom I really always liked. As a player and as a person.
"Are we on coms?" (if you don't know where this is from... you've missed some really good stuff! :D)

You can take the mickey out of the English all day long. But we can't take the mickey out of the Scots. That would be just mean.

I can't watch the video at the moment, I'm in the Filmhouse at the EIFF. Dunno if you've heard about the ABE t-shirts (Anyone But England) they sell up here. Some folks took the huff and got all David Baddiel about it, while more noble English fans responded with their own shirts which changed SNP to mean (Scotland's Not Playing). That's how it should be. Two sets of fans winding each other up. That's what football means to me. It's just a pity we don't get to do it on the World Stage anymore. :#
