Quantum of solace was on channel five recently.
I have to say I’m re-evaluating this film Up now.
some of the sequences are totally outstandingly conceived shot, and executed with an incredible eye for visual composition,
It will never be my favourite , due to its violent tonality and lack of hummer,
But it gets better every time I watch it.

I've come to the conclusion that QOS IS a better film than I first thought. ;)

:)) Now I didn't say it had made my top five. ;)
But it was undeserving of some of the bile I directed at it. :D

Not in my top five either, but it's my go-to Bond movie for a quick shot of Doubleohdreneline. :))

Main issue with QoS other than it not being entertaining & druglike sleep inducing..was that its a crap revenge movie. LTK was a great revenge movie DAF was not. The movie starts and nothing happens to Mr. White that we see..the guy that fooled Vesper making her look like a stupid easily tricked woman is just arrested...and Quantum is introduced and he gets no revenge other than for Fields who we had no time to even know. I always care about what happens in a Bond film...I didn't care in this one.

But it's not a revenge movie. The revenge plot is misdirection. It's the temptation Bond has to overcome on his way to becoming the professional M wants him to be. I actually believe him when he tells M "I never left".

It's taken many years and many, many viewings but I've come to really like QOS. After years of
Ranting here :)) . Although I put the reason down to going back and reading the Fleming novels.
Which was what many had suggested I should do at the time ( but I knew better ) :D . When I
think of the arguments I had with other members, I feel somewhat foolish, So my advice to anyone
Is get back to the books and forget what the movies have taught you about Bond, the real Bond
character is there in the pages of those fantastic stories.
Hence why QOS has gradually climbed up my list of favourite Bond films, because from going back
and reading the Books. I can see that Daniel Craig is playing Bond as close as any actor so far has gotten.
Timothy Dalton and Sean Connery are great but for me Craig has captured the rawness of the " blunt
    instrument " of Fleming's Bond.
This month I'm reading FYEO, already read the first three stories and I can easily picture Craig as the
hardened naval officer, especially in FYEO, with Bond in camouflage tracking through the woods to
    Assassinate a Cuban mobster.
So my new review of QOS is that apart from a few " movie making " styles that wouldn't be my first
    Choice. It's a great stab at a modern,contemporary take on a much loved hero. -{

Watched it yet again last night. Quantum of Solace is a solidly good movie, but sandwiched between CR and SF, “good” seems disappointing. It’s disappointing mainly because it has all the ingredients to be great. To me, it suffers for two reasons: 1) the writers’ strike forced production to start with a first draft of the script, and it feels like it; the script needs to be fleshed out, the story better developed, the pathos of the villains better explored. And 2) Marc Forster for some reason decided this movie needed to be edited like a Bourne film, so all the action setpieces look like they’re put through a blender. That’s too bad because there is some GREAT action underneath; if only it were re-edited (perhaps by Stuart Baird?) it would be so much better.

QoS is a solid 3 stars out of four, whereas CR and SF are both 4 stars (in my opinion). It’s just a shame to me that QoS could have easily been 3 ½ or 4 if the script had more time to develop and the action weren’t chopped to shreds.

My day off today, so I just watched QOS. Holy crap, every single time I watch this movie I like it better than the last time. Wherever I had it on my list it has just moved up (again). This is so my favourite Bond of this century. I don't even notice the shaky-cam any more because I know just what I want to look at by now. Damn I love this flick.

My thoughts. I watched it recently and liked it.

It did face the big challenge of coming after Casino Royale (2006), which had set high expectations for fans.

Many people rank Quantum of Solace as one of the worst films in the series. It may not reach the heights that many of the other films in the series have, but I wouldn't call it a bad film by any means. I was expecting the movie, based on a lot of the criticism, to be bad but I enjoyed it in my first viewing.

It lacks gadgets. Greene (the villain) is a normal person who lacks eccentricies. It is a revenge story, but despite Bond's personal agenda, I'd still say it was more than just a personal vendetta. QoS handled complex themes such as Latin American politics, corruption, monopolies and the concept of being a lesser evil in foreign policy.

Maybe it didn't handle these ideas as profoundly as it wanted to, but I give it props for trying. The fast-paced editing with constant changes of camera angles for action scenes made me a little dizzy sometimes.

QoS may not be the greatest film in the series, but I don't hate it either. It has its merits. If there are ~20 better movies in the franchise than QoS, then James Bond is a really good franchise!

It lacks the depth of CR. The theme song is terrible*. The villain is weak, his henchman even more so. The editing is distracting and unclear.

I love it and have enjoyed watching it maybe 20 times. :D It has many strengths but that's not the point being addressed here.

And that's the issue right there.

Royale came after Die Another Day, surpassing low standards.

Quantum came after Royale, failing to meet such high standards.

Skyfall came after Quantum, easily passing over the hate.

I'm curious as to what makes the film bad.

And that's the question being answered.

QoS is CR's coda....for me they are part of the same film....and I still struggle to understand why people dislike the theme tune...it's one of the best of the entire series...

After many years and many viewings, I too have come to that
Conclusion. ( took me a bit longer, as I'm a bit thick) :))
As many members tried to explain it to me. Over months. :D
Except for the theme tune which isn't the best, although fun
    To listen to while driving.

I give it props for uniqueness. It has elements of rock, R&B and a rap-like flow, with a minimalist but still distinct instrumental. If I had to rank the Bond themes in categories, it would rank very high in the "willingness to take risks" category.

And this is probably the problem some people have with it. They're used to Bond themes being soulful, like Skyfall or Goldfinger that they tend to be closed-minded toward things that have a little more dissonance.

closed-minded toward things that have a little more dissonance

That's precisely my problem with the theme song. It's all dissonance and no melody. Call me old-fashioned (everybody else around here does!), but I like a song where the voices and instruments blend together to create a memorable melody that one can follow. "Another Way to Die" doesn't fill the bill for me. This coming from someone who actually likes Madonna's theme for Die Another Day, so go figure! :))

As I said before: is that the only explanation you can think of?
People who do not share your opinion, be it of Sean Connery or "Another Way To Die" have closed minds?
Please, try and see that there are other possible explanations for people's choices and preferences.
