My Dr. No U.S. 1 Sheet

Here is a picture of my "Box O One Sheets" followed by pictures of my Dr. No one sheet. I keep all of my one sheets in an acid free environment according to the rules of archival preservation. One day they will all be framed archivally. Note, original Connery one sheets will always be folded, never rolled. If you come across someone selling a rolled Connery one sheet who is representing it as original, run the other way.

    Hmm.

    I have the US 1 sheets to the first four Bonds all linen backed.

    They are lovely.

    I prefer my one sheets without the linen backing. A lot of poster dealers have gone to this to mitigate the appearance of folds or as a basis for restoration. In that case they can be rolled, although most dealers store them flat. I have a Humphrey Bogart (Action In The North Atlantic) one sheet that was mounted on linen. Nothing wrong with linen, but it's harder to see the original condition of the one sheet and you can't see the stamp on the back. Rice paper was an alternate method of mounting, but you don't see it much these days. Linen is by far the preferred method today and can be done at any time.

    I too have the one sheets from the first four Bond movies. In fact, I have at least one one sheet from every Bond movie. By the mid 80's, ('83 or '85 depending upon what you read) one sheets became available rolled along side the folded ones. The rolled ones are preferred for obvious reasons.

    Splendid stuff.

    I am in the UK and predominantly collect the quads. The reason I had to get the 1 Sheets is because the quads are just prohibitively expensive. Where the 1 sheet design mirrors that of the quad, I have not bothered but where it is different, I have.

    To this end, I have the 1 sheet for the OHMSS teaser, but not the main. I do however have a rolled OHMSS quad which is exquisite.

    That ethos has not followed through to the present day where collecting both the quads and one sheets is now a matter of completism. It is also comparatively cheap.

    I tend to sort of agree with you ref the linen backing, but aside from Thunderball, I have had all the backing done myself. With posters of this ilk, there must be something to be said for preservation. Plus of course, they were cleaned up and restored to former glory. They were also all in supreme condition paper loss / tear / pinhole wise, but hey.

    Simes, first let me say welcome to AJB. I see you are a moderator on a movie poster forum. That's great. Your knowledge and expertise is quite welcome here.

    I hate to say it, and it may seem like blasphemy, but I never really liked the quads except for two. The rare Goldfinger version, and the Thunderball version with the 4 panel artwork showing the frogmen in the surf in one panel. I know some people consider the country of origin posters like first editions but I don't. For that reason, the quads go for crazy money. For me, I much prefer the 27x41 (now 27x40) size. Part of it is I grew up with this style. I suppose if I had been born in Great Britain, I might feel otherwise. My other reason for collecting one sheets is because it is the style of Hollywood and Hollywood still produces the overwelming majority of movies in the world today. In fact most of the world today uses the 27x41/40 movie poster. Moreover, it was the U.S. market that made James Bond such a success. Lastly, and I'm sure you are aware of this, when you collect anything you should collect because you like it, not necessarily because of worth. Perhaps I buck the trend, but I like what I like. I hope you can forgive this colonist.

    I have both versions of the OHMSS one sheets. The teaser, silhouette (blanked out face) version could do with a restoraton because folding and black do not go well together. For about $100.00, last time I checked, I can have it linen backed and restored.

    Again, thank you for joining AJB and providing me with a new resource. Most of what I know, I learned from books and dealers. However, when I started collecting, the Bond poster books did not exist yet, I used books regarding general movie posters. I also collect other posters including World War II Merchant Marine recruiting posters as well as other areas that strike my fancy. I also have one sheets and lobby cards for the Indiana Jones series, "James Bond's son".

    Speaking to the issue of country of origin, I also wanted to add that the idea that the Bond movies were an entirely British production is false. The Bond movies were made by two American expatriates Albert R. Broccoli and Harry Saltzman. The Bond movies also used American funding via United Artists (Hollywood). United Artists was also responsible for distribution of the films and the United Artists art department was responsible for advertising/exploitation of the films including movie posters. They hired some of the best artists many of whom were American, including Bob McGinnis, Frank McCarthy and Bob Peak. Robert Brownjohn (Goldfinger campaign) is the only one that I remeber as being British. The Bond movie posters don't fit the same mold as the novels. But I'm not complaining, although I've watched my collection grow in value over the years, they are not at the same level of the British quads and I still need some alternate one sheets. Shhh, don't tell anyone.

    Thanks. When I purchased it, it was actually one of the least expensive of the Connery/Bond posters. I thought to myself that will change. I mean the first poster for the most succesfull series in movie history with the actor that set the Bond gold standard. How could I go wrong? Interestingly enough, the re-prints of the Dr. No 1 sheet have a very white background, the original is not so white and glossy. Been meaning to show more of my original Bond 1 sheet collection. Perhaps over the Holidays.

    I have some foreign material myself, however the linchpins of my collection are the original U.S. one sheets. You mentioned Moonraker, I think I have all the Moonraker U.S. one sheets, including one of the un-cut "one-stops" since there were two versions. For those of you who don't know what a "one-stop" is, it was an ill fated attempt to have a set of lobby cards sandwitched by two one sheets on one poster. The idea was for the exhibitor to cut the one sheets and lobby cards himself. It did not last past that year. The one stop has two different one sheets featuring fantastic artwork of Moore in the classic Bond pose.

    Please feel free to post pictures of your collection either here or in another thread. We'd love to see them!

    It's a movie poster measuring 27"x41". It's what is considered today to be the standard U.S. movie poster size although modern one sheets have shrunk to 27"x40".

    I do not know anything about James Bond posters and I would be a little scared to buy from eBay, because of the usually very high prices.

    How much something like that is worth today?

    You can be lucky and find some good prices but generally you'd have to pay premiums on certain really rare posters cuz they're so htf.......

    If you have a 60s US poster and it says the title (for example "Goldfinger") in the bottom right corner then it's 80s re-issue.

    It's very very rare to find authentic 60s/70s posters rolled as most were factory folded........caveat emptor with reprints X-(

    locandina = 30x70 cm's..........smallest of the Italy posters , easy to frame
    1sh = 27x41 US , 30x40 U.K , 23x33 Germany
    2sh = 2-sheet , common sz in France/Italy but rare sz in Germany
    3sh = 3-sheet
    4sh = another standard sz in Italy
    6sh = the yanks used to have this sz , dunno about nowadays though
    8sh = got the 3x4 meter AVTAK poster , needless tp say framing this would be helluva expensive :/

    Well the dealer I bought the Dr. No one sheet from now sells it for around $2,000.00 depending on condition. That's no where near what I paid for it. In terms of appreciation, it's done exceedingly well. It was one of the cheapest, now, at that dealer, it's the most expensive of the Bond posters.

    As for buying on ebay, you've got to be very carefull, particularly if you don't know what you're doing. As for auctions, I noticed when I was buying that auction prices (Christies etc.) were often two to three times higher than dealer prices. If you are new to the game start with a reputable dealer and ask a lot of questions.
