Although Robert Maxwell is the obvious one for Elliot Carver, I see current media baron Rupert Murdoch as a better comparison, especially if you look at his appearance in the 1970s, compared to Jonathan Pryce's appearance in the film.
I have a soft spot for TND, it was released while I was half way though my time at college studying media, so the type of baddie and his media obsessions resonates with me.

Mind you, it resonates now with the blatant over-Tory biased bilge that the BBC and papers are spewing at the moment. too!

Well it must be the first time that the BBC has ever had a Tory bias! :o

Don't believe a word of it!
:)) I was thinking the same thing. I hope the BBC get taken to task over supplying hard line lefties for every political debate audience.
It was either that.....or the priesthood

Here a few off the top of my head. To keep things simple, I skipped heads of state and villains who are already dead.

Peter Thiel: Anti-women’s suffrage, anti-democracy hi-tech plutocrat. Created troubling mass-surveillance-software technology. Currently trying to build floating cities to house his vision of a new society. Hopes to prolong his life with infusions of fresh blood from young people. Working on developing potentially humanity-destroying AI.

Erik Prince: Millionaire, professional mercenary, founder of the notorious Blackwater. Linked with massacres of civilians in the past, currently works with some very bad people in Africa and elsewhere.

Luis Posada Carriles: CIA-backed terrorist linked to a campaign of bombings in Cuba in 1997, the bombing of Cubana Flight 455 in 1976, as well as attempts to overthrow the Guatemalan government in 1965. Also suspected of drug trafficking and plotting to assassinate Henry Kissinger. Currently enjoying retirement in Miami.

Another person who defiantly belongs on this list is Pablo Escobar, the inspiration for Franz Sanchez in Licence To Kill.

His cartel was estimated to have supplied 80% of the Cocaine smuggled into the United States at the height of his career, this earned him over $ 21.9 billion in personal income. After becoming wealthy, Escobar created or bought numerous residences and safe houses, with the Hacienda Nápoles gaining significant notoriety. The luxury house contained a colonial house, a sculpture park, and a complete zoo with animals from various continents, including elephants, exotic birds, giraffes, and hippopotamuses.Escobar also owned a home in the US under his own name: a 6500 square foot, pink, waterfront mansion situated at 5860 North Bay Road in Miami Beach, Florida. The four-bedroom estate, built in 1948 on Biscayne Bay, was seized by the government in the 1980s. Escobar also owned a massive Caribbean getaway on Isla Grande, the largest of the cluster of the 27 coral cluster islands comprising Islas del Rosario, located approximately 22 miles from Cartagena. The compound, now half-demolished and overtaken by vegetation and wild animals, featured a mansion, apartments, courtyards, a large swimming pool, a helicopter landing pad, reinforced windows, tiled floors, and a large, unfinished building to the side of the mansion.

In addition to his wealth, he was known to bribe judges and other government officials as well as murder law enforcement personnel who attempted to interfere with his cartel. In fact the phrase plata o plomo (Latin for sliver or lead) was coined by him, and mentioned by Felix Leiter in the film.

That will be one of the first places to go. It probably won't go under during his lifetime, but he doesn't care about whether or not his children will have it. There's a true villain. He doesn't even care about his children.

Trump contemptuously quoting London's Mayor out of context, denouncing him as "pathetic" for rising above the smear, arguing that 'mainstream media' is covering for Sadiq Khan and implying (let's face it) that the fact Sadiq's a Muslim is somehow an issue.

All that makes Trump more sleazy than Elliot Carver.
Critics and material I don't need. I haven't changed my act in 53 years.

George Soros. Billionaire giving money to organizations causing chaos, which he then profits from. If there was ever a real-life Bond villian, it would be him. In a lot of ways it seems to echo the new take on Blofeld.

Living in the US, and not being as familar with Maxwell, I always assumed that Carver was based on Murdoch.

What "organizations causing chaos" are you referring to? To the best of my knowledge, most of the organizations Soros funds support democracy, freedom of information, and drug policy reform.

    Putin could easily fit.

But I think we could look at more subtle forms, too. Anyone who is power hungry and hopes to control people for his or her benefit has the essentials of a Bond villain, even though we might consider them "captains of industry." Today's despot is less likely to be some political leader and more likely to be a corporate CEO who hopes to dominate a marketplace at the expense of customers and national borders, monopolizing business, destroying competition, and skirting or perverting laws.

From what I gather Elton John was an only child. As for not attending his father's funeral that surely is his choice. I think they had a very strained relationship at best and it really is his call.

Agreed, I don't know much about Sir Elton, apart from his talent. -{ but many families have
long lasting arguments and vendettas. So without knowing the full facts it would be wrong to
blame one person. ( Just my opinion ) In my own life, I have two older Brothers who I have
not spoken to in years, or rather they have cut off contact with me. They have never come to
see my children, etc. So I will attend their funerals but I won't be going to any meal etc afterwards
as that would be hypocrisy, and I don't count myself as a villain, ………… ………………...
...…. although I'd love to be a Bond villain. ;)

Oskar Dirlewanger: Child molester, psycopath and leader of one of the worst Waffen-SS units in WWII, a penal unit. This was a truely despicable human being.
