Are these the same jackets? On my screen he is wearing a deep Navy jacket and when the shots change the jacket appears to be black.

My guess would be either the lighting changed, or something in the film's color process was different for those shots, which made the jacket look darker. I'm not sure, but I think that movie may have used the technicolor process, which definitely could cause odd effects like that.
