OHMSS Glovebox Silencer

Cheers All.
Following delivery today of Syd Cain's marvellous book "Not Forgetting James Bond," it looks as if on page 93, there is a photos of the late, great John Stears holding a glassfibre SPECTRE gun...complete with a silencer that appears, to me, to be the same as the Aston DBS glovebox silencer that sparked a great running thread earlier this year.

PM me if interested in replicas of the glovebox silencer, I am having some made for my OHMSS DBS car, and will make available a few for my fellow collectors.

For updates on the DBS, log on to OHMSSDBS.com
Cheers!
Tom

Good eye, Tom…I agree…that suppressor on the model most definetly looks like the silencer in the glovebox of the Aston Martin

It's close, but on the glovebox silencer the knurling is right at the muzzle end and is only about 5mm wide, it is so shallow it does not photograph at all well and appears as smooth as the rest. The one in your pic has too much checkering to be the glove box one, but the overall shape is the same. Pic not great, but the best I can dig out at short notice..

They were all custom made by Bapty so should be very very similar.

I suppose one can speculate that Bapty made several of these acessories. If so, it could be that slightly different silencers were used in the various images of the Aston Martin/ Lazenby unit.

The one in my pic above is the screen used version.... The knurled bit was being rethreaded as some over zealous idiot unscrewed it and then jammed and threaded it getting it back on leaving the can open 8-)

Here we go again indeed Ed :) :))

ASP9mm how are you my good man, the photo you posted many thanks for that, but in the picture is the replacement silencer in the glove box prop, which did not have the Knurrled front like the film seen one when Bond removes the telescopic sight ... the replacment archeive silencer was smooth and had no knurling or thread...

ok I spent an entire weekend a few weeks ago sompiling lots of research , card modeling , experimantations DVD refferals and hours of books and testing my eyes were burning out of my head by the ned of it , but all worth it for Tom's fantastic Aston and the nice chap himself :)) although my sleep pattern has not been the same since !

ok please see below all of my findings and thoughts on this topic. so i dont need to re type it all again .... :))

Holy crap SGG, that is one in depth result. The silencer that now resides in the Aston Martin glovebox set seems to be the original one used in the film, but it is missing the knurled part, so is completely open at the front and smooth, it has the screwthread that inserts into the machined barrel, but this is protected by a plastic cap. This was not there in the film and seems to have been added for protection. With this removed and the cap re-inserted it is a spot match for the screen caps. The picture below was taken earlier this year by myself and has the square back end to the silencer and thread cap removed so you can just make out the threads exposed as per the original screen caps, the front knurled part of the cap is still missing leaving the whole silencer open. This whole piece is now in private hands:

    DSC04646.jpg

It is a poor pic as the pics I have are all hard copies, so it is pic of the pic.

If you contact ppw306r he will confirm that the PPK silencer also has this knurled end (striations actually, not knurling), as he owned the original piece. I cannot post pictures of it as it now belongs to someone else, but it was on a prominent prop site for quite a while. The dimensions of the PPK and glovebox silencer are different. The PPK silencer would not fit into the glovebox recesss

The striations on the end can be seen on the screenshots clearly...

    DSC04648-1.jpg

The most accurate to Lazenbys publicity silencer I have seen in your thread, is this one...

    slide18.jpg

Here is ppws last post on the subject...

    Hi Guys,
I used to own the actual screen silencer George used for press shots for OHMSS & Sean used for DAF press shots & can confirm it is the same silencer used by both actors. The knurled cap is just that, a screw in threaded cap with a knurled edge for better grip when screwing on & off. The dimensions are roughly 80mm by 25mm with a 10mm threaded stud. The silencer was made of aluminium which was then blued to match the blue of the PPK. I can't confirm if it was the DBS glove box silencer but because of its size I would think not. It is now in a private collection & for that reason it would be inappropriate for me to publish images. 3 years ago the silencer was signed by George Lazenby. He spent a great deal of time & effort trying to get his full signature to fit on such a small tube..What a gent! There was only ever one example of this prop created.

I doubt there is anyone alive today that knows more on the subject of the screen used guns and silencers as ppw, so you can pretty much take what he says as gospel.

Hi ASPM9MM thanks for that ... looking more closely at the picture you posted.. i can see the thread at the back now and i do admit its not the archeive silencer like i first thought ..... the archeive silencer i am reffering to is the smooth one with a tappered back and not thread as featured in the japanese props book etc ..

all i can do is declare all of my findings and all of the research i have compiled above and all of that is my final thoughts on the subject :)) as my brain is fried :s

I am sure Tom will take on board everything that has been put forward regarding this prop and the replica in the making for his Unique Aston display car, and decide what is the best route to take with regards to replicating..

I do fully understand what you are saying ASPM9MM but i deffo dont think that in the film there is any knurling at all on the silencer and it is just a shadow from the scopes thumb screw cast on it.. but thats just my opinion ..

what is the deal with all of the silencers featured in OHMSS was there some sort of product placment deal or something like that ? these styles and designs.. on machine guns down snow slopes, on PPK publicity shots and in Gloveboxes ? :s as i say my brain is fried :))

if indeed what you say about the picture you posted taken recently of the Glove box prop .. why isnt there some exess ressess / slot / guttering in front of the silencer in the red padding, if the threaded part is no Longer present ... like i have demonstrated here as a quick example

    slide8.jpg

    cheers guys

    Hey SGG,

There is a gap in front of the silencer in the glovebox in my pic, it just doesn't show well in my naff picture.

The piccy you put up of the PPK and promo Casino Royale silencer replica needs adjusting too. You labelled it as a P99 silencer, which confused the hell outta me and a few others.

    :)) :)) sorry about that ...

the strange thing that has happened with my entire James Bond replica pistol collection .. is that the silencers from my PPK's screw into the P99's and the P99 silencers can be used on the PPK's an un planned feature but funny how things work out..

So i know I have labelled it as a P99 silencer which is beacuse it is from the P99

if this explains what you are questioning please let me know...

because I am now confused and its my silencers :))

Did the Glove Box Silencer re - surface in 1995 for GOLDENEYE Publicity shots with the stunning Famke as Xenia

    !Bcf3jqg!Wk~$(KGrHqYOKj!Eq5LGJrJjBK0vc2Lfuw~~_12.JPG

have a good look at the knurling at the tip of the silencer... I dont think it is the same silencer but pretty similar when you see Lazenby holding it for his publicity shot .. although the threaded inset attachment where it screws into the PPK looks slightly different ..

however it would be cool to hear further thoughts on this . ?

No, definately not the OHMSS silencer.

The actual silencer used in OHMSS were not real but machined pieces made by Bapty,

ok it may not be the same one as used in OHMSS but how do you know that the silencer on the PPK she is holding aint a machined dummy screwed or jammed into the PPK ?

i knew it was a long shot :)) does anyone else have any pictures of this gun she is holding ? i am sure there was a shot of Brosnan holding this prop gun with the knurrled tipped Silencer

It may be a scratch built dummy, but it looks like a .22 airgun suppressor with modified adaptor. The gun itself is a replica PAK.

The gun and silencer in Eds picture was used in a photoshoot for a magazine (Esquire if I remember) and was not supplied by Bapty or even Angels etc. It might reside Stateside.

And the CR one is definately a cheap .22 airgun supressor modified to fit the PPK. There are further CR publicity piccies with Craig and a stainless Interarms PPK. The first pic is of a pre-war Zella PPK.
