Fantastic cover - congrats to Daren on that. Can't wait to get hold of a copy.
Just one thing... For an expert with a S&W, I thought Oscar would carry the same piece - isn't that a Colt .38 on the front cover?

Yeah, I found out about this a while back. It's funny---I was joking to someone that I ought to market B&A as a vampire book, since the title rather sounds like one, and they're completely ubiquitous now...then I find out there's already a vampire book out there, LOL. I'm doing the "look inside" option on Amazon as well. It won't be there quite yet---nearly, though. I expect to get the green light from the publisher at any moment, and we'll be rolling.
I'm not worried by "the other B&A" in the least. There's a rap album out called Blood & Ashes, as well, by some act I can't remember...but I don't think I'm competing with either of these markets, LOL.
And to answer your question about the gun...it was stock art, and cheaply bought Jade's very much a "pick up" man with his weapons in this one---in fact, ironically I think he shoots Colts more than S&Ws B-)

I like characters to pick up weapons. There's no obsession with what they use, adds realism and taylors the next scene to what the writer/director has in mind next. I'd like Bond to carry a holstered Walther PPK and use whatever he needs as and when he finds it.

The dinosaurs haven't been forgotten, Loeffs... ?:)
Neighbours is spelt with a 'u'....
More seriously, I'd switch the green on the cover to a dirty yellow, green doesn't sell well (the reason magazines never use it on the cover) and the yellow would look odd and interesting in a noir context...

The advice on the green is appreciated, but green is what it is. Daren made that selection, and I happen to love it...plus there's that whole double-meaning thingie with 'Jade,' so...if someone's not going to buy the book because there's green on the cover, c'est la vie. That's beyond my control, and not worth worrying about. I'm signing copies with a green marker, as well )

However, your point about the colour is an interesting one...but books seem to be a bit separate from magazines, at least in terms of perception---and it's far from absolute. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince features one of the greenest covers I've seen on a book in a while...then again, it's J.K. Rowling, and she likely ignores memos about cover colour

Well... :v [gulp]
I've always been determined that AJB would be where the news first breaks...so here goes.
The book is published, as of today...although, as I've learned, everything happens at its own pace; availability on Barnes & Noble, Amazon, etc., is still unfolding as I type this...but right now, although the tabs don't work yet ( X-( ), here's my website with the publisher:
Meanwhile, I'm processing orders at my own website, http://oscarjade.com , in the order I've received them (pre-orders first, naturally). Please keep in mind that the delivery time for signed copies will be a bit extended, as I need to place orders with the publisher...but I DO ship internationally. If a signed copy isn't a big deal, watch the link above or your favourite online bookseller's website for availability as it unfolds (in excruciatingly apparent slow motion!)...
Thanks to all for your interest, and/or patient indulgence over the past few months....

Here's the press release for B&A, slated to move on Monday morning, 2nd August 2010, at precisely 10:43 AM, Central Daylight time. For economic reasons (my own ;% ) it will get a regional distribution, centered in Illinois, U.S.A....but it will be seen by all news organizations, magazines, media outlets, etc. We'll see where it takes us:
“Blood & Ashes” heralds literary debut of private eye Oscar Jade
Retro-style Mystery/Action Thriller set in Miami Beach, circa 1941
SPRINGFIELD, ILLINOIS, August 2nd, 2010/"Blood & Ashes" - Oscar Jade, a hardboiled sleuth in the gritty tradition of Philip Marlowe and Mike Hammer, makes his debut today in "Blood & Ashes." It’s an action-packed mystery novel set in Miami Beach, Florida, at the dawn of America's entry into World War Two---and make no mistake: Jade means business.
Author Mark Loeffelholz describes his hero as “a cruel man with a kind face, so people tend to underestimate him.” He's a down-and-out private detective who lives in a one-room apartment above the beachfront Pelican Bar & Grill. Two days after Pearl Harbor, after he is rejected for military service, he takes on a beautiful client who claims her husband wants her dead---and soon finds himself entangled in a violent conflict between rival factions of a New York crime family.
"I wanted Oscar Jade to be an antidote for the modern day," says Loeffelholz. "He exists in a time before DNA testing, cell phones and the internet. In his world, the line between right and wrong is still pretty clear. A man is as good as his word...and the bad guy usually gets what's coming to him." Political correctness is out the window, too: Jade will do whatever it takes to get the job done. "He's not afraid to use 'enhanced interrogation techniques,'" Loeffelholz adds with a laugh. He says that he got the idea for the Jade novels from his father. "My dad had just finished reading a Mickey Spillane book, and he told me I ought to try writing an old-fashioned private eye story," he says. "And once I got started with it, I knew I was onto something. There’s a lot going on inside this guy. Jade keeps a lot of secrets, even from me!"
"Blood & Ashes" is published by Outskirts Press and is available at all major online book retailers, such as Amazon.com and BarnesandNoble.com, as well as the author's website, OscarJade.com.
About "Blood & Ashes" Mark Loeffelholz is a screenwriter and novelist who lives in Springfield, Illinois. "Blood & Ashes" is the first in a planned series of Oscar Jade thrillers set in the 1940s.
