Aside from Coldplay's latest release and Fleet Foxes:

... can anyone suggest any fairly famous pop albums that depict great works of art ie paintings?

I've googled it but don't come up with much! :(

Crash Test Dummies (remember them?--Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm!) used classical works on two of their CD covers. First, The Ghosts That Haunt Me:

That's one of Gustav Dore's engravings for Coleridge's "Rime of the Ancient Mariner" showing Death and Life-in-Death gambling for the Mariner's soul. Then there'sGod Shuffled His Feet:

That's Titian's paintingBacchus and Ariadne, with the band members' heads painted in.

The first LP, (that's vinyl kids), I ever bought was Black Sabbath Greatest Hits. This was NOT an official album and was released without band-management involvement. (they even mispell Ozzy's last name on the back) I picked it up in a COOL AS HELL Record store in down-town Wiesbaden. Good times.

Which is a mirrored version of "The Triumph of Death" by Pieter Bruegel the Elder. (apology for size)

I'm kind of embarrassed to admit I forgot this one. Here's the cover of Kansas's self-titled album from 1974:

The John Brown image has become so iconic I think a lot of people believe it was originally done for the band; but it's actually from John Steuart Curry's mural in the Topeka State House,Tragic Prelude:
