Connery Bond Trilby

Here are pictures of my James Lock & Co. Sandown Trilby as worn by Sean Connery in the early Bond movies. I've retained the original shipping box, it was purchased in approximately 2002. Interestingly enough, the trilby sometimes appears grey on screen, but it's only available in brown. So much for definitively trying to decipher color on screen.

I always thought it was brown .....
The hat looks better on your mannequin than it did on "Big Tam". SC always wore it pulled too far down on his head, and it made his ears stick out too much!
Except for the golf hat in "Goldfinger", and the various straw hats in "Thunderball", Connery always looked "odd" in a hat.
It's a very nice trilby though, and I am sure you look qiute dashing in it!

Although Baron Hats has some good product, I have two problems with its Connery/Bond hat. The first issue is that Connery wore a James Lock and Co. hat and it's still available. So why buy a facsimile when you can get the real deal? The other problem is that the ribbon on the Baron offering is far too wide when compared to the Lock trilby. Interestingly enough Lazenby's trilby in OHMSS had a wide ribbon and looks black. I'm certain it was a different hat than what Connery wore.

Yes I saw that on the AFM website. I've been trying to get a copy. It does not seem to be on the newstands yet. The build up of Connery in the latest issue of AFM was done by Don Pierce. He did a great paint up of the bust and full scale figure. In fact I used to have his paint-up as my avatar before the migration.

Like past issues, the magazine was published late, more than a month beyone the late July date mentioned by some online comic shops, which I can guess is caused by missed deadlines for the projects they feature acccording to whatever the current theme is, since it's often difficult to rush art! It's frustrating in my area, despite being in one of the largest metropolitan regions in the United States. The numerous comic and hobby shops don't carry it and so far only one Barnes & Noble within my location has carried it consistently, which they say isn't guaranteed; only one other B&N and one Borders stocked it on a sporadic basis. Out of frustration, which happens quarterly when the new issue is announced on the AFW website, I decided to stop wasting gas and cell phone minutes that I've consumed in the past month and called the publisher, who mentioned that shipments first go out to subscribers, followed a week later by retailers...so I finally subscribed and got issue #45 less than a week later (to date, my Barnes & Noble contact hasn't called as she promised, which she usually does).
BTW, is that the same artist, Don Pierce, who painted your bust? The article says he contacted you to acquire a bust and it sounds like a recent action, but that could have been a while back since projects like these can take a long time to get finished. It would be great to see other shots of his 1:1 Connery, since the magazine can only include just so many images.
There is one B&N where I can consistantly get AFM. However, that location is still carrying the Batman/Aurora/Polar Lights cover. I think it's a great magazine and have many old issues but have never subscribed. It seems every issue that I particularly want takes a long time to get to newstands. I may have to go your route.
Don Pierce did not paint my bust, that was done by Steve Riojas:

He's actually listed on the link page of AFM online. The Connery bust featured in AFM was actually purchased several years ago by Pierce and he sent me a photo of his paint up which I used as my avatar. He also posted about it over at rhe Replica Prop Forum (RPF) and showed some phenomenal pictures of his full scale Connery/Bond. I think his paint up is the best I've seen thus far. I did not know I was in the article as the contact person for the bust. Howard Senft, of course, deserves the lion's share of the credit for his fantastic sculpting abilities.
On a personal note, I've allways wanted a bust of Robert Shaw as Donald Grant. However not sure there would be enough interest, although NAZI collectors might be interested as well.

And about the Baron Hats version: it's grey, exactly as on the pictures, which makes it not an ideal replacement for the real thing and it's almost as expensive as the real thing. But it's definitely a good hat, very good quality, I have one and I like it as a hat.
Just like DG says, if we can't see the hat was brown, how can we ever start even discussing the color of the Rolex wristband

Enjoy it in good health. Don't feel bad, even Giblin's book "James Bond's London" got it wrong in calling the hat grey. They got the right hat maker though. I suppose grey could also be considered canon because it sometimes appears that way on screen. In a couple of my shots above, it even looks grey.

I was able to find the most recent issue of Amazing figure Modeler at a B&N. It contains an excellent article by Don Pierce on his outstanding build up of the 1:1 Connery bust. Just great, and it gave me some good ideas on my own build.
If memory serves, I think he posted here way back when about how he did the hands. Too cool for school!

In May of 2008, I had the pleasure of visiting James Lock Hatters, and Mr. Lamb fitted me with the Lazenby Trilby, which is indeed black. I wore it to the Bohnham's Auction at Newport Pagnell, the famed Aston Martin factory.
You can see a video of my visit to Lock and AM on www.OHMSSDBS.com, in the "Hunt for the DBS/Arrival" section.
I will be ordering a SC trilby for Christmas.
Cheers!

Gebruder, what's the model style/reference of the Lazenby hat from Lock's? Travel felt in black or the more expensive (£500!) super felt?
Ditto what he said.
