Daily Carry of a Walther P99.....

I have a concealed carry permit and usually "carry" daily....I don't wear a suit everyday so something small and light is usually the best option for me. I choose a S&W 442 because it is light and easily concealed under a light shirt and with slacks, blue jeans or shorts.

I was watching Casino Royale for the 20th time and was impressed with Bond doing all that running and jumping in the free-running sequence. I thought, okay, lets try the P99 for a few days with the Vega holster and see how it feels....

Well I was not impressed....for me, the piece was too heavy, too thick, easily "printable" under clothing and I was always checking the piece to be sure it didn't seat loose in the open-top Vega holster.

Oh well, I guess I'm just not "00" material! I'll try my PPK with a Ken Nulls shoulder holster and see how that does next.

PS: I'm still keeping the P99! LoL

Can I ask why you need to carry a firearm? As a member in the UK we are not allowed to own most let alone carry firearms in public so what you talk about above feels a world away from me. Only the police and SOCA here in Uk are allowed to carry firearms in public - concealed or otherwise.

“I have a slight inferiority complex.” - James Bond

There is such a wide view(s) on firearms between the UK and the USA....I do not wish to be drawn in the "gun fight" between our British and American cousins....just read this Board on topics dealing with firearms and you will see what I am talking about.

In America, firearms (pistols, rifle, shotguns) are legal and States have seen to issue concealed carry permits to those that meet the requirements.

I do not wish to debate the difference between the firearms laws in the UK or US either. To do so would be outside the scope of this forum.

I just wondered why you carry one conceled? Is there a genuine need or are you just trying to be like Bond?

No, I do NOT carry a firearm to be like Bond.....I also do not own my nice set of golf clubs so I can be like Tiger Woods.

I do not have a "genuine need" in that I am not a pharmacist that carry drugs; I am not a law enforcement officer, nor am I a jewler that carries diamonds. * I am an American citizen that has gone through several firearm certification courses (and background checks) that is excersing my right to carry a firearm legally on my person; I shoot bi-weekly at an indoor firearms range; I have attended several shooting schools (Gunsite and Thunder Ranch); I have an FFL and a Class III (Google these)...Fact: If you take away people's right to carry a firearm then the criminals will be the only ones carrying a gun!

the p99 is actually a cery nice carry weapon. Compared to larger pistols like glock and a few others, for a full size weapon it isnt that bad. Ill be getting my CCW when i move back home...i also have a P99

Yes, that's why they're called criminals... The times of the wild west have long gone, but still Americans find it normal to carry a gun without the need to. Keeping one or more in the house for home defense, I fully understand and support. To take a gun onto the streets; well... 8-)

well, if i could carry, i wouldn't. (uk guy ya see) fortunately for me, my area isn't as bad as the big cities. and i've been shooting for 12 years. its just my choice.

besides guys, if you're in the uk, what right have you to tell someone in another country what to do? if its legal for them to do so and they want to, i say just let them get on with it.

You know...that sentance there could apply to a lot of countries and their foreign policy.

And with that reply I think I've just started the countdown to this thread being closed.

Carrying a weapon just because someone else may do so...?... It's not a brilliant defence to an arguement is it ? And I think I'm correct in saying that Tiger Woods has only had his car smashed with his golf clubs..?..the end result tends to be a little different with a gun.

I hate the subject of guns...my best friend was murdered when a guy put a gun to his head and pulled the trigger...he was 26 and just trying to earn a living.

I certainly wouldn't trust my life to a Vega holster. The design and suppleness of the material used, plus the clip, allow it to change position too much for consistant draw. Much better off with the Null UNS for it.

As for civvies carrying guns, I can see both sides of the argument. And if someone applies and gets a CCW permit, then it is a huge reponsibility you have, and you should carry 95%+ of the time, otherwise you are not being responsible. Te fact is, CCW holders save lives every year. I think this sums it up well if you are looking at CCW or wish to understand those that do....

tbh, the whole gun debate gets easily out of control.

here in the uk, handguns were banned back in '96 imo, as a political vote winner. did it save lives? not imo.

it all boils down to the powers that be targetting the wrong people. banning something thats legal doesn't stop the illegal fraternaties from carrying on. ban drugs, people still smuggle them in and take them, ban alcohol, people will distill their own, bring in speed limits and people will still floor it. same with guns, ban handguns, and people will still use them to commit crime.

now on the right to carry one. i've never had the need to carry any form of firearm in public. not only is it dangerous (can you imagine a ND in a supermarket?) but its also a bit irrisponsible. for instance, can you imagine if you pull a gun at someone, theres a fight, and they use your own gun to shoot you?

if i had the right to carry a pistol, i wouldn't. the main reason being that i don't go anywhere that warrents it. if i lived in baghdad however, i'd be tooled to the nines. :))

now if anyone in the states wants to carry a gun, and they go about it in a legal manner, then who am i to say its wrong for them to do so? much like saying its wrong for a muslim woman to have to wear a burkka, it their country and their laws and choice.

i'd just recommend that whatever you yanks carry, just keep it uncocked and the safety on, don't wanna turn the crown jewels to strawberry jam now do ya?

