As a boy I was treated by my parents to a Sean Connery Bond triple feature re-release. It was my introduction to James Bond. I became so enamored with Mr. Bond and his world that my grandmother, an avid reader, introduced me to the novels. She took me to one of her bookstores that sold old paperbacks and promptly purchased all of the Bond Signet paperbacks for me. I still have them, and the aged musty smell can still transport me back to that time.

The Bond of the novels had particular tastes. One of the things he spoke about was "that prince among shampoos", Pinaud Elixir. I've been searching off and on for Pinaud Elixir since I was a boy. My box of four of an old stash arrived today. Here is a picture:

Remmert at jamesbondlifestyle.com has a source for these and DG is correct, they are wonderful pieces.

Yep, Mantis is right. When I saw that, I jumped all over it. As I said, I've been chasing Pinaud Elixir for a long, long time. It was not supposed to come until March. That's why I thought the Madagascar shirt had arrived. Totally awsome! Here is the link:

No I have not tried it yet. I bought two of each because my plan was to use some and save some for display. However, since it has taken so many years to find, I can't, as yet, bring myself to use any of it. I did smell one. It smells good and looks quite useable. Perhaps in the future.

Common man, we need you to be a beta-test guy...:)

I bought the two as well. Small one for display and large for use.

Does make a great lather, which I think Higson mentions in "Hurricane Gold". And, apparently, the quninine is good for anyone who is losing their hair...

Use it, DG! Display one, use the rest!

The glass bottles are more 50s authentic, but I prefer the plastic range from Paul Kox at the Dutch Barbershop as they fit better with modern life - rushing around, travelling, etc. Been using it for a year or so - Paul's good to do business with.

Had a chance to open mine up and use it. GREAT product. Smells wonderful once you pull out the plastic stopper. The glass bottle made me a bit nervous in the shower as mentioned above but the lather and feel was all worth it.

My pleasure. My thanks, of course, go to Remmert and his excellent site. My favorite Bond site is still AJB, but JamesBondLifeStyle is a cool place for collectors of Bondiana.

when I first read the title of this topic.. I thought for a second that Mr. Bond had taken a rather dark and nasty turn in his lifestyle and persuits in life. :))

Joking aside.. that looks a very nice product .. great find. thanks for sharing

Yes I agree Bondlifestyles.. is an absolutely classy and fantastic website .. love touring around it .. And Remmert is a top guy .. I had a very nice time chatting to him at Pinewood at TSWLM Reunion....

Wonderful pursuit Rick. Interesting Fleming connection in that Pinaud uses quinine as one of base ingredients...this was one of the magic ingredients in the 1950's...Fleming refers to it again with Bond's Vesper martini....use of Kina Lillet (quinine favoured...notwithstanding the ingredient is somewhat of a blooper because it makes Bond's martini bitter..but then again Bond takes his coffee black so bitterness is soemthing of a personal trait).

also on the literary grooming front...what do you think of the Kent hairbrushes (OHMSS)...notice you have the Trumpers one...or the Eucris (OHMSS) tonic...or the Fleurs des Alpes (DN/SWLM) or Camay (SWLM)for the ladies?

Yes the quinine does make for a very bitter martini. I made a Vesper not long ago adjusted to Fleming's time with the right alchol proofs and quinine powder added. It's a very bitter drink and very powerful. I like to drink Scotch rocks myself, but one Fleming Vesper (adjusted for proof) will knock you on your ass and it's hard to get past the bitter taste.

As for the Eucris, I do have a large bottle that I purchased from Trumpers on a trip to London a few years ago. I've searched for Guerlain's Fleur des Alps soap for some time, but if memory serves, it was discontinued. I also have some Tiptree's Little Scarlet Strawberry Jam, and some Coopers Vintage Marmelade. Still trying to find the correct honey.

Aha you are a collector of exquisite taste. The Norwegian heather honey Fleming refers to is Xtremely hard to find. I don't know if its still available. Fortnums stocks lots of honey but not N. I looked for it last year in London to no avail. The F. Coopers marmalade is still available though. Yes Guerlain discontinued the Fleurs D.A. sometime in the early 90's I believe. Actually there are many different types of GFdA thru the decades. The ones Harolds used to stock are the latter types with different packaging. Sent you pics FYI.

Love your martini anecdote. Must try that one myself. Reminds me sometime ago when I tried Flemings 3 and a third minutes boiled egg routine for breakfast. Fastidious timing and my only excuse was to see what all the fuss on timing was about. Well I would recommend it. remember the free range brown egg though.

Something else you may wish to try...the vintage percolated Chemex (FRWL)

I have a Chemex coffee maker too. It's funny, by reading the novels as a wee lad, I always thought it was a complicated machine, it's not. It is, however, considered a classic of design that does not impart tastes to the brew. The name Chemex is so damn cool too. Leave it to Fleming to pick a cool sounding coffee maker.

Ah yes, the French Marans hen's eggs. I have as a display piece a blue egg cup with a gold band and a French Marans hen's egg. How do you like that for Bondian minutae?

I have always fancied trying a Chemex.

Is your egg cup a Minton DG? I have scoured the earth for one like Bonds.

Speaking of vintage Bondiana I recently picked up a Fleming era edition of "Scarne on Cards".

My egg cup is not Minton. However I do have a Minton cup and saucer that fits Fleming's description and time period. The egg cup was described as solid blue with a single gold band around the lip which does not fit the Minton pattern that I found. I sourced a blue egg cup and added the gold band. Not sure if Fleming made that up, but more and more, it seems like it.

I have a vintage Scarne On Cards but without the dust jacket. Been trying to find one in good condition with the dust jacket.

Glad you like them pics. I can tell you the vintage FdA still smell terrific after all this time. And luck with the hunt.

Your Chemex...do you have the 3 cup version...or larger? Vintage handblown?

Have u looked for the Queen Anne silver?

Scarne...which edition do you have...1st or pre Moonraker...any of these would fit in timeline? The early editions all came with slightly different dustjackets.

BTW what about Hogan on Golf, etc or any of the other books on the literary Bond bookshelf? These are all fascinating reads.

Think ur right on Minton...never seen Minton with the plainer patterns. Don't think Fleming expressly mentioned egg cup IS Minton...belive in FRWL he said egg cup MATCHED MINTON chinaware. But he may have contradicted himself elsewhere...

My Chemex is the 3 cup version, non handblown. When I purchased mine, the 3 cup handblowns were out of stock. They were nice enough to inform me when the 3 cup handblown were back in stock, however I have not purchased it yet. I bought the 3 cup version because I reasoned Bond was a bachelor. However, Tiffany Case did move in with Bond for a time, so a larger version may have been necessary.

I have not gotten to the Queen Anne silver yet, nor have I gotten the Hogan book. One day I want the complete literary Bond bookshelf complete with first editions of The Mask Of Dimitrios, the Dulles book on intelligence, Travellers Tree, Natures Cure, Birds Of The West Indies etc.

My edition of Scarne On Cards is the 1965 revised expanded edition, fourth printing November 1968. Since I was into magic as a young man, pre New England prep school, I am aware that John Scarne's books are particularly sought after, particularly the first editions. That translates to very pricey.
