Sunspel - need to pay VAT?

This is slightly off topic but nevertheless relevant for forum members. I am located in Hong Kong, but Sunspel charged me VAT for my online purchase. I enquired with Sunspel along with several others questions. Sunspel dodged my question and I am being charged VAT. Is this right? Am I suppose to apply for my own refund? But this is not practical and this is obvious. My previous online purchases from UK retailers like Baracuta and Pediwear shoes were ALL VAT free. What are the laws? Any help would be appreciated.

    Just got this in.

    Good morning

    Thank you for our enquiry. Our current website has a technical problem and does not recognise non UK orders. Therefore, the VAT is automatically applied. If you place an order online, please note the order number and forward it to this email address. I will then arrange to have the VAT charge refunded to you card. Please accept our apologies for this, but we will be launching a new website soon which should rectify this situation.

    Just to set the records straight, Vanessa Khan of Sunspel replied to my question and explained that she did not read my email enquiry properly as she was busy filling orders. She apologised and explained that it was a technical problem and has duly refunded me. So the matter is settled.

    I went to place an order (im out of EU) and also VAT added.

    I guess this was never fixed and applys only if you ask???

    What does everybody else do who order outside EU?

    I had the same problem when I was looking at PENFOLD HEARTS, but they said they had to keep the VAT.
