I am very interested to hear which you guys thought was the better film and how you would rate and compare each.

CR hands down. Far better directed, with a better script (which was fairly faithful to Fleming) and actors.

As good as each other. Both very different and both with their good and bad points.

    CR better, but only just.
Wasn't sure what to expect with CR, so the element of surprise for DCs Bond made it more spectacular. We've seen that now, so QoS was never going to be as good for me, however I thought it was far better than I thought it was going to be.

If CR set the measure at 10/10, then QoS was a close 9/10.

But where, pray, is your QoS review in full, SW?

BTW are you ignoring me 'cos I slated the film!? :D

I agree with Strangeways. I prefered CR for the script, and the love story (call me a romantic ;% ) however I thought QoS was great, but very different. (I would like to have seen more dialog between Camille and Bond....but you can't have everything...:D ) But I give the rating the same.

Wow. I thought that this thread was going to be full of people ranting about jerky cameras and under-developed plots, but it isn't!

Though Casino Royale is probably better, QoS is still great!

For me it has to be QOS mainly due to Marc Forster's skill as a director. I've said it many times before, but I find the whole film simply stunning, a magnificent piece of cinematography.
    But that's my opinion.

CR wins hands down for me every time, the thrill of the reboot and my love of poker were both big plus points!

QoS is a faster film in terms of the plot, the action and the script and I liked that as a big change to CR. They're just so different to each other they're quite difficult to compare I think.

I'm glad also to see on here that people are not just trashing the movie. I can't wait to see it tomorrow and the comments on here are encouraging. It's hard to beat a movie like CR, and you can't "match" a movie like that. As stated and I'm sure I'll agree after watching it that if you take QOS for what it is...it is a good movie. And I'm glad since I'm going to see it tomorrow....FINALLY!!!!

Casino Royale is the better film...it has Eva Green in it for a start :D

CR oozes class throughout...but it's the script that really shines here (as does DC ), it's also a great love story (but don't tell anyone I said that, I can't have my reputation sullied ;) )...

QoS is a great Bond film..but a couple of notches behind CR...I love the last frame of the film in particular...

I liked the bare-knuckled (and surprisingly plotted, at least for me) storytelling of QOS a tad bit better than the more nostalgic sweep of CR. But agree with others, both are so very different yet also very very good: QOS is the ying to CR's yang, or something like that. {:)

Casino Royale for the story, music and everything really. Quantum of Solace I think was just one notch under CR in terms of story and music.

Casino Royale overall is better, but except for the herky-jerky editing (and what are probably missing scenes chopped out of the film to keep the pace too brisk), Quantum of Solace is not far behind. There are two very different styles of filmmaking going on, too, with Martin Campbell more or less following traditional film techniques and Marc Forster bringing more of an "indie" quality to Quantum of Solace. I'm okay with both, though I lean toward traditional for most things, especially since, in my opinion, it's harder to conceal bad performances and production values using the traditional approach than the quick-cut, handheld closeup approach that is favored in a lot of cheaper and non-"Hollywood" films.

    CR vs QOS

    The PTS
Much better in CR, one of the best PTS in the series
    1:0

    The Titles
CR had better titles and a much better song
    2:0

    The Action
I don't actually mind CR's action scenes. As for QOS's action there was a little too much and it was badly edited
    2:1

    The Score
    Both fantastic
    3:2

    The Girls
I like Camille better than Vesper, she was more attractive and one of the most interesting Bond girls in a while.
    3:3

    The Villains
Mr. White was more mysterious in CR than in QOS. Le Chiffre is much better than Dominic Green. The henchmen were equally pointless in both.
    4:3

    The Allies
Mathis was good in CR, but more interesting in QOS.
    4:4

    The Staff
M was a pointless character in CR, I hated the fact that Bond was able to break into her house.
    4:5

    The Plot
CR had an advantage: it had a novel to be basd on. Nevertheless, the screenwriters screwed up.
    4:6

    QOS wins!

Although I like them both, Casino Royale wins out for me.

To me CR feels like a solid novel and Quantum a great short story.

Casino Royale, hands down. I loved the style and pace of the movie. QoS was a bit too much, too fast IMHO

This is not much of a debate for me either --it's CR hands down. It not only wins in the obvious categories like aesthetics, credits, action scenes and title song ;), but also in plot and characterization. Much like its action shots, QoS was too rushed and disjointed to pack the big emotional punch the storyline needed, though it did get better towards the end. The main plot was underdeveloped (likely because the main villain was also) while the continuing arc/character development was constantly cut short by pointless action scenes serving to further the...main plot? 8-) Exactly.

CR far superior. CR is Bond reborn - QOS is Bond re-Bourne.

