Thunderball Ray Bans???

I have enjoyed watching Head of Sections podcast of Mantis' collection and was struck by the talk of the ray bans from Thunderball. I know many out theere have purchased either genuine vintage ray bans or replicas but I noticed some time ago when watching Thunderball (for the 4387th time) that the metal/silver coloured part that shows through the top corner, (now there is probably a clever name for it or a clearer way of putting it but it escapes me for now) where the hinge connects through the front of the glasses on Bonds glasses is vertical and on all the vintage ray bans I have seen (including those of Mantis and HoS) are horizontal. Can anyone explain this discrepancy. Are we absolutely sure that these glasses are ray bans?

I dunno if they are Ray Bans but they certainly are Italian design of that period. The hinge decoration you speak of is common on Persol sunglasses too, also popular in Hollywood at that time. I'm certain someone here will know the make and model of whatever they are. I'd sure like a pair, that's for sure!

I can tell you for certain they are not Ray Ban Wayfarers. They are of a shorter height than the RB, and the shape is more rounded than the pseudo-P3 (so to speak) style of the wayfarer.

There is a possibility that you could acquire an actual vintage pair of these - there are A LOT more resources for vintage eyewear these days!

I'll check out TB again soon to see if I can ascertain what make they are, Persol is indeed a possibility...

They're not C&G as the company didn't exist until after TB was finished. They do make many vintage style frames that are similar but like Bob Dylan's sunglasses of the day, the TB sunglasses were probably just an optical frame that was fitted with sunglass lenses.

It seems the Ray Ban Wayfarer gets quite a few screen credits that aren't correct. Elwood Blues didn't wear them either.

Check these Imperial brand frames out.

    See what I mean?

Here's two good sites you can check as they cycle the glasses pretty regularly.

On the one hand, it's a pretty generic style of the time that was probably made by more than one company. On the other, they are vintage frames that, if you're worried about the tiny details, can be hard to locate. Annoys me that some kid who just wants chunky glasses may have picked up the one I want rather than the one that's right next to it that's not quite right.

Otherwise you could have them custom made by a company like these, depending on how much you want to spend(they'll all be less than C&G though):

    [link]http://www.premiere-optical.co.uk[/link]

Hope you guys can find them. I've been after a particular pair I saw on a TV show in 1992 and finally just gave up and had them made.

You are right, C&G wasn't made until 1970.
