Only Fools and Horses/Citizen Smith creator John Sullivan has gone to the great Hooky Street in the sky. :( Not old by any means, either.

    Plus punk pioneer Poly Styrene.

The Grim Reaper's aiming low these days - hardly old. She had an album out only a few months ago, and sounded quite contemporary.

British boxing legend Henry Cooper has died:(

Great shame, "our enery" was a gent and legend..

And of course really a world champion....only prevented from being crowned by illegal action of Ali's trainer Dundee, who broke open a vial of smelling Salts to revive a dazed Ali and can be seen guiding Ali to his stool ( he was so dazed he got up again, like a drunk)

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jnEDM4EC5kw&feature=youtube_gdata_player

The torn glove story is urban legend....Ali only got an extra few seconds, not the 2minutes 'enery and folklore claim...

    But interesting story..

    Henry Cooper and Ted Lowe.

    Really, really sad. Great losses.

Sir Miles, you mentioned Ali paying tribute to Sir Henry. I once saw Sir Henry stand up at a dinner party, at which Ali was also present, and pay respect to Ali.

He gave an off the cuff, unprepared speach. And it was a really touching, , genuine, sincere, articulate tribute.

I'd always liked and repected him. And it was so nice to see that he can stand up and capitivate an audience in the way he did.

Ah, I wish I was a bit more of a wordsmith and could put my thoughts into words better than this.

Sir Henry Cooper. Great loss. Sad day.

This will mean nothing to Brits and perhaps nothing to young Americans, but Harmon Killebrew, one of the all-time great baseball players, has died of esophageal cancer at 74. On to those extra innings in the sky. . .

The comics world has lost another artistic legend: GENE COLAN Dead at 84 due to a long illness.

For those who came up reading the comics back in the day, Colan was famous for co-creating Blade, drawing Tomb Of Dracula, Iron Man & Daredevil.

He will be missed because he was one of the influences I've grown up with artistically. RIP :(

I hope this is not in bad taste But does anyone know Lt Columbo's first name?
as I made a point of finding it out a couple of years ago as I was sure it would come up in a pub quizz. Which by the way it hasn't.

I did some research, and came up with this. Lt. Columbo's first name is Frank. Picture from Wikipedia:

    http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/1/1a/Columbo-Signature2-bright.PNG

    From Wikipedia also:

In the 1971 episode "Dead Weight", when Columbo introduces himself to General Hollister the audience is shown a brief close-up of Columbo's badge and warrant card, complete with signature, which appears to read "Frank Columbo". The same ID badge and warrant card is seen in numerous other episodes, and the signature "Frank Columbo" is clearly visible in the season 5 episode "A Matter of Honor".
Universal Studios, in the boxset release of seasons 1-4 under their Playback label, included a picture of Columbo's police badge on the back of the box, with signature "Frank Columbo" and the name "Lt Frank Columbo" in type. This appears to be a different badge from the one seen in "Dead Weight", with a different signature. However, when Columbo is explicitly asked if he has a first name in season 4 episode By Dawn's Early Light, he just dispassionately answers back that he does, but the only person who uses it is his wife.
In the season 12 episode Undercover, Columbo is asked once again what his first name is, to which he emphatically answers, "Lieutenant," a sentiment echoed by actor Peter Falk and creators Richard Levinson and William Link

MSNBC reports Amy Winehouse has been found dead in her apartment, she certainly had her issues, but she also had a great voice.

I had the very rare privilege of seeing a sober Amy Winehouse live in concert at a small venue in 2007. We were at the very front and spent the entire concert somewhat nervously just a few feet from her, leaning on the stage. She was phenomenal. Her voice was superb, her energy first-rate and don't forget that she wrote all of her own material - a truly great talent. Sadly, there are probably not many people like me who ever had that privilege. Many of her concerts were appalling due to her being incoherently drunk or stoned. Having seen or heard her in that state, many probably don't even believe that she had a great voice and imagine that her albums were digitally manipulated to make her sound good. But as one who was fortunate enough to see her in her all-too-brief prime, rest assured that she was indeed a phenomenal talent.

It's very sad that someone who could have been churning out great music until she was in her 60s or 70s has instead died at 27 and left but two albums. Although few saw that enormous talent live, rest assured that she deserves her place with some of the greats of her genre.

A horrible shock, the circumstances are Paula Yates all over again it seems. I remember seeing her spa with Simon Amstell on Buzzcocks many years back, she was a great laugh.

But I have to say I feel awkward, what with something like 90 deaths in Norway from some nutter with a gun (yet again), you can't put these tragedies together can you.

Except to say it is the depressing here-we-go-again thing of it, about both tragedies. There isn't anything groundbreaking about either of them. It doesn't even have anything original about it, it's like they're just following a turgid blueprint.

It does indeed....at first it was a heck of a shock...but the more you think about it, the more it seemed inevitable...a great talent wasted.

    RIP Amy.
