A James Bond Museum in Illinois, U.S.A.??

Looks like the Ian Fleming Foundation is considering a rather unorthodox location for a James Bond museum that would display vehicles from the Bond films: Momence, Illinois B-)

I'd previously heard that one of the Q-Boats from TWINE was now in Illinois...

As an Illinoisan, I'm delighted by this news, if slightly bemused. If it happens, we'll have to see how many AJBers can make it to the Midwestern U.S. of A. -{ If they're going to hire guides, perhaps I can make a career change :D

It's not uncommon for significant museums and halls of fame to be in unusual areas. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is, for example, in Cleveland, rather than New York or LA.

And when they start not smiling back—that’s an earthquake. and then you get yourself a couple of spots on your hat, and you’re finished. Nobody dast blame this man. A salesman is got to dream, boy. It comes with the territory." Death of a Salesman

Cleveland makes a bit more sense; It was a Cleveland radio disc jockey, Alan Freed, who coined the phrase 'rock and roll' to describe the fusion of blues and R & B, and started giving it some serious rotation in the early Fifties, making it an arguable 'birthplace'...and of course, it would have been cheaper to build the museum in Cleveland than NYC or LA.

So in that sense, a Bond museum in Illinois is going to cost less to run and maintain than it would in other areas...then again, it will also suppress potential visitor footsteps, as it's certainly unclear how many people will travel across oceans and countries to come to the middle of nowhere to look at the Q-Boat, or one of the original film DB5s. I'll certainly travel across Illinois to see them... :)

No offence Leoff, but I've been through Illinois, and beautiful though much of it was, James Bond hardly sprung to mind whilst I was there. Will certainly detour when I'm nearby next time though...

Definitely closer than the car museum in the U.K. Only a few states away! I remember that man driving the Q-boat in a history channel special a few years back. They also gave a little tour of the IFF-saw Neptune and the Moonraker Glastron. It's nice that they decided to have it open to the public.

Yeah, that's my point (no offence taken, BTW :)) )---why do you think I got into the original Flemings when I was a kid? Anything to escape the flatlands, even if only vicariously! :)) A less likely place for Bond I cannot imagine.

When you do, let me know B-)

I did the same thing in Tennessee. At least the museum isn't there. The world Fleming described is so far from today and yet so real that it just springs right off the page.

Interesting if nothing else. I'm in Southern Illinois so I'd make the trek as well. Can't imagine Bond ever having business in this state though. Unless it was to investigate international corruption. Illinois my have branched out you know...8-)
