Rucsack/Backpack

Does anyone have any idea what backpack/rucsack/everyday bag Bond would use? I'm in the Market for a work bag right now and need a practical, yet Bond-esque, receptical for my equipment. I'm a life long Bond dan just like you guys but for the life I've me I can't recall a similar bag he has used in either his movie or literary incarnations?

Also, what contents do you think he would have if he was desk-bound and in between assignments?

Thoughts please ;0)

I like the Jack Spade bags and even use one as my primary laptop/attache case for work. The canvas ones are urban, but classic at the same time.

Don't buy croco, it's expensive, cliché, it won't make the impression you hope it will and it's cruel.

Jack Spade has some nice stuff. The husband of Kate Spade if I recall. However, Bond does use a rucksack in the pre-credit sequence of Goldfinger and again while surveiling Auric Enterprises. It was a shiny black nylon affair with blue straps. I made a replica of it for myself.

Wow, thanks guys - what a great response!

Donald, you're spot-on re: the Goldfinger backpack, and that's the only thing I could think of myself. I guess it's a tall order trying to find any others really as Bond wouldn't stoop as low as to carry a backpack would he? It'd be Gucci (TMWTGG) or Tom Ford (QoS) leather goods/luggage!

I'll keep my thinking cap on but these ideas are great...and I'd never heard of Jack Spade or the other brands - U.S. retailers?

I'm now using the RRL Leather Mailbag. It's the same as the one carried by Kiefer Sutherland as Jack Bauer on season 8 of 24. That's not why I bought it though. I had been looking for one for a couple of years and when I saw it, it was exactly what I had been looking for. It's based on the old USPS mail bags. May not be as dressy as you need though.

Runs $795 and can be bought in certain Ralph Lauren stores.

I think if Bond were deskbound between assignments, he would carry a classic flap and buckle briefcase much like the one Fleming used.

I bought one of these (it's a reproduction of a 1945 U.S. Army briefcase) about ten years ago and it is fantastic:

    http://www.customhide.com/custom_1945_US_Army_briefcase.html

It gets better and better with age! You can have these custom made to your own specs - I had mine made without a shoulder strap.

Rucksacks are fine for field work, but Bond would not be caught dead carrying anything resembling a purse or a woman's beach bag! :))

    Absolutely!

Got to be Swaine and Adeney. Or Dunhill (or Tom Ford, these days if he does that sort of thing).

But an urban Bond in combats with a rucksack just ain't working. So just be yourself, eh?

Mark Cross (which originated in New York and is unfortunately no longer in business) made some killer attache cases back in the day.

Michael Douglas carried a very sharp one in "The Game."

Good call on Swaine and Adeney! If you can afford it, go for the original FRWL attache!

I have always wanted one, but refuse to pull the trigger as "You'd be surprised how much wear and tear goes on out there in the field!" ;)

I think these work best when used as more of an overnight bag, as you really have to pack it full to keep everything from shifting around. However, as their site states they can customize it a bit to suit your individual needs. The price is still outrageous!

I will contact Custom Hide to see if they would ever consider doing a reproduction of the Bond attache!

That's one I looked at many times. Love the straps that go all the way around, just hate the giant brass latch. Probably could have made it without it but I love the one I ended up with, girl strap and all. :))

Hey, if you need the shoulder strap there's nothing wrong with practicality!

I was referring to the beach-tote type bags like the Thomas Browne pictured above!

Bond shoulders his bag, closes the compact he's holding and turns before shutting the door behind him:

"Just going to pop out for a quick latte... M? Penny? Either of care you for anything?"

Kitt, which did you end up going with? Filson makes a nice one of these as well, but It's $795.00.

It has the brass latch and a detatchable shoulder strap:

    http://www.filson.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2092389&cp=2065674.2065687.4049282&parentPage=family

If I ever get another from Custom Hide, I might see what they can without the latch - maybe something even simpler...

P.S. For a couple of recent sunny days my OP Victory's came out of winter hibernation! Now we're back to the cold and rain! Enough already! :v

Oh, I know. Just hassling you.

I actually have the RRL pictured in my post above. Those two pics are of the same bag, just with and without flash. Great bag, very thick leather and solid brass hardware. Love it.

Here in GA my OP's never get a rest. I just picked up a new pair of victorys(they rereleased the 55 for a limited run) in silver with rosewood a couple of weeks ago by the way. Just a little change up.

Yes, Mark Cross. I purchased a wallet from them in the early 90's. It was black on the outside with red on the inside and evocative of the Swaine & Adeney attache case, which is why I bought it. I still have it but I beat the hell out of it in all my travels. In the novel LALD, Bond is fitted out with American clothing and kit while in New York by the FBI. One of those items is a crocodile Mark Cross bill fold. It's too bad Mark Cross is no more, they had great stuff.

The problem with Jack Spade, Mark Cross and Filson, another great brand with tons of history, is that they are American. It could be argued that since the new Bond is fitted out in Tom Ford, American brands are O.K. However, in most things Bond buys British.

Sorry to start up an older post. But is it confirmed that the messenger type bag Bond has in that final scene is a Sony Vaio bag? I can't seem to find anything similar online. I've been looking for a strong messenger bag for my more active days.

Good options. I'll take a look at your site for other stuff.

I was hoping someone had one of the bags from the film if it was a standard Vaio bag. I didn't see it in The Mantis' collection. Part of me wants it to be a Dunhill bag...I know it would cost more but it would have that timeless Bond feel.
