Mathis sunglasses?

I am sorry if this has been covered, but does anyone know what sunglasses Mathis is wearing in QOS?

Thanks, in advance.

You had it in there too, didn't you? I'm usually so good at paying attention. :#

Okay so this may sound silly with the budget of this movie but these glasses look just like Ray Ban Caravans. I found a couple of stills from the movie and the really thin wire-like temples with the black hockey stick ear socks are a match, as is the shape. The RB logo isn't there, but they wouldn't have left that anyway(if this is them). Sorry I don't know the exact one but I will break out the video later and see if there are any ID marks.

The photo of Mathis seems to have the top bar bowing slightly upward, whereas the Ray-Ban glasses seem to be straight and level, but it might be an illusion. With that said, Persol, Ray-Ban, and Oliver Peoples are all owned by Luxottica. Given Ford's propensity to borrow OP designs, it's possible these are Ford's take on the Ray-Bans. Perhaps a search for "Tom Ford Aviators" on Google might yield a bunch of images for comparison.

Thanks. I noticed that too. Nevertheless, why does Ray Ban not have the caravans on their website? Were they discontinued?

If you take a look at the very large linked pic, the top bar is straight. As far as TF, most of his glasses have a pretty thick or flat temple.

I've looked through quite a few glasses(as well as the movie scenes) since last night and none that I've found seem to have the wire-like temples that the Ray Bans(all their classic aviator style glasses) and Mathis' glasses have.

I wish I could find a good pic of someone in the glasses. Anybody got any screencaps of Goose from Top Gun? He wore caravans.

They put out a limited edition white gold pair in December of '08 and they've been making them as long as I can remember, like the regular aviators and wayfarers. Either way, they're readily available from retailers.

Also, did TF have any other glasses in the movie? Greene's glasses were Cutler and Gross so it wasn't an exclusive. It seemed the hero glasses were fairly low key while the villain sunglasses were very flashy. The RBs would fit this trend.

BTW, I'm not a fan of RB since Lux took over so I'm not trying to push you either way. I just hope Lux doesn't get any design control over OP. That would be heartbreaking.

Thanks, no problem. I just find it hard to believe that what Mathis had RB on, but you are right. They are very similiar.

I am sorry to bother, again, but I have done some research and the Caravans, from what I have gathered, do not come with polarized lenses, even if you wanted them.
  • KittlemeierKittlemeier U.S.Posts: 432MI6 Agent
Lenses are an easy fix. To get them without the logo you'd have to have new lenses made anyway, at which time you could get polarized. Any optician can cut polarized lenses and tint them however you want. I assume you could probably get it done at frames direct.

It's pretty common for lenses to be replaced for tv or movie productions to get just the right tint and especially for safety. I just got one of the last gold Oliver Peoples Victory frames in size 55(out of three they had in the company) and had glass Cognac lenses(one of the last six pairs in the company) made for them. These are the glasses the main character wears on "Burn Notice" although his have polycarbonate "safety" lenses which were custom made for the production per OP. I actually have this color combo in the Airman also. I call them my "Bond Notice" glasses(yep, I'm a dork, my wife will confirm).

Personally the only glasses I have with poly lenses are strictly for the motorcycle, safety first. Any lenses otherwise are glass because they're MUCH more scratch resistant.

I know how you feel about wanting the exact glasses. I've been after a pair that a character on another television show wore about seventeen years ago. Finally found a company that will custom make them. It's the same company OP uses for single frames when a customer wants a discontinued frame so they should be top quality. We'll see how it goes.

Thanks for responding. The OP glasses you mention are the ones I have wanted for a very long time. However, they are a little bit out of my price range for now.

I think I am going to pick up a pair of the caravans. I truly like them and they appeal to me.

Well, they had a couple more pairs of the gold and four or five more of the silver in size 55 but once they're gone, they're gone. Same with the correct lenses. Even the off colors in the right size have been going for more than retail on ebay. Of course the 58 may fit you anyway and they have lenses similar to the cognac but not exact. They should be available for a while yet.

It helps to actually do some calling sometimes. Might have been easier a few months ago but I just started watching the show. Just got lucky that they consolidated the inventory of that style so they were easy to find.

Good luck with the Ray Bans.

For what it's worth, you can pick up Victorys in size 58 on ebay for the same price you'd have in a pair of caravans with custom lenses. OP says the gold pink quartz is the closest lens to the cognac though it has a slight mirror.

what is the deal with the sizing? 55? 58?
  • KittlemeierKittlemeier U.S.Posts: 432MI6 Agent
The number is the millimeter width across the lens. Three millimeters doesn't sound like much but it can look like a lot. Size 55 was worn in the show. The airmans are 57 but don't look as wide because they're not rectangular. Do you normally wear aviators and what size are they?

Right now I own a pair of RB 3322 but I don't know what size they are. I think they are 60mm since I think they come in 60 or 64mm

I know that the caravans come in either 55 or 58.

That one has slight wrap which will take up a few mm of width. I'd think if you can wear the 3322, you should be able to wear the 58 OP. Keep in mind the caravan only comes in 55 in silver or gunmetal. The 55/58 choice is for the gold or black.

BTW, my victorys just came in about an hour ago and I love them. Wasn't sure how the shape/size would work but they're great. Have you tried the Airmans? If they're the least bit small then the 58 victory should work for you.

I wish I had the victory. Enjoy them very much. Thank you so much for your help.

I unfortunately may just go with a non gold color. I don't know yet. If I do, that would force me to stick with the 55. I guess the difference negligible.

Good luck in whatever you decide.

BTW, I just ordered another of the BN victorys for a spare. If I get tired of the style or anything, I'll keep you in mind.

Actually, I have a quick question. Do you think that Mathis is wearing something closer to the 55 or the 58mm?

His frames appear silver/gunmetal so I'd think, if they are the caravans, which I believe they are, then they'd have to be the 55.

I tried comparing them to the Persols from CR(59, but wrap) but the difference in shape, etc makes it tough. Like I said though, my 55 victorys(flat, rectange), because of shape, appear larger than my 57 airmans(slight wrap, teardrop).

Just noticed a page in the new GQ is dedicated to square aviators. Along with the old Air Force issued Randolph Engineering glasses(which were refreshing to see), they also had a pair of silver RB Caravans. No OPs but they did have a pair of Mosley Tribes which are made by OP.

Throwing down the Thread Necromancer card here, sorry. :#

A little tip on a cheap way to make the Caravans more screen accurate. I just picked up a pair of Ray Ban Clubmasters a few weeks ago, my first pair of RBs in probably fifteen years. Got tired of the lens logo very quickly and found a great solution online. You can use the edge of a penny to scrape off the logo without any damage at all to the lens. The copper is harder than the paint but softer than the glass so it works great. I didn't want to use any kind of solvent as I didn't want to damage the finish of the acetate. The result:

Otherwise, another option for this frame is the Oliver Peoples Patten, which was released this year. The temples won't match quite as well and they're the usual OP price but they look great. I'm considering picking up a pair myself.

Heh, this thread is so dead. Oh well.

Picked these up about a month ago and figured I'd post a couple of pics. Ended up scratching the logos off these also, just don't care for it.

Looks like he wore a gold pair in Bolivia. I'm still convinced the Italy glasses are silver or gunmetal though as the temple ends are clear on the gold version and black on the others, like the glasses in Italy.
