Literary Bond's beach shirts

In 'James Bond - The Man And His World' by Henry Chancellor, he notes that "In Jamaica, Bond shares his creator's taste for bright, bold beach shirts made by Antonio's in Falmouth".

When I first read that book, I thought "rubbish" - I'm sure I'd have remembered that.

However, Ben MacIntyre asserts that "On the beach in Jamaica Bond wears bright beach shirts by Antonio's of Falmouth" - possibly backing up Chancellor.

Can anyone point to the novel and chapter in which I can find that reference? Until I read it for myself I still doubt that Fleming ever wrote it.

Yes, I'm a stubborn ****** :))

I took a quick flip through DN earlier to see if I could find the reference, but no luck. I first assumed it's mentioned in LALD, DN, TMWTGG, or OP, or possibly TB, but there is no guarantee that it wasn't mentioned elsewhere.

However, Chancellor's book has some factural errors and so I don't quite trust him on this. And while MacIntyre seems to back him up, it is possible that Chancellor is his source.

Any help would be appreciated.

All I recall is Bond wearing ever wearing is a "dark blue sea island cotton shirt". I would think anything "loud" is very un-Bond.

Sometimes authors dole out absolute drivel, or assert a Bond factoid as "real" when it is based on something that was written up in a non-Fleming novel, which in my conservative view - dosen't count.

Agreed, the Sea Island cotton shirts are the only ones I recall.

Agreed with both 7289 and Asp9mm, I can only recall the sea island cotton shirts too.

The problem is that I know the novels to such an extent that I can often go straight to the chapter in which something is mentioned, to the extent that when I've read Spanish translations of the books I can easily spot where the translation isn't exact.

And I just cannot remember anything about Bond wearing a shirt that was anything but sober.

transitator007 - Turnbull & Asser make great sea island cotton shirts for formal wear, I've never had a short sleeved shirt in sea island cotton.