For me, CR was ruined by all that wretched psychoanalytical banter between Bond and Vesper. I never bought into it, or their relationship, and found it all clever for the sake of being clever. CR is also far too long a film with a middle act that really sags and an uninteresting third act with a tacked on action sequence. CR's action scenes all went on far too long and the whole thing really hasn't held up to repeated viewings.

I just got back from a second viewing of QoS and what it is marred somewhat by some poorly shot action scenes, it is a much better paced film that, given its running time, doesn't wear out its welcome. The characters are all far more engaging and it did a better job of holding my attention. The film is really single-minded in terms of advancing the plot and it manages to successfully juggle both the "A" story of Bond trying to foil Greene's plans with the "B" story of Bond coming to terms with conflicted feelings about his relationship with Vesper.

So for me, the winner is QoS by a very comfortable margin.

    CR, hands down.

I doubt anything will ever top CR, easily the best Bond film in the franchise.....by miles.

Well put. I'm more comfortable with CR's dramatic scenes than you are I suppose, but agree on the overall: QOS is simply the better put together film and never lags. The first half of CR (up to Montenegro) feels like an overly long pre-credits scene at times. Appreciate the build, just wish it had been handled ala Forster/QOS (who knew EON could ever make such a Bond film? ;) ).

I just watched QoS for a second time and watched CR right before it. Although I went into watching QoS thinking that I would like it more than CR I think CR beats out QoS for me. I liked the story of CR more, the villian in CR more and Vesper - CR also made me feel it more.

I liked (aghast) QoS action sequences (especially the initial car chase and the final hotel scene...by far my favourite part), the relationship between Camille and Bond, the M and Bond banter and deepening relationship there and also the way Fields got killed. However, Greene did not quite do it for me and there seemed to be a lack of depth to QoS (when compared to CR)...idk, just something was missing.

For me, CR inches out QoS by just a wee bit. They were both great films that I thoroughly enjoyed and will watch over and over again. Thank you Eon and thanks DC, you've made me happy yet again. I have no room to complain.

We felt Bond was in danger during CR, we felt his pain. Bond passes out after the car crash, drinks large mouthfulls of whisky to dumb the pain after a horrific fight while staring at himself in the mirror, ends up bed-ridden in hospital after a torture scene, is poisoned and almost dies. For me, this is what turned the Bond franchise on its head. It was the first Bond film that attempted a decent shot at realism, mainly in the second half of the movie.

Many here will scoff at CR having an attempt at being realistic, with the Madagascar scene and the Miami airport scene, yet even then, we saw Bond nervous before jumping off the crane. There was a sense of `will he, won't he' throughout CR. We were rooting for the new rookie Bond because of it.

I think QoS has lost some of that edge, by making Bond borderline super hero again in many parts of the film. I never once felt as though he was in danger, and I want to feel that when watching a Bond film, as this echoes the Fleming books perfectly.

I've never felt that sense of danger in hardly any of the Bond flicks, which is why CR is unique, and is ranked no.1 on my all-time favourite Bond flicks, by a long way, and no. 2 in my rankings is quite a way behind it.

Quantum of Solace is better IMO.

Casino Royale is big, big for Bond. I love it but I feel that its very much like an OHMSS, well the Tracy parts especially. It introduces Craig well and sets up the new tone.

QoS is big, but big in the right Bond sense. I have seen nothing like this from Bond before, maybe thats why I like it better. I found the experience far more Bond-like than CR, even though elements were missing.

I truely feel that the correct Bond has emerged from QoS (esp. the latter half) and it will make the experience far less disposable than some of the previous Bonds, Brosnan's come to mind here.

PTS and post credit chase: CR
    Plot: CR (But pretty shakey)
    Bond: QoS
    Girl: QoS
    Villian: CR
    Locations: QoS
    Soundtrack: QoS

    Ratings: QoS 4.5/5...CR 4/5
    1. TWINE 2. FYEO 3. MR 4. TLD 5. TSWLM 6. OHMSS 7. DN 8. OP 9. AVTAK 10. TMWTGG 11. QoS 12. GE 13. CR 14. TB 15. FRWL 16. TND 17. LTK 18. GF 19. SF 20. LaLD 21. YOLT 22. NTTD 23. DAD 24. DAF. 25. SP

I'm not trying to offend anyone by saying this but it is completely beyond my understanding why any fan of the Bond films, especially fans of Casino Royale, could possibly love Quantum Of Solace more or even as much as Casino Royale. Bond's character has been removed, the plot is terrible, there are too many completely unnecessary and ridiculous action sequences, and not enough character chemistry. QOS was an okay action movie but one of the biggest disappointments I've ever been subjected to.
