Well, it shouldn't reference Cubby or United Artists, either; but since this seems to be an exercise in "retro" poster art I don't think it really matters.

I still say that the Robert McGinnis artwork made for the BEST Bond posters. This style has not been seen since the Roger Moore years but those posters are classics.

These are the classics. The worm started to turn a little bit with FYEO...and as far as I am concerned there has been a precipitous dropoff in quality since then.
I would love for Babs to give us a McGinnis inspired poster for the next outing. I think there is nothing special about the modern posters...starting with the aforementioned FYEO.
Am I alone in this way of thinking or do others feel the same way?
Maybe I just am more comfortable with what I grew up with but if Babs and Craig want a Fleming-esque retro Bond, would it not make sense to transfer that theme to the posters as well?
But posters these days concentrate on the main stars, for promotional purposes I believe. So expect Craig's face to be prominent (though not much as he's not a conventional looker!) on the posters.
Casino Royale had to be the most boring poster yet though it did emphasise the stripped down intent of the film. GoldenEye was very dull too. Actually, now I think of it, the CR teaser poster was very much in the style of Francavilla.

In all seriousness, though, I'd dearly love to see a more old-fashioned (even illustrated!) poster for a Bond film once again. There was a certain magic to those older ones...right now, as I type these words, I've got a TB poster to my left, and a DN poster to my right---complete with the little 'United Artists' diamond-shaped logo, as seen above...
Emtiem and I debated this once; his position was that time, and the industry, have moved on. He's undeniably right...but a guy can still dream B-)

Well in a way; this particular poster is very cool because it brings to mind the type of limited run prints you see for many bands nowadays (check out Rob Jones for example: http://www.animalrummy.com/archives/cat_silkscreens.html ) and it makes Bond seem very cool in that way. I love it.
I'm not against illustrated art at all, but there's something of the slickness and coolness of current Bond that I just see working better through some really tasty photography; not the posters we're getting at the moment (QoS is a dull, photoshopped to hell affair of a poster) but something even slicker. I think they should get the guy back who did those lovely publicity photos for CR and just do a super-stylish single shot for the next poster. Hey, it worked for Goldfinger.
Yeah, it's got pretty no impact because everything's so perfect. I find it very dull. And to me it looks like it's trying to be a real photo too; the CR one is pretty much a light montage (the UK version anyway). The main CR one isn't much better, no, but at least it had the unveiling of Craig on its side.
The CR teaser beats all of them just because it's a cool, atmospheric shot.

There is another on his site; I think it's a Connery- I've forgotten to be honest.
It says on his site that prints will be coming soon, only three posters (non Bond) for sale currently.

That's great news. I have most of the original US one sheets (not re-prints) in my collection including Dr. No, but these are too cool to pass up.
