Which Omega PO

As most of you will recall, the first Brosnan Seamaster was the quartz model in Goldeneye and he switched to the chronometer for the balance of his Bond films.

Similarly, we know that the 45.5 Planet Ocean was used in Craig's first outing with hi switching to the 42mm for QoS. The Planet Ocean line is now firmly entrenched as the Craig Bond watch.

Having said that, which of these two would you prefer to see return for the next film.

Personally, I would like to see the 45.5 come back as I think the bezel is look much nicer than the 42's.

Your thoughts?

well i love the look of my seamy, think the best one was in TND and featured the detonator.

not too fussed over the PO, but what i really can't stand is the massive price for the limited editions, which tbh, at 1007 pieces, aren't really that limited.

maybe its time for an updated seamy?

saying that, its an age old design now, maybe it should be left to rest?

I still like my old Brosnan Seamaster better. Not that I don't like the PO.

I think he should stick to the 42mm version though. He doen't need to look like he's wearing a clock on his wrist. It's a little overkill for a dinner jacket.

Might be fine on the beach.

Think i agree with you, Herr Michael. I have just bought a 45mm PO, and today put it on a rubber strap. A great everyday watch that looks good with casual wear. But yes, for those occasions you have to don the suit, the 42mm on the SS bracelet is probably the way to go.

don't laugh (now i know you all will) but as i've got tiny girl like child hands, i had to get the mid size seamy pro chrono.

anything bigger than 37.5 looks like big ben on my wrist.

the speedmaster reduced will be my next purchase, if i win the lottery.

I guess I sort of liked the use of both watches in Casino Royale.

I see the PO as a pure tool watch. I like the larger version from an aesthetics point of view. I also like it best on the rubber strap. This is also in keeping with it being a tool watch. I don't know anyone that dives that actually uses a metal bracelet when diving. Most use either a rubber or nylon strap. I think the metal bracelet is a pain in the neck...for actual diving anyway. (Truth be told, very few people even use dive watches anymore...most use dive computers but may use a watch as a back up). I'd like to see them use this watch when Bond is out of his suit and in his casual clothes.

One thing that always struck me as odd is how the bracelet stays in pristine condition and never pops open during a fight sequence. With all of that contact the watch would surely be lost from his wrist with the bracelet but a strap can't "pop" open. That's another reason I like the rubber strap. It just seems to be more realistic in keeping the watch in place during those action scenes.

At the same time, I see the Seamaster as the "dressier" watch of the two (primarily because of the basket weave bracelet). I still wouldn't mind seeing its return. It is still referred to as the Bond Seamaster so why shouldn't Bond wear it, right? I think a tradition has now been established with this watch so that is another reason for the Seamaster's continued use.

The use of two watches in a Bond movies dates back to at least Thunderball. Lazenby used two different Rolex's. So I don't think there needs to be just one watch.

I'm just not crazy about the use of two different versions of the Planet Ocean. I don't think that makes much sense.

And that my friends, is my two cents.

I have both the 42mm and 45.5mm PO models and as much as I love the 45.5mm it is just too big to wear with shirtcuffs and a suit! The 42mm however fits nicely with French / Double cuffs which, of course, Bond alays wears.

However the 45.5mm looks great in shortsleaves / casual. Its big, stylish and looks great.

So my answer would be BOTH - but the 42mm in formal dress and the 45.5mm in a more casual setting.

I like the 45mm PO the best. It was part of what set the direction of the Bond re-boot. I don't have one yet, but it is the one I want the most. I do have the Brosnan era automatic Seamaster, but it gets very little wrist time primarily because I think people associate it so much with Bond. It feels a bit goofy to wear, particularly in my line of work.

Hands down, for my money the 45mm PO is the best watch since Connery's Submariner.

I'm surprised that non-fans would even recognise it as being an Omega unless they are close enough to read it, let along knowing it is a Bond watch.

I've never had anyone recognise my Seamaster.

Most people are just not that observant while watching a movie.

I guess it depends on what you know about watches. A friend of mine recognised one of my Omegas on my wrist the other day and started a conversation about it. However he is not a Bond fan but is into diving - I guess a lot of divers like their Rolex and Omega watches.

Simliarly another friend, who is also not particulary in Bond, recognised the same watch as an Omega. However this was because his father was a fan of vintage Omega watches.

So you will be surprised who do notice. However, I do agree many would not have a clue - but as long as you love your watch who cares :p

I guess that might be the difference between living in the city and living out in the sticks too.

Most of these yahoo's and rednecks wouldn't know an Omega if you hit them upside the head with it. :s

It was quite a culture shock moving away from the city almost a decade ago.

I keep trying on the PO at AD's. It's a lovely watch and I like the idea of the updated co-ax movement housed within. However, I've owned a blk/blk Seamaster for ~10 yrs now (Ref. 2254.50) and as much as I love the smaller PO, I can't justify the purchase/acquisition as it's so close to the old style Seamaster in my collection. Even the Bond relation can't get me to jump on it :).

Between the two PO sizes (42mm & 45mm), I much prefer the 42mm. I also prefer the black dial/bezel/arabics compared to the orange version. It's a bit more versatile for use with business attire and casual attire alike. I can't pull off the massive 45mm+ under shirt sleeves and the orange makes it look too sporty...IMHO. Just my personal preference of course.

With that said, the decision *not* to purchase a PO has as much to do with my current state of the collection as anything else. I have several similar 'looking' tool watches so I need a bit of variety more than I need a PO.

When I bought my Seamaster here in the US, it wasn't offered with the current 'Speedy' style bracelet and I eventually traded off the original Bond style bracelet. It is such a versatile watch (just like the current Bond PO) that can be dressed up or down and is one of the watches that defines the 'tool watch' category (much like the Rolex Sub, SD and GMT).

It came from the AD like this:

With the original Bond Style bracelet. Even as a fan of Bond I preferred the black dial/bezel combo vs. the Blue/Blue found on the Bond item.

I sourced this speedy style bracelet from EU and wear it like this most of the time.

But I switch things up from time to time with calf, shark or even nylon NATO style straps. I always place a NATO style strap when doing activities in/around/over water as it offers a bit more security in the event of a spring bar break.

It may be heresy around here but to be perfectly honest it wouldn't have bothered me a bit if EON decided to stay with Rolex as Bond's wristwatch of choice :). I'd have those bases covered as well.

The PO 42mm is the best overall watch.

Although the 42mm fits my wrist perfect, the 45.5mm is the one I would choose.
Away at Boot Camp, won't be back until April the earliest.
