Having litened to the clip Moonie attached of Dame Shirley, my vote goes to her, what a great voice. I think anything she would sing would be far superior to the lame songs we have had recently. I am sure she can still deliver a great song, just don't ask her to hold the last note like she had to for GF.
If Shirley isn't available, I think Chrissie Hynde would be great and I think she would do it.
I've been waiting for almost 30 years for Annie Lennox to do the title song. If the film was appropriate, Bowie would be another possibility.

I wonder if she was ever approached or did a demo, Loeff . . . her voice is entirely unique, has the "body" that a chanteuse for a good Bond song has to have, she prefers intelligent lyrics (and sings them that way) and also the requisite atmospheric instrumentation, and has had experience working on soundtracks, though The Eurythmics' 1984 was essentially distanced from the film. Bowie in his prime would have been an excellent choice (think: Cat People -- it's odd to me that now that they have a Gen-X Bond, they don't have Gen-X-favored musicians on Bond as well.

I haven't heard him in the last year or two, but some of the live performances I've seen from a few years ago suggest he still has the pipes. But he's aged quite a bit recently or at least gotten heavier and puffier than his youthful self.

On that one, totally. But crucially, the potential is still there. That song was something fresh and in the Bond tradition, but with a familiar voice. Given the right material, the right song and production, that voice can still work today in 2009 as it did last in 1979.
I agree. Dame Shirley is the definitive voice of James Bond movies, and it's no coincidence that the best and most fervently remembered Bond themes were sung by Bassey. I haven't seen another artist whose voice can match Bassey's powerful, yet sexy delivery, complementing the big, brassy notes of a typical classic Bond theme.
What about KOL or Metrostation. Greenday is a good alternative.

I'm going to go in a completely different direction as everyone else here and say Lady Gaga. Now before you go off on a "shocked and appalled" rant hear me out! Firstly, the girl can actually sing (watch and one of her live performances on youtube and you'll see) and her voice has a certain Barbara Streisand/Liza Minnelli quality to it. She is a great songwriter and I think that if given the task, she could write and perform a really great theatrical and powerful Bond song.

I think Paloma Faith has a voice that would suit a Bond song
She does, but for me it's all to retro...i would love to see Lady Ga Ga go overoard with a lush strings laden torch song, a true Bondian epic with a modern twist. Eon have truly made some terrible choices, particualrly in the Craig era so far. 23 needs something special to make up for the last two Turkeys and DC deserves a song that matches his approach. Lady G could give us the right mix of twisted and tuneful. What do you think?

They might be a little too poppy for a Bond theme. But I JUST heard their song "James Bond" and I have since listened to it about 50 times - SO catchy and fun! And it basically sums up my childhod watching Bond films, haha.
I would like to see k.d. lang get another shot at a Bond theme - on the front end this time, not the closing credits tune like they gave her for Tomorrow Never Dies ("Surrender"). She has a beautiful, classy voice and having her do the title song would remind me of the classic Shirley Bassey days!

Pixie Lott caught my eye before she caught my ear. Being an avid FHM reader I eventually read the words next to the pictures and found out she was compared to Duffy and Amy Winehouse, two artists I like and believe have a bondian style.

I honestly wish they'd go back to letting the composer do the main title song,by almeans get a top singer or band in to do it,Lots of great sugestions here. an example would be TND. I'd rather have "surrender" than what was used as it feels part of the film and not just a tacked on pop song.
