British Double Bills

I have many Quad Crown posters, newspaper ads, campaign books (pressbooks) & composite material accessory sheets from the 'official' James Bond double bills in the United Kingdom during the 1960s/70s. Can anyone please help confirm the years these Bond double bills were released:

DR NO/FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE
GOLDFINGER/THUNDERBALL
DR NO/THUNDERBALL
YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE/FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE (some parts of the country got YOU ONLY
LIVE TWICE/DR NO)
DR NO/GOLDFINGER
YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE/THUNDERBALL
DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER/FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE
LIVE AND LET DIE/ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE
THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN GUN/LIVE AND LET DIE
THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN GUN/LIVE AND LET DIE 'Nobody Does It Better' campaign
THE SPY WHO LOVED ME/LIVE AND LET DIE
MOONRAKER/THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN GUN
MOONRAKER/THE SPY WHO LOVED ME
FOR YOUR EYES ONLY/MOONRAKER
OCTOPUSSY/FOR YOUR EYES ONLY/THUNDERBALL
OCTOPUSSY/FOR YOUR EYES ONLY

Thanks very much for any assistance! If any one knows of any other double bills (for which a Quad Crown poster was produced) in the UK, please let me know. Thanks again.

    Hi,

I too have a bunch of these, but I will have to confirm the titles at home.

Do you have images of what you have? I would be very interested to see what I could be missing.

As for dates, I am not sure this will be very easy as, unlike the US posters and Lobby cards, we did not of NSS numbers that gave away the dates.

    Have sent a PM.

Can only help with the first few, and I wouldn't accept them as gospel, as the details come from cuttings in my first dozen scrap books, adverts for the double bills showing in the Birmingham area, but as I was a kid at the time (well, 20 in 72), the dates attributed to the cuttings may not be 100% accurate

    DR NO/FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE1969
    GOLDFINGER/THUNDERBALL1968 (July?)
    DR NO/THUNDERBALL1972 (May?)
YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE/FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE 1971

    Hi Mark,

Is there an image of the quad for Goldfinger / Thunderball in your cuttings?

If so, I would be interested in seeing it.

    Many thanks.

There is a small image from the Birmingham Evening Mail, but I can't find tags or remember how to post a picture from my pc and I can't seem to find instructions how to. Copying and pasting doesn't work on PMs either as I just tried. If someone lets me know how again I'll try and post the picture later.

In the British campaign book (pressbook) for GOLDFINGER/ THUNDERBALL (1968) there's an image of the Quad crown. It's very simple, just the titles in jumbo block letters, no taglines nor artwork. However, when the two were later re-issued along with a children's matinee showing of THUNDERBIRD 6, a new Quad featured colorful artwork of back-to-back Connerys in the gun pose with the golden girl and elements of THUNDERBALL artwork.

I'd be happy to scan and post images if someone could please send me step-by-step directions by PM. ('Science was never my strong suit')

I would be happy for images to be just emailed to me - you both have my address now.

Dead simple, and at least I am covered in terms of needs. Said he, selfishly.

    Cheers.

I may be of some help concerning the 007 double bills as i am in the process of researching dates and theatrical showings of all Bond films in the Liverpool and Merseyside areas throughout the 60's and 70's.
Firstly, i was unaware that there was a double bill release of Dr.No/Goldfinger in the Uk. Was there a quad for this and if so do you have it?
I was also unaware that there was a YOLT/Dr.No release. Again, was there a quad produced and if so do you have that?

Dates: I can confirm the following release dates in the areas mentioned above.

DR.NO/THUNDERBALL Double Bill Release: September 1972
DIAMONDS/FRWL Double Bill Release; May 1974
OHMSS/YOLT Double Bill Release; November 1975
GOLDFINGER/THUNDERBALL Double Bill Release June 1976
YOLT/OHMSS Double Bill Release; June 1977
OHMSS/ DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER; July 1978

I have recently acquired the Goldfinger/Thunderball 1976 Quad re-release from a projectionist in Manchester with images printed by W.E.Berry, its fab, i will post it on here soon. I recall a quote from the old Screen International predecessor which had an executive from UA complaing about the Bond films being sold to ITV, citing that the 1976 re release of G/T out grossed all previous Bond double bills.
I have all the press cuttings for the OHMSS/YOLT releases in 75 and 77, showing in all Odeon and other chains and i am led to believe there could well have been a quad. The summer of 78 double bill of DIAMONDS/OHMSS , i actually saw and this it seems may have been an independant request to showcase it.
When i complete my full research, i shall list all.
P.S. I cannot believe that not once did they show a Moore Double Bill of Bonds in the US.

