Goldeneye - Chemical Facility Question

What was the purpose of the mock "capture" by 006 of 007 in the closet at the chemical facility? I never understood that....

Thanks!

It was technically a defection. If 006 was killed in action MI6 would close the books on this particular agent - thus leaving him free to set up Janus and work for his own means. However, Bond re-set the timers, and 006 was burnt in the blast.
What is a little confusing is the indication that with Bond witness to the mock exection, then it was always intended for him to escape and report back to MI6, therefore closing 006's file. This makes the escape staged to enable Bond's escape, but it seems far from that. Bond is fired upon constantly, kills his way through it and has that dramatic free-fall off the cliff. If it were staged, then Bond's escape should have been far easier. So the whole execution/escape is a little convoluted to say the least.

I think phoenixcadet ment when Bond has a gun put to his head and Alex asks him something in russian, probably the equivelent of "Halt who goes there?" just after he leaves the toilet. I always put it down to Alex having a bit of a joke with James as he would have recognised Alexs' voice and it plays into the whole "I was always better than you" line at the end fight in the dish

I had to read that about 3 times to understand it. Convoluted? Quite. Thanks for helping me understand it a bit more!

Also curious - what is it that he says (in Russian) to 007?

That's exactly what I meant (sorry for any confusion). I guess a bit of my confusion after the last post stemmed from how that could tie in with the given info.

Thats what I figured, though, Agent_M. I just wanted to make sure.

I've looked at 3 scripts on-line. Two say the same thing, the shadowy figure says something.

The third script says the shadow figure says:

    Ni odnoho vyzdoha. Gdye vashy?

I ran it through two translators, nothing came up. Pig latin maybe? Spy speak? Maybe someone else knows

oh yeah, that makes more sense to his question. Forgive my inane rambling. :#

In answer to the original question, I think it shows off 006's dominance over Bond. The fact he got the drop on him feeds 006's ego and makes him feel "Top Dog" so to speak. Later in the film he says "I was always better than you..." Or words to that effect...

I believe what Alec Trevelyan says at that point is "Don't make a move! Where are the others? in Russian. Bond then replies "I'm alone."

I always thought it was a test phrase like when Bond says to Jack Wade, "In London, April's a spring month." In this case the test phrase was, "Ni odnoho vyzdoha. Gdye vashy?" where Bond had to respond "I'm alone" lest he wanted a bullet between the eyes. Also, I think it was meant for the audience. We see a shadowy figure with a gun pointed at our hero's head and he's yelling Russian. Right off the bat, they're throwing curveballs. It's a good way to introduce Alec as the shapeshifter archetype.

Anyway, I'm sorry if I just stated the obvious. It was a good question because Bond had to know he was rendezvousing with 006. After all, that was an objective in the N64 video game(which I accept as canon).

According to John Gardner's novelisation, the line is "Don't even breathe. Where are the others?"
