    you sure it was black?

As sure as I can be.

I've got some swatches from the original jacket and it definately looks black and not blue or grey.

Have you looked under a bright light? It could be oxford grey, which is very dark and appears black under most indoor lighting. I'd be very worried if Bond were dressed in a black suit that wasn't a dinner jacket.

I have to agree. I just don't see Bond dressed in a black suit. VERY dark charcoal absolutely, but black doesn't seem like him? just my 0.02 for what its worth.

I haven't seen a single picture that makes me think the suit is black. I guess you can't argue with the swatches... but perhaps the nature of the material makes it appear muted in certain light.

All that being said... if I had to take a guess (from the photos I've seen) I would say that it is a very dark steel blue. Although, other than for my eye, I have no authority to say that. :)

I was under the impression that the tux he wears at the opera is midnight blue and the fundraiser suit is black...could be wrong though.

Weren't the suits made out of a mohair tonic wool blend giving it a lusterous almost sheen like quality to it? that could account for descrepancy in color. the lighting could have easily thrown off the color as well. That and in post production editing when they do color correcting etc, it can very easily change the actual color seen on screen. though i didn't make the movie, but it seems like a possibility??

Never to the Black comment. A black suit goes against Bond, and typical dress code in numerous ways. If they did put a black suit in there, it's a mistake. I'm almost positive bond does not wear black aside from his tuxedo.

So I really don't know what color it is. When Bond tosses mathis in the dumpster, under the light it looks like a very dark navy but I don't believe that it is. He's probably wearing a very dark charcoal...Clarification would be nice, though.

Not to be argumentative, but what is wrong with Bond wearing a black suit?

Quick update on the suit colour.

It's been a tough one as the only scenes witrh the suit in daylight are when it's covered in dust.

However, Indy Magnoli has compared a swatch with various materials and it matches more closely with his cool cashmere in midnight blue. The way the swatches are mounted and the colour of the backing behind the material affects the look as well.

Looking at the swatches I have, in particular the one with Camille's dress, there is a more noticable difference in colour between that and Bond's suit - much more so than on the other cards. I now have to say it does indeed look like it's a very VERY dark (almost black) blue.

Black, traditionally, has been reserved for mourning, or evening wear, and thus not appropriate for an everyday business suit. This rule has been lifted in the past few decades, though there are traditionalist (myself included)who feel that black is still inappropriate for day wear.

Yep, black is to be reserved for semi-formal/formal events. Or for waiters and mobsters. I could see a Bond villain wearing a black suit, but not Bond himself.

That is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard.

I am in complete agreement. I only pull out my black suit for semi-formal (the modern definition) evening events or funerals and the like. Otherwise they are only appropriate for jewelry store employees and undertakers.

Although... I might make an exception for a black suit in cotton...

You may find it ridiculous but since the late 70's black is a formal color to wear at formal occasions only like a funeral. It is a matter of etiquette. For that reason alone the suit worn by Bond at the Green party cannot be black and is indeed midnight blue. Why else would anyone wear a tie in the tones of blue like Bond does at the party but with a dark blue or navy suit. The last black suit worn by Bond was worn by Roger Moore in the gun chase scene in the last minutes of "The Man With The Golden Gun" and by Connery in "Diamonds are Forever" a few years before that. So put your black suits aside keeping them for nightclubs and funerals and get a midnight blue or charcoal color suit... as Bond does.

I agree. The tie did seem of a blue hue to me, but at times grey, so it was difficult to decide if the suit was navy or charcoal. However, based on the tie alone we know it couldn't be black.

If you have the DVD, look at where bond tosses mathis in the dumpster. The light brings out the color in the suit.

No...the midnight blue is very distinct from black. And, with the blend and quality of the fabric, you're probably mistaking the sheen and richness of that midnight royal navy as a black.

Plus, if it were black, you'd notice right away that the tie doesn't match.