The point here is if you carry a firearm (providing it is legal within your country ofresidence) for personal protection due to the fear of gun-touting criminals in your locality is one thing but to carry one simply to feed your Bond fantasy is downright dangerous. Wearing the latest TF coat or an Omega watch because your Bond hero has one is fine but to carry a weapon that can kill should not be treated so lightly. I do not want to discuss the difference in the laws between say the US and the UK - that is not a debate for this forum. But to encourge those who do not routinely carry firearms to do so just because they want to be like Bond would be a tragedy!

While I am sure our member bondfan is both responible and trained to do so others reading this will not be. Whatever your stance on owning and carrying a firearm in any country this point should surely not be ignored!

I just hate that the initial post has turned into a political one..... This is my fault and I will post again with a bit of caution and careful wording.

I do not see how everytime someone posts something about a firearm it turns into something like this....I did a search on the Board and found that 9 times out of 10 when a Member posts something about a firearm, someone gets "political" and "anti gun" in the thread.

We must realize that Britiain and America are really extreme opposites when it comes to firearm ownership. I am sure both sides can come up with very strong stats on both sides of the fence.

Lets just leave it at this: Americans have a strong relationship with firearms that dates back to the founding of the Country. Americans strongly defend their rights to firearm ownership and believe that they have every right to do as they please, so long as it does not hurt others in the course of that right (still speaking still of firearm ownership). The individual States have spoken and at the Federal level they have concurred that individuals do have the right to carry on their person....with proper training and back-ground checks. It is legal in this country (in most States) to carry a firearm on your person to defend yourself, your family and your property.

Again, I have really enjoyed this Board but will post a bit more carefully and do a bit of side-stepping when it comes to firearms. I guess its a bit "safer" to post about Dupont cufflinks, Persol sunglasses and John Lobb shoes! LoL

I think part of the problem is that this forum has an international membeship - which in itself is a very good thing - but due to that there will be some significant cultural and legal differences on certain issues. Owning and carrying a firearm is one and has been highlighted here. To that there is not always a right or wrong answer ... I would just suggest to anyone thinking of owning a firearm to do it for the right reasons and be both legal and responisble if you must have one.

Now lets get back to all things BOND! :D

I'm a little sorry to join this thread so late and thus missed the early exchange of views on the carrying of weapons..... it's a loaded topic that can get heated very quickly. I think everyone here should be commended for their restraint - given what we have had in the past - it's a pretty mature crowd!!!

I do have to make one point to Sir Miles, I can appreciate how you feel having lost a friend. I have been involved in law enforcement most of my adult life, and have lost two friends to shootings, another was beaten to death with his flashlight. I don't blame the tools used in these crimes - but those who wield them..... lecture over!

Now to Bondfan's expierment, I too have a P99 and the Vega rig. I agree that the combo is pretty unwieldy, the Vega style holster as ASP pointed out is a horrible design and with any physical effort your pistol will tumble right out of your waistband!

But Bond has always been holster challenged, the literary Bond first used a terrible chamois rig, rejected the fast and secure Berns Martin holster and ended up with a Vega - like, "stitched pigskin" holster. SC's early holster was designed like a pair of boxer shorts!

Only Brosnan and Dalton had "real" usable gunleather, and while DC upped the ante with his competent gun handling skills - holsters have taken a dive under his tenure. It's great though to see a "traditional" Bond with a PPK. Personally I find one of the best things about Bond is his sometimes improbable use of firearms.

I know Bondfan wasn't really trying to be oo7, since he didn't glue his P99 into the holster like they did for DC. I would like to suggest that next week you try the "padded envelope carry" .... I know you'll find that more comfortable and concealable!!!!

    ;)

Any loss of life is sad - however it comes about...and I agree with you that it's the people that wield these 'tools' that are the ones to blame....

And if it's legal to carry weapons where you live...I respect that....it's just not for me.

A very good friend of mine is a firearms instructor with Greater Manchester Police Force...he always told me he felt safer when carrying firearms because the criminals KNEW he (and his team) would be armed and would, therefore, probably think twice before firing on them. I understand his point.

And bondfan...it's my fault this thread 'went political' - for that I'm sorry.
