New York & DC

My better half has surprised me with a trip from Blighty to New York to see the man, Daniel Craig, in A Steady Rain. I was looking at redsleighdown's excellent post from his shopping trip last year, and was wondering if there are any goodies people have tracked down recently in the Big Apple? We have T&A and Church's here in London. Any suggestions on stores to hit? Top of the list is the Y-3 store, if they still stock the DC jacket, and maybe a few Tom Ford pieces, but any thoughts on other items to hunt out?

    I checked out the Y-3 store here in LA two weeks ago, and they've long since discontinued the Bond jacket (which was part of the '08 line, I believe). They have the Fall/Winter '09 line out. Like many designers, you've got to get the item during the season in which the line is out (or on the discount rack when the next season's line is introduced, if you're lucky to find it, and in your size). Otherwise it becomes a 'needle in a haystack' search.

    If anything, I would check the bigger department stores, like Neiman Marcus, as they carry Y-3 and Tom Ford. You might get lucky with a TF cardigan or Harrington jacket. I believe they've discontinued the "QoS" sunglasses, so if you see a pair, pick them up. Y-3 has a similar jacket to the "QoS" jacket out now for Fall '09, but the collar is slightly different as it has a hood that zips into it. The rest of the jacket is a pretty close match though. But it's a bit pricey at $500.

    Good luck on your search, and have fun in NYC!

    Kind regards,
    Craig

    Sorry it's taken so long for an update on my trip to NYC. DC and Hugh Jackman were legends in A Steady Rain. Only very occasionally did you get the merest glimpse of 007 beneath DC's New York drawl and gruff NYPD demeanor. The play was on the short side, with no interval, but what an experience. Thanks Missus. On the shopping front, as suspected not much to be gleaned. Went to Tom Ford, and they had no Harringtons in any colour, so one up for Harrods. On the cardigan front, only a bright red in my size. But who am I kidding at over £1200. I couldn't find a Neiman Marcus in Manhattan, but did check out Tom Ford in Bergdorf Goodman, but no joy in the Bondage department. The salesman tried to interest me in a non-Bond cardigan. A snip at $4,500!. Same deal at the Y-3 shop. They'd sold out of the new season QoS jacket, so those interested probably better keep an eye on the xileclothing.com site, or plump for a Magnoli special. I did pick up a pair of Sevens, but as I've got 2 pairs of the standard mercers (which they've stopped making now, they told me), I grabbed a pair of their skinny cuts, called slimmy's, as they have the all important blue button(!), which I may transfer. Anyway, loved the whole experience, but London isn't as crap for Bond clothing as I thought. Cheers.

    What, no Omega watch at the Omega store? ;)

    Mantis, I'm all Omega-ed up. I'm a diehard Brosnian Seamaster automatic advocate, and haven't yet been wowed yet by the Planet Ocean. Forgot to mention that I grabbed a Prada belt in the Saffiano leather from their store just opposite Tom Ford uptown, even though it would have been slightly cheaper in London (!). What happened to cheap shopping in New York for us Brits? I think sruzgar had been on the case before me, as the assistant asked if my name was Simon and a Bond fanatic! :s You saw us coming...

    I belive Matt Sherman is conducting a Bond tour of NYC towards the end of December...Matt's tours are a lot of fun so if you can come out to this might be nice to engage with other Bond-ians.

    The PO is an awesome watch I have both models, 44mm with rubber strap in CR, and the 42MM steele in QS as well as the seamaster in the earlier bond movies (and CR)
    If I had to choose only one to wear daily it would be the PO steele, hardly shows and wear...very robust

    Mantis - the Matt Sherman NYC tour sounds like it would be great, and great too to meet some of you guys, but unfortunately my over-active Bondian loins, combined with my successful cloning programme, are providing me with a daughter, due 27th December, and I like my loins where they are at the moment. Don't think the missus would be too chuffed with me taking a jolly to NYC whilst she pops baby no. 2 out! :s

    Sruzgar - the Prada assistant was a he, not a she, unfortunately, but camp as Mr Wint & Mr Kidd, so I'm sure you could call him what ever you liked;)

    Paperbill - I'll have to do some serious work for Santa to put the PO on my Christmas list, but, agreed, it is cool as...-{
