Obama - He comes in peace...

Wow. So the US President has won the coverted Nobel Prize for Peace. And with two wars and the desire to commit more ground troops to boot...
Now, call me cynical but wasn't Obama sworn into office in January, and isn't Nobel's criteria for consideration made in February? So he technically won the award for a mere pledge to deconstruct America's (and hopefully the World's) nuclear weapon programme. Now that's a sound pledge, but I think we need to see a little more than empty words and a month in office.
I served as a soldier for many years and have been in combat several times so I have been all around the block so to speak, and believe me when I say that poloticians are not high up in a soldier's asteem so I'm sure there are a good few service men and women out in the Gulf and in Afghanistan who are a little bemused at this news, though not as bemused as the White House and asteemed members of the political press, so it would seem.
Obama isn't my leader to judge - although I quite like what I see of the man - but what I think the prize truly represents is that Obama is not George Bush, and for most people, that was enough...

Political discussion on this forum is never around for long, but I believe your comments were well presented and I agree completely. AL Gore and Barack Obama are now both winners of the Nobel Peace Prize for talking a good game. I will contain myself and say nothing else.

I don't know about the politics involved, but I thought the peace prize was supposed to be non-political, in which case, I can't see a single possible reason for Barak Obama to win it. He hasn't done a single worthwhile thing to change the world yet. I think it's a soft body wink to the U-S-A for electing a black president and I don't think that's a good reason for handing out a peace prize. If they'd waited until he'd resolved the Israeli-Palastine mess (which Obama has almost as good as sworn to do) then,hell, yeah, I'd give it to him, but now? Nahh, no way...

I never thought the Nobel Peace Prize had any real significance, but the fact that they awarded it to someone who has really done nothing at all (yet) basically proves the award is meaningless. If I were a past recipient, I'd might as well toss my Peace Prize in the wastebasket with all of my other CrackerJack prizes.

It's indeed a great day for the president---Pope Benedict has just named him Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire, as well B-)

Later this weekend, he'll be looking to best the record for eating hard-boiled eggs set by Paul Newman in Cool Hand Luke.

I have alot of respect for the Nobel Peace Prize, and I would have voted for Obama if I was able to, but I was a little disappointed that he had won, as I think the award should be for what you have done, rather than what you will do. It won't impact my respect for the award, but I think awarding the prize to Obama is premature.

I absolutely welcome the Nobel's commite's choice.
It's correct, that he doesn't have a long lists of results, but he deserved it for simply opening the windows and letting some fresh air in.

He's following to positive goals of the founders of the UN and that's what the price is meant to be for.

In my point of view from the "old world" the public healthcare is just one example. We have it here since the Bismarck days (1883!) and the fact, that over 40 millions US citizens don't have access to it is unthinkable here.

He'll need every support that he's able to get, and as he's following the rights ideals, the price is very early (agreed) but welcome here.

What does healthcare have to do with peace?
I agree that British NHS style healthcare should be a basic human right, and I think an opt-in/opt-out healthcare system should be available to all, you pay the taxes and you should get something out, but that is a humanitarian and welfare issue, and nothing to do with peace.
However, surely fighting two simultaneous wars with a civilian death toll now in the hundreds of thousands, and soldiers' into the thousands, and wounded civilians and soldiers combined to well over a million, with millions of displaced people throughout the mid-east, can't even begin to constitute peace. I know he took over an impossible situation, inherited two wars, but the fact remains, he has personally brought peace to no-one, and is personally yet to deliver on a single war/peace election pledge.
In my outside opinion, he seems a breath of fresh air, and I like what little I have seen of him on the world stage, but The Nobel Prize For Peace? No.

I would suggest another venue to state your views on President Obama. Like him or not, a person should respect the office. And if you want to argue that, please PM me.
