Anyone ever worked in a bar? I need help.

Hi, this is Toutbrun. Yes, I do have a life outside the Clothing section.

I have this problem. All my glasses I put in the dishwasher OR that I wash by hand come out with some little soap still on them. I don't know how you English call that, mais il y a des résidus de savon. I Googled a few things but it didn't work out.

My problem is that it changes the taste of my drinks. The glass smells something (I don't know what, but it shouldn't smell anything), to a point that I go to bars so that I can really enjoy it. Of course it's not that bad, but maybe you know me now, I'm very picky.

So I need to know how they wash the barware in bars. The soap, the technique. I'm looking for a set of a Scotch decanter and 2 crystal glasses - but I won't use them if they smell something or change the taste of my Talisker. Same thing with sparkling wine.

I need serious soap-wise help.

I worked in a bar for a couple of years whilst at college. What I remember most about the glass washer was that it fed off two liquids a liquid soap and a rinse-aid (one was called Di-San, I think), and that it was monumentally hot when you took the glasses out. So hot that they were almost dry between taking them out and turning around to the shelf.
I find coke and lager fizzes up wildly if soap residue is in the glass, so I now wash the glass, then rinse in very hot water and allow to drip dry. Cloths/towels are washed in soap and fabric softener, and the residue remains on the cloth (think of the smell of your freshly laundered clothes). I hope this helps.

For best results, wash in warm soapy water, then rinse in hot un soapy water, holding the glass upside down, by the stem, and move up and down, letting the water slosh up inside of the glass. Then leave to dry - you then, for best results, 'polish' with a dry, clean, lint free cloth, pincering the cloth between the inside and outside of the glass 'bowl', until sparkling, you then finish off with the stem. Hold it up to the light to make sure all smears and streaks have gone.

Somehow drinks always taste better in a spotless, sparkly glass :D
