Oh dear watches again.......

Dare I dip a toe in the shark infested waters (Golden Grotto of course...the most deadly)that are posts about watches here?

I have had this picture of Mr Fleming for some time now. It hangs on the wall next to my desk originally to inspire me to finish the book I started but the more I struggle with it the more intimidating he looks! Anyway I was wondering what kind of watch it is, I think it's a Rolex Air King but I'm no expert, I haven't seen one that matches. Was wondering if one of you (Donald Grant perhaps) might know.

Not sure if its ok to post this image if not let me know and I will remove it.

You're lucky to have a nice print like that. Don't know about the watch, but that's his Colt Offical Police presented to Fleming by General "Wild Bill" Donavan head of the WW2 OSS. The revolver is engraved along the backstrap "For Special Services".

    P.S.

The larger picture that shows the front of the cylinder reveals the revolver had been fired too!

That is probably my very favourite picture of Fleming B-) The only other place I've seen it (much smaller, though) is on the back of select Signet paperbacks from the Sixties.

Thanks very much for posting it! :007)

Oh my, you guys are, as Michael Jackson once said, "devilish".

Although I have an idea, I believe a new member here has written what has been termed the definitive essay/article on Ian Fleming's watch and by extension, the literary Bond's watch. I'll defer to his expert knowledge on the subject.

But thanks for your vote of confidence, I appreciate it.

    DG

Edit: It does not look like a 1016 Rolex Explorer!

    lol. You guys are terrible.

To be serious for a sec. Just wanted to state that I am aware of the controversy of recent posts about Bond/Fleming timepieces, Genuine v Fake etc. It is genuinely not my intention to stir things up again in any way. As I've said I have had the picture for some time and I would like to get the watch identified if possible

As I have been around for some years without posting I have read many of the posts re watches and have come to respect the opinions of DG, Asp9mm, Mantis etc and I figured you guys here were the people to ask.

As for DG's post I wasn't aware that that particular watch (in my pic) was the one being scrutinized in the now closed threads or mentioned in the "new members" article. So if anyone does have any info about this one please share.

And thanks for the responses so far guys.

Don't worry, the watch Fleming is wearing in your picture is not the one that caused the controversy :D

The one in the picture above looks like an old Smiths with engine turned bezel, but I'm not willing to bet my life on it. Fleming owned very many watches and at least three Rolex watches. It will be interesting to see what developes.

One thing is certain. ITS NO SEIKO X-(

Thanks again for he vote of confidence. Yes, we do have some knowledgeable people here and Asp9mm is one of the most knowledgable. I have been long aware of that particular photograph and that particular watch.

Apart from that, I am interested in what one self agrandizing individual has to say about it. However, I don't think his/her appraisal of it will ever come.

That is fine with me. The last couple of days have been very contentious, and it's time this place got back to normal. I have a new found respect for the moderators here. I never realized that they must, at times, have to deal with some real whiners and complainers. I have, in my time here, endeavored not to be one of them.

No one has said anything negative to me, but I think the modrators do deserve a rest and a great big thanks for keeping this place running. This thread, for the time being, is just too close to the two locked threads, and I am a man who does not like to beat around the bush or pussy foot around, if you get my meaning.
