    No doubt they are standing in a queue.

    I wonder what the turnout would be in British general elections if we had to stand in line for roughly four hours?

    Regardless of anything else, it is great to see people enthused by the democratic process, much as the French were in their Ségo-Sarko presidential contest last year.

    That's not so good! What I meant was that it is quite incredible to see people being willing to stand for hours to vote, and I think the prospect of doing so in Great Britain would discourage rather a lot of people from voting!

    I don't want to get into a political discussion, for obvious reasons, although it will be interesting to see if the polls have been an accurate reflection of the state of the contest and the apparent desire for change. But most importantly (for an outside observer) is the fact that this election seems to have galvanised previously non-voters to participate in the democratic process and to engage with the future of their country. In a sense this has been an educational experience for some, if one news item is anything to go by where a self-described 'redneck' had read up on all the policies and electoral promises of each side and was campaigning for a particular candidate accordingly.

    If only some British voters would do the same!

    I love election day. I'll come home later and watch the results come in. National election results and some local measure really have me interested in results. This is indeed a historic day for us in the United States.

    I voted rather quickly, maybe 15 minutes tops. The election offical said turnout in this area was about 90%, way above average. I appreciate the nice comments from the other side of the pond.

    That's dedication for you. I suppose we Brits queued up when the Queen Mother was in state. Or when Westlife release a new album. Still, once every four years. Can't you guys postal vote? What about the elderly and infirm?

    Absentee voting is allowed for the elderly, sick and whatever other good reason you can come up with. Some states offered early voting, where you can go to a few select locations and vote a week or two before the "official" day. These locations, because they were limited, were swamped by people trying to beat the rush and actually ended up with long lines. I believe the State of Oregon is strictly mail voting, which I find strange.

    I just went to my polling place at the local school, showed my ID, waited in a short line and voted on a touch screen, which I found quite easy to navigate. Besides President, we had a Senate race, Congressional race, local state races and a few referendrums where you vote yes or no on various issues. Actual voting time was less than 10 minutes.

    Well...it looks to have been a largely clean election---thank God for that---except for a couple of isolated incidents, including one where a pair of Black Panthers stood outside a polling place with billy clubs.

    The system still works; the people have decided. Utopia may now commence without further impediment.

    In all sincerity, it's a remarkable moment in the history of the United States of America---and the world, because this affects everyone on the planet to one degree or another, in ways we can't even imagine quite yet.*

    My congratulations to Barack Obama and his supporters. He is a preternaturally effective politician who ran a brilliant campaign in a tumultuously timely moment in history. May he use his new power wisely.

    Yeah...I read the Playboy interview ;) He was Hollywood's boy, for sure...so no ugly politics at the Oscars for at least four years! :)) Nothing but nirvana and bliss :x

    Yes, indeed. The most recent figures have the Democrats winning 54 seats and it has been strongly suggested that while they may get 58, they will struggle to get to 60.

    He was my guy and I couldn't be happier! I waited a very long time for change, and I am hopeful things will be better. To see so many first time voters so engaged in the process and feeling like they are finally being heard is a wonderful thing to see. A moment in history for sure.

    Monique, I couldn't have more respect for your opinions, but I just want to say that I'm a little sick of this "historic moment" garbage that I keep hearing. Every presidential election is an historic moment, and it is a bit too "affirmative action" for my tastes if we keep trumpeting this as being an historic moment. I hope America voted for him because they believe his policies to be better, vs. their hope to be part of a "moment in history."

    What was the recent "floor" supposed to be? 150, 120k a year? Let's definitely keep track of where that moves.

    But enough of that. I've always found that my political writing gets much better (and tends to get published!) when my party's out of power :v Not that I'll subject anyone to it here...you all know how I feel about politics on AJB...so sorry about this. But it's a moment worthy of recognition.

    I knew this thread was a mistake. Nightshooter, you are very young, you have no concept how historic a moment electing an African American President is. I never thought in my lifetime I would see it. I think it really sad that you don't realize what that means for so many people. It is about change.. for the better.

    I'm done talking politics here. I never should have in the first place. I was so excited with the outcome, I couldn't help it. But I am not going to let anyone dampen my spirits. I'm going over to Loeff's to bring him a beer to cheer him up.

    Congratulations to Obama. Like Leoff, Mr. Obama was not my choice. I'm curious to see how well he performs. His mantra of 'change' is nice, but unfortunately he had no legislative record to back it up with. In his acceptance speech, he already began hedging his bets, saying that what he wants probably can't be done in one term. I hate to say it, but nobody's promised a second term. Obama ran a great campaign and got a lot of people enthusiastic about the election process, but if he doesn't adequately deliver 'the goods' in the next two years, before congressional elections in 2010, I fear there will be a lot of young new supporters whose misgivings about politics will be confirmed.
