Daniel Craig's Bespoke Rolex Submariner

It seems Daniel Craig is now sporting a bespoke Rolex Submariner from Project X Designes. It is based on an aniversary edition green Submariner with the crown guards ground down. Jake's Rolex Watch Blog has the scoop here:

http://rolexblog.blogspot.com/

Page down and you'll see it. Here is the Project X Link to the watch:

http://www.projectxdesigns.com/details2_PXDSS1.html

Although I've known about Project X for a while and this particular Connery homage, I did not know, until now, that Daniel Craig wore one.

Project X Designs seems to be following the same course as Bamford and Sons that started with PVD 5513 Submariners and BJ's PVD Prohunter series, both based loosely on the so called and legendary "Black Submariner" that had a teflon coating that was available in extremely small quantities to the South African special forces.

Edit: This Makes the Mark II Bond homage (Kingston) look better and better. It would be very cool to see a bespoke watch on Bond in the upcoming movie. Perhaps a PVD Sub or P.O.

Now that IS nice. They started out doing bespoke service and alterations of customers own watches. I think it was about £700 to remove the crown guards a couple of years back.

That watch is sweet. But it would have been even better if they would have continued by grinding down the bezel ring with the ugly Rolex engraving.

Has anyone knowledge on the black carbon coating. I have seen a couple of black Submariners and Seadwellers on watchuseek, they seem to be PVD coating, which imho is not really durable.

The black carbon coating sounds promising, I have seen one black Omega Seamaster years ago from Denmark, which had an experimental "diamond" coating, which sounded to be very durable.

Edit: Does anyone know, where the black bracelet from the Project X Rolex does come from?

On a sidenote, I wonder, what Omega would say about DCs Rolex obsession. Some meetings there may be worth to be spied out :D

The toughest type of PVD is DLC. DLC stands for Diamond Like Coating. It's very hard and durable. If you scratch it, you are taking metal with it. Been thinking about a DLC 5513 or 1680 for a while now. A good place for the DLC is Industrial Watch Works. They bead blasted a custom MK II Seiko of mine a while back to make it anti-reflective.

    Thanks DG,

do you happen to have a pic of the mentioned Seiko after some wrist time to give us an idea, how the coating looks like?

Edit: Sorry I realize that beadblasting is not a coating

Yep, beadblasting is not a coating. But here are pictures of my MK II modified Seiko with beadblasting by IWW. It's on an Olongapo band with Merchant Marine Officer's cap insignia. It's pictured with my Merchant Marine Expeditionary Medal awarded to me for serving as a civilian mariner in support of U.S. and allied coalition forces during Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm.

I've also photographed my CWC SBS watch with PVD coating. It's photographed with vintage and current SBS insignia. The old motto of the SBS was "Not By Strength, By Guile". The new motto is "By Strength and Guile". Since Bond is a former SBS Operative, it's a perfect watch for him. No scratches yet, however I don't beat on my watches. By the way, PVD today is a lot better than it was in the 80's.

DG, you are missing the main and still the unofficial-official SBS symbol ever. PM me your addy and I'll send some bits over ;)

The old motto is so much better, so most old-timers will frown upon the new excalibur version.

I know the one you're talking about. It's the original one with the frog and parachute and old motto. PM coming at you!

Apologies for getting further off the bond theme… but with regard to super durable black finishes, I really like the nitriding Breitling have used on the Super Avenger: http://www.selectism.com/news/2008/10/11/breitling-super-avenger-blacksteel-chronograph/

Black Out Concept is a new one to me. It seems they DLC your watch, which is different than Bamford and Son, BJ's Prohunter and Project X. Those companies furnish the Rolex that you customize. Still, they are all quite pricey for what they are. If I were to go that way, I would have IWW do my personal Rolex for a fraction of the cost and have perhaps a custom logo or my name put on the dial by a re-dial shop. James Dowling had a 5512 replacement case PVD/DLC coated a few years ago by IWW with very credible results, and at a fraction of the cost. I think it was done in protest to the 50th Anniversary (green) Submariner.

Anyway getting back to the CWC SBS watch. I would love to see it on Craigs's Bond in perhaps a flashback scene while working in the SBS. It's a genuine current issue SBS (Special Boat Service) watch and very British since CWC (Cabot Watch Company) is a British company.
