I ordered the Clifford James ones, but sent them back as the quality wasn't very good. Try these: http://theshopforshoes.com/shop/Classic_Boots.html
and have a look at the John White - Westbury chukkas. These are excellent and they have the same sole as the Church Ryders (I believe) very good boot and well made.

Try this link for a photo of the soles:

James Bond: Your contact? Not well.
Dryden: Made you feel it, did he? Well, you needn't worry. The second is...
    James Bond: Yes... considerably.

There are alternatives out there, many of them excellent. I must say though that the Church's Ryder III boots are such good quality they are worth the money. Yes they are a lot of money at £265 or therabouts, but you'll never look back.

+1, they are outstanding. I would never regret each single Euro I spent for them.

So you recommend these? Have you got a pair?

You guys should try herring shoes online. Look under their graduate line for the chukka. It's a very close replica for 99 pounds. It looks like the only difference is the lining.

I think they are saying to go just a short distance more and get the Churchs Ryder 3s...mine should be in any day now and I can't wait!

Yes, I bought a pair recently. They are good. Obviously if you have £250 spare, I would say go for the Churches, but if you are on a budget like me, go for the John Whites.

Just purchased the John White brown suede boots which are exact copies of the Church's Ryder III... it is not even a question of price as the two models are for all intent and purposes identical... good work for those who found them... I will post back when they arrive about the comfort but as I own other John Whites shoes I am positive they will be most comfortable... A great alternative indeed!

Im in for John White - I wear a size 11 in the US for a Johnston and Murphy boot. Do you know by any chance the correct size to order? I hate to send these overseas only to return them if they dont fit!

I picked these up at banana republic today and they are very comfortable:

I purchased the John White back in April after seeing a picture of D C wearing the boots which showed the sole. The boots at the time matched up with the John White. These boots are identical and at a fraction of the cost. They are hand made, great quality and fit superbly. Highly recomended.

Hey all. To those that bought the John Whites, would you say they are true to size? Also, is 11UK an 11.5US after size converion?

I got these on sale today at the Clark's store for $69. I know they're not the Church Ryder III but I thought the looked nice.

Someone wanted to know: Just got my John White boots and I have to return them as they are not true to size... at least for me and I seldom have to go a size up shoeswize. They look great but do not be surprised if they run a bit small. I hope the next size up will be ok for me otherwise I will have to get a refund and go with the Church's...

Thanks you two for the size info. I just went ahead and ordered a pair of Brown Suede Desert Boots by Clarks. Came out to $59 after the 30% discount at Endless. They are close enough I think.

Thanks for the heads-up on that. I was planning on getting the Clarks as well, and that 30% off is great. Plus free overnight shipping! :D

When the Bond bug got me years ago I went searching for a pair of chukka boots like Connery wore in Goldfinger. I found a great pair at Charles Tyrwitt. I've had them for over three years and am very pleased with them.
Bond: "But who would want to kill me, sir?"
M: "Jealous husbands, outraged chefs, humiliated tailors . . . the list is endless."

i took a look at the chukka boots at Target in person today (the ones Mantis refers to in his QOS on a budget article) and they look to be of terrible quality and have a very limited arch support (meaning they won't be very comfortable for most people). just wanted to let you guys know not to bother with them.

What do you guys think is a good size conversion for a US size 9.5? I'm thinking I should go with the 9, but I'm hearing conflicting things from you guys about the sizing.

Typically 9.5 US = 9 UK, but from what you guys are saying I may need to get an 8.5 UK. I sent the folks at walkerandgunn.com a message, but any more help here would be appreciated. My foot is exactly 9.5" long by the way.

By the way, I'm probably going to go for the John Whites if it wasn't apparent from my reference to walkerandgunn.com

Anywhere decent in Australia to get brown suede chukka boots?

I just purchased the Church's Robbie brown suede chukka boots from the Church's outlet in Hong Kong. These boots are identical to the Ryder III expect for the sole. The salesman said the Robbie is made in Italy vs England for the Ryder. They were 50% off. What a great steal at around 130 pounds. There's no discount for the Ryder the salesman told me and they had to be ordered if i wanted them. So i figured the Robbie was a great purchase.

I purchased my pair from "The Shop for Shoes". Mantis has a link a page or 2 back. It cost me $148 delivered to the US. Will give a heads up when I get it.

I'm also planning on getting the John White black oxfords there. Same size on those?

Who has the Clarks Desert boots, and how do you like them?
That's a Smith & Wesson, and you've had your six.

Just received mine today, and they're great so far. The main differences from the Churchs as far as I can tell are that the Clarks have stitching around the heel, and the bottom of the soles are very different, but as far as getting a great bargain goes, you probably won't find a better deal. I got mine for under $60 (including shipping). I'll post some pictures later if they're wanted, although there are already very good pictures of them at http://clarks.zappos.com/n/p/dp/42711682.html (click on the multiview button under the main picture). They seem like they'll be very comfortable. I obviously need to break them in still, but they are by no means uncomfortable now, and I've heard that they fit and feel excellent once fully broken in. Make sure to order a size down from what you normally wear, though. I'm a 10.5 US and I ordered a 9.5, which fit perfectly. endless.com still looks to have the best deal on these: low price, free returns/exchanges, and free overnight shipping.
