I think real life Bond villans exist. By that I'm refering to violent, powefull and very coulorfull individuals. Here are two examples:

Muammar al-Gaddafi
http://img.allposters.com/6/LRG/27/2723/4XIND00Z.jpg

Dictator of Libya since 1969 when he led a coup at age 27. Is behind many terrorst acts, including the Locerbie bombing. Lives in a large, luxerious tent. He even uses the tent when he is on foreign visits - even in Moscow. Dresses very coulorfully. Only young, beautiful women are allowed to serve in his bodyguard.

Otto "Scarface" Skorzeny (1908-1975)
http://www.ww2shots.com/gallery/d/3900-2/Obersturmbannf_hrer+Otto+Skorzeny-color+photo-ww2shots-people.jpg

"Hitler's favourite commando"/"The most dangerous man in Europe".
Got his famous scar while fencing at the "duelling society" at university. Joined the Austrian nazi party in 1930. By 1939 he owned a construction company and had a pilot license.
When the war started he volentered for the Luftwaffe but was too tall (6' 4'') and too old (31 years old). ) Tranfered to the elite Waffen-SS Leibstandarte division and later the Das Reich division as a tecnical officer at the eastern front. In Yugoslavia he managed to arrest som officers who wanted to overthrow the Hitler-friendly King. After getting injured in Russia he planned a new type of unit in Waffen-SS. He started and led commando units with changing names for the rest of the war. He led operations like the freeing Mussolini from Monte Sazzo, the attempted capture of Marchall Tito at his secret HQ, the kidnapping of Miklos Horthy (the Hungarian regent), planned a unit of suicide bombers, sent undecover commandoes to wreck havoc during the battle of the Bulge and training the "Wherewolves"; a unit of terrorist/guerillas to stay behind and fight in allied occupied Germany. He also hid a large Nazi treassure in caves in the Alps and elsewhere. If only he had been on our side ... :#
He was captured by the western powers after the war and was put on trial for ordering his men to use allied uniforms, but at the last day of the trial an SAS officer testified they had used the same tactics and Skorzeny was acquitted.
He was held in a prison camp while he secretly helped prominent nazis to escape. The soviets contacted him and wanted him to work fro them. He refused. Shortly after, he escaped and fled to facist Spain. There he started in the arms trade and led ODESSA - an organisation to help nazis escape, often to Latin America. With Martin Borman, Hitler's right hand man, he had stolen $800 million in bank deposits, 2500 kilograms of gold, 90 kilograms of platinum, and 4600 carats of diamonds and other precious stones from the German Reishbank. The treassure was sent to Argentina and came under the control of President Peron. Skorzeny became the lover of Evita Peron and trained the Argentinian police in torture. When the Peron government fell he helped Juan Peron escape to Spain and recieved the Borman treassure for the help. Skorzeny funnled the money into ODESSA. He also helped Mengele and General Oskar Dirlewanger, the "Butcher of Warsaw," and Adolf Eichmann, the man who engineered the Final Solution. He also trained the Egyptians and PLO members (incluiding Arrafat) in commando tactics (ehm ... blowing up stuff).
He never denounsed Hitler and remained a nazi until his death from cancer in 1975. Believe it or not, Otto Skorzeny was a real person and I only mention the "highlights". 8-)

Do you know of any real life Bond villans ?

    I read many years ago that Fleming based his villains on people like Howard Hughes and Aristotle Onassis - mega-rich, owners of yachts, private islands etc.
    I must be dreaming

    Interesting, could you give us a source for that, Sherbrook? I've not heard of that before. :)

    I don't think Bond ever went up against dictators or politicians. Some state organisations like Smersh, yes, but never someone like Stalin himself.

    I suppose in the films, there are the dictators Dr. Kananga, Prime Minister of San Monique in Live and Let Die and General Medrano of Bolivia in Quantum of Solace. None in the books, however.

    That is true, I forgot about Madrano, but I thought that Bond was after Quantum/Green in QOS and Madrano is more of a side-villain. And correct me if I'm wrong but I thought Kanaga was just an ambassador or maybe (foreign)minister of St. Monice.

    Yes, Medrano is incidental, but obviously a minor vllain James Bond comes up against along with Greene's regime change plot.

    Dr. Kananga is the Prime Minister of San Monique - see the M briefing in James Bond's flat near the start of the film. He's also present at the United Nations conference. It's implied he's a dictator in the mould of Idi Amin of Uganda - who, very intrerestingly, Yaphet Kotto later played on the big screen in Operaton Entebbe (1978). Kananga is always seen in palatial houses befitting a Prime Mnister/Head of State and is always dressed as immaculately as James Bobnd himself - I often refer to him as the first black James Bond, in fact. Having said all that, Harold Strutter does refer to Dr Kananga as a "two-bit island diplomat". Strange. :s

    P.S. I'm writing an in-depth review of LALD at the moment, hence the depth of my reply here. I think that it's a really fascinating and criminally overlooked James Bond film. -{

    Though in some ways Dick Cheney = General Brutus Brute Clay, the villain of John Gardner's Cold/Cold Fall (1996), so we're not far wrong here, then. Cheney being the Republican 'hawk' right-wing Vice President of the United States 2001-2009.

    I'd have thought that he was nearer to Raoul Silva with the computer hacking, spreading of Top Secret information etc. No? Without Wikileaks, the cultural references in Skyfall would not have registered so much IMHO.

    Robert Maxwell, the media tycoon, was widely discredited as a crook, and is a pretty obvious model for Elliot Carver in TND... Even down to Carver's death which mirrored ( no pun not ended) Maxwell's:

    The thing is, real life villains are better drawn than Bond villains, they get to you more. I mean, look at Mugabe. You know what he's like, okay he's a stereotype, but he's the real deal. I'm talking about his persona and personality; he doesn't have to be famous.

    And of course Julian Assange, not an out and out villain, but a character. Could be dull, like Greene in QoS, but he isn't. The white hair, the creepy air, the sense of narcissism. You get the picture.

    I do think a new Bond film could have a situation where there isn't a real big villain to start with, but circumstances conspire to kick off thanks to misunderstandings. It begins with an Assange guy, or provokes a situation unwittingly, then the military men get involved. As much c0ck-up and conspiracy, though evil men are part of it.

    Zorin = Breivik

    -both used false fronts (oil pumping and geo farm) to cover their evil deeds
    -both sadistic

    "According to the report, Breivik displayed inappropriate and blunted affect and a severe lack of empathy. He spoke incoherently in neologisms and had acted compulsively based on a universe of bizarre, grandiose and delusional thoughts. Breivik alluded to himself as the future regent of Norway, master of life and death, while calling himself "inordinately loving" and "Europe's most perfect knight since WWII". He was convinced that he was a warrior in a "low intensity civil war" and had been chosen to save his people. Breivik described plans to carry out further "executions of categories A, B and C traitors" by the thousands, the psychiatrists included, and to organize Norwegians in reservations for the purpose of selective breeding. Breivik believed himself to be the "knight Justiciar grand master" of a Templar organisation"

    Selective breeding = Drax

    Although Robert Maxwell is the obvious one for Elliot Carver, I see current media baron Rupert Murdoch as a better comparison, especially if you look at his appearance in the 1970s, compared to Jonathan Pryce's appearance in the film.
    I have a soft spot for TND, it was released while I was half way though my time at college studying media, so the type of baddie and his media obsessions resonates with me.

    Mind you, it resonates now with the blatant over-Tory biased bilge that the BBC and papers are spewing at the moment. too!