I really enjoy that this topic is generating interest and responses because the concept of re-issuing older films into the cinema on a double bill with a massive marketing campaign no longer exists (at least not here in the United States)

SheriffJWPepper, thanks so much for sharing your information and dates. I was unaware of 3 of the British double bills you listed: OHMSS/YOLT, YOLT/OHMSS and OHMSS/DAF. I'd love to see ads for these as I've never seen a Quad nor press material composite sheets done for them.

Regarding the DR NO/GOLDFINGER double bill, I have a press material composite sheet that features the newspaper ads and 2 separate Double Crown posters 30"x20" because there is no Quad. I also don't know the date. If you send me a PM, I'll send you a scan.

GOLDFINGER/THUNDERBALL was first re-issued with a pressbook and Quad on July 28, 1968. There are ads and it even made the cover of WHAT'S ON IN LONDON.

Here in the USA there were only 6 'official' national re-issues throughout the 1960s and 1970s. The marketing produced pressbooks or ad slicks, a set of 8 lobby cards, at least a 1 Sheet poster or a whole variety of poster sizes and usually TV spot trailers. They were:
DR NO/FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE May 26, 1965
    GOLDFINGER/ DR NO Sept 28, 1966
    THGUNDERBALL/FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE Oct 2, 1968
    THUNDERBALL/YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE Dec 23, 1970
SPEND A NIGHT WITH JAMES BOND: Dr No/From Russia With Love/Goldfinger Je 14, 1972
MOONRAKER/SPY WHO LOVED ME Apr 23, 1980 (this one is interesting because press ads
and even TV spots were made but the release never materialized)
Release dates are for either New York or Los Angeles, whatever appeared first.

During the 1970s theaters could throw together any combinations they wanted to book but there were 8 other 'official' national re-releases by United Artists that produced pressbooks, ads or re-use of earlier 1 sheets:
    GOLDFINGER/DR NO Feb 26, 1969
    DR NO/FRWL Je 2, 1971
    GOLDFINGER/FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE May 26, 1972
    THUNDERBALL/YOLT Sept 6, 1972
    DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER/OHMSS Feb 14, 1973
THUNDERBALL/DR No May 1, 1974 or some parts of the country had DIAMONDS ARE
    FOREVER/YOLT
and yes there were re-ssues of Roger Moore Bonds because I saw both MAN WITH THE GOLDEN GUN summer of 1975 and SWLM/MAN WITH GOLDEN GUN Dec 1978

(Did ANYONE stick around long enough to read all this?)
  • SimesSimes WindsorPosts: 80MI6 Agent
    Yup, me.

So there is a Gf/Th quad with images...? As above, the pressbook seems to illustrate a quad with just writing. I have the pressbook, but not the quad.

Currently, this is the only outstanding quad I am aware of and would love to see some images if artworked. Really figured there would be none of these in existence now due to lack of artwork.

    By the way, there is a superb movie poster discussion forum at;

    http://www.movieposterforum.com/

I am a moderator there, for my sins. But it collects all the people who have been privy to this sort of information and, more importantly, remember it.

I will attempt to post a scan of the DR NO/GOLDFINGER composite material accessory sheet. The 2 Double Crown (20x30) posters were taped together to advertise this double bill in theaters in the UK.

Didn't receive any replies from you sir.

Thanks for the image above Dr.

sheriffjwpepper was kind enough to send me a scan of his GOLDFINGER/THUNDERBALL Quad Crown (1976). With his consent I'll share it with you below. Later I'll post a scan of the original--and less inspiring--Quad crown from the 1968 re-release.
