Roger Moore: "I'm the worst Bond, apparently."

Roger Moore had this to say recently during an interview with Bryony Gordon of the Daily Telegraph:
"I'm the worst Bond, according to the internet. Generally hated! I was too funny, too light. Didn't take it seriously enough. Well, I mean, this is a man who is supposed to be a spy. And yet he turns up in bars and hotels around the world, and everyone says, 'Ah, Mr Bond, we've been expecting you.' Everybody knows who he is and what he wants to drink. It's the same with the Bond girls. All the new ones say, 'Oh, I'm going to be different from the others', but before long it's always the same - 'Oh, James!'"
In light of the endless comparisons to Sean Connery, Sir Roger once again appears unfazed, admitting that "the important thing to me is: 'Did I get the cheque?' I did, and they keep coming. The residuals are quite handsome!"
Now see what you all have done? :v
Oh well, unpopular as you may be Sir Roger, there are still a few nutters out there, like myself, who consider you the best!

I'm not a fan of all of Sir Roger's Bond movies--but I'd be a liar if I didn't admit to having enjoyed nearly all of them.And I've always appreciated Sir Roger.:)

Quite so. I love Roger Moore. Nevermind that he was my least favourite James Bond. I enjoyed all of his Bond films, to one degree or another, and there's absolutely no doubt that he kept the franchise alive in the Seventies and Eighties.

Sir Roger Moore is one of my favourite Bond's, He starred in my favourite film TSWLM. He is IMO a very good Bond. I would die to meet him.
He seems a very nice guy with all his work with Unicef. I am a member of his offical website. I have all his Bond films and his signed autobiography. He is one of my best Bonds.
Does this mean that Roger Moore goes on the internet and looks at things like this then ?
Who else would of done Bond in the 70's?
I simply can't accept the premise of "worst Bond." For instance, I love pizza. When I rank the different kinds of pizza I've had in my life, on two different continents, I don't rank in terms of 'best' to 'worst.' I tend to think in terms of 'favourite' and 'least favourite.' When I have a piece of my least favourite...it's still pizza---and I love pizza.
But Bond isn't exactly like pizza, so...although I do think there is a Best Bond (Connery)...and a Best Bond Since ConneryTM...there is no 'Worst Bond.' Only a 'least favourite.'

But he seems to be a really great, genuine, and likable person, a national British treasure akin to other camp 1960s icons like William Shatner and Adam West, and is not a obnoxious ******* like the grumpy Sean Connery (hypocrite, no variety to his acting) and that psychopath George Lazernby (suspected of violent domestic abuse, verbally bullied Pierce Brosnan).
Moore looked just as iconic on the posters, but quite a different lookng guy to the other two. That 'long face' look (not sure how else to describe it) was followed on by Dalton and Brosnan. Obviously the humour was key to those particular films. Some of Moore's style is very camp today, but that was fashionable in that decade and not associated with homosexuality either. Also, Moore looks quite old compared to the Jason Bourne types today, even from this third film onwards. Still, Connery and Moore's films are in the same bracket for me: larger-than-life, unpretentious escapist entertainment.

Sir Roger was my Bond growing up and he introduced me to a world that has given me countless hours of pleasure and entertainment.
Whilst I agree all his films may not work today they were certainly relevant and in tune with the time.
I've become very protective of the Moore era and Sir Rog has always ben a true gent.
And really, Roger is given too much guff. He's been the silly Bond, but he's also twisted women's arms and shunted men off great heights. That's ruthless, right?
He may have made it his own, but I think he had to at the time and I'm damn grateful he did too!
I went to the Fleming tribute gig at the London Paladium last Sunday, Rog is just so damn casual with the adoration he receives yet you know he just loves it!
If only that man could live forever!

We salute you, Roger Moore! Thanks for your irreplaceable contribution.
Of my Top 10 007 films only two or three of his movies are up there but he will always be my favorite Bond. His approach may not have been the best in many people's eyes but he had the guts to try something different and make the role his own to escape Connery's shadows.
I am a historian, and when I look at my favorite times in history I especailly enjoy looking at the most influential and pivotal moments in the history of something whether it be the rise of a great nation like America or even a film franchise. Sir Roger took on the role after Connery left EON for good and Lazenby failed to become popular and, therefore, had quite a weight on his shoulders. He had to bring James Bond into a whole new decade with a whole new approach that was not only original and in tune with his talents but also one that fit the culture of the times. Had he not done this so well we would NOT have Bond films to this day. So when it comes to the most influential and pivotal actor in regard to this awesome franchise's longevity Sir Roger Moore is without question the most important figure.
I hope Sir Roger is around for many more years to continue enjoying his golden years with his residual checks. I am confident he will continue to have something to say about the world of James Bond from time to time. I hope the gift of his suave, sophisticated and classy personality will be around for the world to enjoy for as long as possible.
